To all unemployed Shire Reps !!!!!

There is no job or career that is perfect for sure. You will never find the panacea of jobs, but pharma is ultimately a dead end career if you just stay a rep. There is not much value delivered and this is difficult to admit. Pharma is a great career for people who don't want to excel. I don't want to look back and regret that I didn't at least try something else. Maybe this is my 2014 New Years Resolution!
Cheers.

Pharma Sales - PROS -vs- CONS

Pros:
1. Good benefits - Car, pay, insurance, 401K, etc… (**Golden Handcuffs)
2. Good product in ADHD
3. Freedom (Family Time)
4. No customer calls after hours (Could be a negative because it shows that we are not valued)

Cons:
1. Lack of stability (Layoffs 2012)
2. ZERO respect
3. Customer access is down and will continue to go down
4. Long unfulfilling days with lots of driving and being alone
5. Unrealistic goals and expectations
6. Hours of busy work, useless trackers, wasteful programs, compliance tests
7. No advancement
8. Manager ride alongs
*9. No transferable skills

What am I missing?

glad I did not get laid off last December. Every Shire rep I know that got cut are still on the streets, desperate for any job!

Completely false. In touch with at least 6 who were laid off...all in better situations. They have been an inspiration and have shown me that there are better opportunities. Happy New Year!

This statement has to be a joke to get people riled up. Do you really think the people who were left in ADHD sales are in a good place? I know 3 who were let go last year that are doing quite well in their new careers.

Sure.....as a 55k / year base contract sales rep.

I know a handful that have been selected for great opportunities. I know of at least three displaced reps who got a decent bump in pay with their new career.

Therefore, you might want to hush and be humble. We will be in that boat someday...sooner rather than later.

The reality of our jobs is going to hit us again on Jan. 6th when most of us get back in the field. Just imagine that first call on Monday morning....what a joke.

I'll play the game:

- First call Monday morning is with a high ranked Family Practice doc

- Pick up kolaches w/ orange juice for about 35 people

- Engage in small talk with the office staff who really only care about the kolaches

- Wait 1 hour (most of it looking at my iPhone) to get 3 minutes of time with the doc who says that he is "really busy" and then drops the emphasis, "Anything new?"

- My Message: This doctor laughs when I bring out my marketing pieces and he loves to tell me that Vyvanse has been out for 7 years and there is nothing I could tell him at this point that he doesn't already know, so we will discuss Vyvanse coupons for the 37th time

- Set up another breakfast appt. for next month to talk about coupons again

- Enter my call and call my manager to give him a success story, telling him about the message that really worked well during my breakfast appt.

-RINSE AND REPEAT….6 more times :)

And take your $130k and smile. What's the problem? I can assure you, there are MANY folks out there who bust their a$$es for a quarter of what you make. Work to live, don't live to work.

This summary is so right on the money. Sad.

How many reps were displaced in 2012? Thanks for the info.

60-70 I think. I was one of them and I'm a better person for it. A career as a Pharma rep is an empty career. I wish I would've figure that out a long time ago.
Believe it or not the best thing that could happen to any Pharma rep is a layoff with a severance.

....and yet over a year later here you are on the company's website that axed your ass. Maybe your career is no longer empty but it sure seems like your life still is

Or maybe your pompous ass is reading too much into it. The poster answered a question. Typical tough shit on the internet. Your day will come it's a matter of when.

Oh, yeah??? Well, says who??

You think you're going to be a career Pharma rep? You don't see too many reps in their 40s or 50s these days. They've all been severed. My plan is to milk this job until I too get severed. Big pharma's go through a reorg every two years. Shire is big Pharma. Our time will come November of this year.
