What's all this handbagging about? The WHO report may be flawed. The fact that the U.S. spends so much on healthcare skews the data unfavorably. Even accounting for that, it is still pretty bad. It is notoriously difficult to compare and rank national healthcare systems. The WHO report does however illustrate major concerns. The fact remains that the U.S. is lagging its peers in some major barometers of public health. For instance, the U.S. slipped from 18th to 24th in male life expectancy from 2000 to 2009, according to the United Nations, and from 28th to 35th in female life expectancy. Its rankings in preventing male and female under-5 mortality also fell. Something needs to be done about that, irrespective of your political persuasion.

If someone dies instantly in a freak car accident, is that any reflection on a country's healthcare system? If someone refuses to exercise, then drinks and smokes their life away... is that a reflection of the quality of a healthcare system? If you are morbidly obese and refuse to lose weight and die young... is that a reflection of the quality of a healthcare system? These are a few of the things that the UN or WHO or whatever do not even try to examine. They have an agenda and if information contradicts that agenda, they ignore it. You will NEVER convince me that Costa Rica has a better Healthcare System than the U.S. It is absolutley ludicrous. I guess Costa Ricans don't typically die instantly in car crashes.
