To all unemployed Shire Reps !!!!!

What happened to all the fired Shire sales reps from last December?

In a much better place. Not a day goes by that I wish I was still at shire but it is amusing to read about what's new on here.
So there are two types of Pharma reps. Your losers and your pussies. The losers are the ones that are actually happy with such a mindless existence. The pussies are the ones that are unhappy but they're too afraid to make a move. I was the pussy and I'm grateful for shire giving me a nice severance and forcing me to get a real job. I'm using my mind, staying sharp, building a solid career path, and most importantly enjoying what I do while making good money. Every one of you Pharma reps will get laid off at some point. When it happens you'll know what I'm talking about. Good luck to all you pussies and losers.

Right on!

Pharma reps choose to be Pharma reps because it's a job for the lazy and dumb. The only reason docs still let you idiots through the front door is to keep their staff fat and happy at lunch time.

Hmm, six figures, company car, gas, insurance, outstanding benefits, stock purchase plan, etc, etc, etc. Yea, I certainly feel dumb for doing what I do. Or maybe I'm lazy as you put it? I suppose what you've chosen to do for a living is making the world quite a better place. You're probably so important to your employer aren't you? The company would probably shut down if you didn't show up. It certainly hurts me to know that someone as important as you doesn't approve of how I make a living.

Thanks for the your great insight and my family and I will be thinking about you this holiday season.

Cheers.

Former (displaced) shire rep here and I feel like I'm pretty important. I'm important to my company and the surgeons I work with. All of the things you mentioned are nice but realize that they're actually pretty common.

All the thing you mention money, cars, benefits, stock purchase plan, etc… is nice, but you have to be honest with yourself about this job. This job sucks the life out of you, makes you lazy, keeps you from growing and eventually makes you less marketable in the future. Ultimately, most of us realize that this job is a joke and doesn't provide much value. I'm thankful for this job, but I'm also realistic about it.

As a veteran, it is difficult when you realize how "dead end" this job is for career development. As for bringing value, the question I ask myself is how many times do I receive a phone call or e-mail from a customer that needs something besides the lunch menu or coupons. The answer: "Not very much." It becomes difficult when you realize how little you are needed in this job, especially for someone who has any type of ambition for the future.

Speak for yourself my friend. You must bite as a rep because I get calls from offices all the time for the breakfast menu… Do you want Glazed or Chocolate donuts? I'm excited about tomorrow because my doctors are going to be jazzed when I bring them some straight up clinical knowledge from my visual aid…. Depressing.

In my opinion career development is just a mirage. Good people always find a way to progress and it's those who took an unconventional path that often make the best decisions using their wider base of experience. Each customer contacts isn't just a request for information, it's an opportunity.

Unfortunately, we are also dealing with the market perception of our pharma jobs that can make it more challenging to move to a different opportunity. The perception is that we are lazy and unaccomplished (Which I don't agree). Having to compete against someone in the market with sales experience other than just pharma experience for a medical device position is a challenge. This is were the Golden Handcuffs begin and we stay in a position that we know is a dead end. The longer you are in pharma, the more difficult it is to get out.

Part of the problem is the culture here, especially in ADHD. There seems to be a sense of disillusionment because they have a tendency to hire outside the company when there are great candidates within Shire. There is no real plan for career advancement in ADHD. The culture of hiring outside the company with no path for growth will continue to cause complacency and stifle growth.

That and no one wants to move anywhere. They want the job to be brought to them.

Maybe you hit on another problem in this vicious cycle of complacency. This can be another reason why people in this division are losing their ambition and so they just settle for mediocrity. golden handcuffs = loss of career ambition

Dude, I think you know the answer. There were a lot of reps looking during the pathetic rollout of layoffs last year and I can't recall many leaving for other opportunities. Most of the tenured reps are stuck, at least in their minds. It's crazy how the reps I have kept up with who were forced to leave are mostly happy and have a new lease on life.
