What is Eli Lilly company culture like?

Lilly is a very peaceful and happy place where senior management acts as shepherds watching over their flocks, ensuring that the sheep are well fed and safe. Lower level management then tends the flocks, ensuring they develop to their full potential. The flock feels secure and happily trusts its overseers. As a result, innovation thrives and Lilly's future is sound and secure.

You are so absolutely right. I have friends at the Lilly Clinic, Greenfield, and Tippecanoe who would all agree that at Lilly, a promise made is a promise kept. "We do not hire you for a job, we hire you for an entire career." And if you believe that, I also have some oceanfront real estate in Kentucky to sell you.

That oceanfront real estate in Kentucky would have been a better buy than IMCLONE.

Lilly's culture: fear keeps anyone from making a decision, people are so risk adverse that nothing get done, their vendors HATE working for them, a 3 week project that should involve 5 people becomes a 2 year project involving Six Sigma and 100 people.

It's a joke. That's why Lilly is in the shape that it is and why the good people are leaving in mass.

The people who are quivering in the corner at Lilly need to understand something. It is actually more dangerous to stand pat at Lilly than move on. The cuts are going to be deep and wide in a couple years...so a better plan is to move on whenever possible. Global corps like Lilly may even move offshore to avoid paying the incredibly high taxxes it will take to pay for Obbammaaacare. They can always move to Asssia, pay sllave wages...no penssion...no healthyycare...no 401kk. More money for execs. It's really an easy decision.

depends on your manager & how accountable you are for your results. If your manager is an idiot, you can produce and still get the shaft. If you can't produce and don't want to get better it won't be fun. You will join the growing list of people that complain about everything... If you have a great manager, it is one of the best companies out there. Hopefully the new CEO can fix some of the issues around ineffective management on all levels. Example: the Texas Neuroscience Area has turned over the entire management team TWICE with the exception of 2 in the last 4 years. Can upper management not smell there could be a problem??????? No one will say anything due to fear of what might happen. ie. the message is "protect yourself" when opening your mouth.

CORRUPT!!!!!
HR has allowed to totally become a scared disorganization. Upper management does not like contributions or differing opinions. In addition, they like to take the credit but blame everyone else for the failures. Case in point, Senior management was very happy as the sales of Zyprexa grew and everyone took credit for it. Look what happened when the off-label promotion issue happened. Most of the e-mails that got us in trouble were from Senior management (i.e. the CEO stating in an e-mail that ZYP got its butt kicked in the peds office?).

Anyway, I think Lilly is a very confused company and what they need is fresh blood on top. Unfortunately, most talented youngsters have flown the nest and are successful elsewhere.

I didn't get fired, I was recruited by another company and chose to quit drinking the kool aid and join a company where I could actually work and make a difference.

Lilly = Answers that Flatter.

There are different cultures at Lilly, depending on who you are.
If you are a young white guy, just consider yourself lucky to be hired, then shut up. If you are a person of color and newly hired, no matter what you do, you will have promotional opportunities.... I know, because I am in that group. If you are a woman, you will get these opportunities more quickly after you sleep with a guy who is at a higher pay grade level... sooner or later, every female sales rep does.
Best advice: Get your MBA, and find another company.
Good luck.

That's bull. Just because you're a person of color does NOT mean you have it easy at this company! I cannot WAIT to take the severance and get the hell out of here. It's especially difficult when you come on this forum and read posts like this and realize that no matter how well you do or try, your position on that team will always be minimized to "they're here because of affirmative action." Especially when 90% of the customers we deal look like and relate better to YOU. They completely minimize our intelligence and always want to make a ridiculous ass comment about "your President Obama." Well he IS the PRESIDENT! Get OVER it! There is a LOT wrong with Lilly, but your not getting a promotion should not be blamed on the person of Color on your team. Especially when you all laugh and smile in our faces, trying to act "down." Get the fuq outta here!

Hard core sales, focused around the patient. We have one of the best sales organizations in the industry. Very tough to get hired, but if you make it in the door you will be rewarded. Respect for people is one of our mission statements and Lilly lives it.

John,
please dont post anything here....go sell some shares and enjoy the millions while you can

While I don't care for large companies and their bureacracies and inefficiencies, if I were a minority I would think twice before leaving the mother ship. I am in my 40's and have worked for numerous companies as both a consultant and employee. Lilly is far and away the best company I have worked at for minorities. I would repeat that 10 times or so, but it would get annoying and you probably wouldn't believe it anyway.

As for my experience, I have worked with numerous blacks whose careers are skyrocketing there. While they have hired the most talented blacks I have ever worked with...they are also the most proactive when it comes to affirmative action. Sadly, their zeal with seeking minority candidates has resulted in hiring a few bad apples who want to sue for discrimination which is incredibly ironic. Like biting the hand that feeds you ironic.

But seriously, if you are a minority and cannot climb the Lilly ladder sufficiently for your taste...and expect something better elsewhere, you definitely need a reality check. Perhaps leaving the company and getting that reality check might give you some perspective. Go ahead and, as you say, get the fuq outta there!

Most of my Dr.'s are white males. The colored Dr.'s are few and far between. You could make a case for Indian Dr.'s but they are still the minority to the white males. Its just how it is. But you don't deserve a cookie because its harder for you to relate to a white Dr. Maybe you are in the wrong business- maybe you sell something to more of the colored folk? I'm not sure what industry though. Maybe sales is a white males game? I mean lets face it, white males are pretty much the decision makers at every company in every industry. Sad but true. Hopefully Obama will fix it!

Ever seen the Stepford Wives??? Take that and magnify by 1000 = Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, MALFUNCTION! MALFUNCTION, Ctrl Alt Del, Restart... ITS GREAT HERE. YOUR A LEADER, I can SEE it. If you can dream it, you CAN DO IT! Lilly, Lilly, Lilly, CTRL ALT DEL...Now my ass has to be re-furbished. No culture here. A throat culture is more pleasurable.

This is sad, but ALMOST VERY TRUE...Now a days when they take that cute lil pick of you at corporate, the one that goes on the badge that says you are licenced to carry Lilly drugs...Well cut one in half. It's chipped, but only do so if you're not w the company anymore. A signal gives off to "the mothership" when tampered, but if you cut it open, PLAIN AS DAY!!! If you have been carryong that card on you, god bless, cause they know when you bought KY Jelly to satisfy your bitch. It's not a corporate gig. We supply the cards on an outsourced basis. For you, Astra, SYSCO Foods, PAYCHEX, ADP and Cintas. Just a heads up. They've been doin it for almost 2 years and is applicable in court. From the manufacturer...LEAVE THE CARD AT HOME!!! Don't say I didn't warn you
