Nominations for worst manager at Novartis

Tampa, it's a boy / girl team there. Can't call them men / woman because they act like kids. The girl runs around w/ a little book taking notes from start to finish and acts robotic, she's a real joy. She pretends "hugs" you when she sees you..very uncomfortable. And then there is little' Marco who believes he's Brad Pit in the Oceans series, seriously he told us that during a meeting. This dude, has wrecked his company car, get's lost trying to find Md offices, feel off a cliff and ended up in the hospital, got sued by a rep, got called out by the regional for using unapproved apps and thinks his only job is to bash reps w/ coaching. Dude is still here too..just goes to show you how low the NVS bar is.

Some one tell me how Vince became a director. Is this tool for real ? Come on, who does he have naked pictures of???? What a waste of space..... oh, and is it true he had a rep of his take his piss test in DC because he failed the first one???

He became a director because this is Novartis. He is not intelligent but has the traits we all hate about the pharma industry. At a respected company ,with integrity, he would not have been hired. As we all know all you need to do kiss butt, compliment the woman, and tell the men you like their suit or watch. If you do this over a 2 week period you become a director. We all know it's time to leave this company.

The companies like "weak" people actually the whole industry likes weak people ABLS and Reps alike. If your weak you will never go against the tide, stand up for what's right. Basically you just keep your mouth shut and be a robot. ABLs are weak, they can't do the right thing ever they do what's good for them and their insecurities. They will masquerade as doing it for the company but literally it's for their own personal ego boost, weak. You will never find a Strong ABL/REp around because they speak their mind, won't put up w/ bullshit and are when the ABL acts like a child they stand up for themselves. These strong reps are usually ran out of town because they stand their ground and the ABL can't stand it. Weak Sheep get rewarded.

The Industry is a "starter" job anymore. It's good for recent college grades and the mommy club. The initial training is hard but good, it would give a recent college grad a good foundation. The managers received below average advice and manage by fear, intimidation or ego. I think Grocery store managers are better prepared to deal w/ people problems because the Pharma Manager is not. If you like to be talked down to, if you like to be treated as a child the industry is good. Finally, it's not sales, that's what's at the heart of the problem, middle management running around pressuring and talking like it's sales when access in most of the Urban setting is extremely limited and requires lunch only presentations and that is if the MD even comes into the lunch room. Everyday is a crap shoot wondering how many times you will have to lie about your calls. Many people have said it here many times, it's a customer service job but unfortunately the experience you receive is ONLY good to another Pharma company and even then these jobs are scaled up and scaled down every 3-5 years so there is no security. Look at PSL's, many were hired 9 months ago only to be let go recently. A 9 month Job?!! Seriously some of these people left other jobs because they were offered good money now they are left holding the bag. It's a sorry industry people and anyone that wants to have adult conversations w/ other adults do not apply because you will not be having two way communication w/ anyone in this industry. It's all kids play, lying and double talk. My Manager used to thank me for being transparent, I was talking to him and telling him what will work in my territory since I've been in it for years. He didn't know what the word transparent meant, although he would acknowledge it. He would push for something that was totally unrealistic and of course it would blow up in his face then he would over coach to compensate for his failure to LISTEN to BOOTs on the GROUND. It became so silly and worthless I just resigned. It became like talking to a wall. If this is the way you want to live your life..Pharma is for you but personally if you double talk most people in the world they will place you in the loser category.

Great Post. Besides the recent college grads and Mommy club it is also good for those of us with a side gig. I love the 6 figure income while I build my side gig. Working 15 hours a week is not a bad perk. If I wanted to remain in a corporate environment until I retire being a rep is not worth it and Novartis is definitely not the company.

How about the manager having threating conversations with reps, and sending similar texts and emails to her team? Example: 'I am sick and tired of seeing your names on lists...Moving forward you all will be getting 1's on your field coaching reports'. And you know what that means.. 1's on year end and no raises.
I'm fairly certain that she missed the compliance module on retaliation and threats etc..someone needs to go to HR and she should be fired.

I was sweating bullets when the last alignment occured thinking I may get Daniela (California). But thankfully I didn't. She's a hot mess. Completely blames everyone for issues she caused. Never know what mood he'll be in. Breaks most compeny policies including making negative remarks about people that seem discriminatory. I know many people have complained about her to others but not sure HR ever got involved. I have no idea who thought she'd be a good manager.

I love when people say this isn't a sales job. Maybe for you that is the case. Everything is a sales job in my eyes. All the time in life you are trying to get people to do what you want- that is sales. Pelosi is trying to "sell" the American people that we don't need a wall. I'm trying to sell physicians that they need to treat HF with Entresto and that it is worth the price. Customer service is part of any sales job in any industry- would you purchase something if you didn't have good service? Maybe but it depends on what you are buying and the buying factors.

If you can't see your Dr.'s then that is your issue. Give them a reason to see you- some won't see you ever no matter what. That is true in any sales job in any industry. Focus on the 20% that make up the majority of your volume and find a way to win.

As far as layoffs- yes we have them. And honestly we probably need more. The reach and frequency model of 1990's is so outdated but yet the staffing of us is still based upon it. Reps should have huge territory based upon who can be seen and serviced. We aren't there as an industry yet. Most of what you guys call "real" sales jobs encompass territories that are multiple states. No other industry of "real" sales is paying reps 6 figures to call on a few metro areas. I challenge anyone that is reading this to name one. And don't say real estate because that is even less of a "sales" job then pharma- it won't be long and the real estate agents will be replaced by Redfin, Trulia, etc. When was the last time anyone bought a house and was "sold" by the agent- doesn't happen.

Lastly PSL job. Complete waste of a job. Don't need it same with FRM. Specialty pharmacies all offer the same services and do a better job at it- and doesn't cost Novartis a dime. No patient needs the HUB services. Especially true for entresto, but also true in Rheumatology, MS and oncology. Patients need access to HUB services only if they are uninsured or really poor. And those service are all easily initiated by the SP. For drugs that aren't handled by SP's you might be able to make a case for a small PSL / FRM salesforce since the local walgreens isn't going out of the way to help a patient get access. SP's all go way above and beyond because that is how they get paid.

Totally agree with this post. The "dude" in Tampa has NO clue how to manage, how to motivate, how to even run a district. He's the most de-motivating manager I've ever heard of. He was overheard on a conference call telling the Novartis reps that they needed to "take control" of the PDI reps, to "teach" them selling skills, to be their leaders. All of this because, according to this asinine DM, the PDI reps have "no selling skills whatsoever". This conference came within his first month of becoming a DM. MT, did you think this wouldn't get back to the (in your estimation) "buffoons", the PDI reps??

Let me guess, He probably stands there like a stooge on a sales call too not even caring about helping sell Entresto because he is to busy trying to find every little nuance. This type of manager is the nuance. Uncomfortable conversations during the pre-call conversation because they refuse to listen to you. Uncomfortable after the call because they find some little nuance to critique which was much about nothing.

Insert "Eye Rolls" all day long working w/ people like this.
