Time to shut down NIBR

If you think NIBR is screwed up by not producing anything to sell while burning through cash just look at Research at Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics with Global Headquarters just a block away with research activities from Cambridge to Italy and beyond. Vaccines was purchased from Chiron with the vision of a "turn key" vaccines business with a world class vaccines research arm run by the world famous Reno Rippaldi its own Development arm, Tech Ops locations all over the world with a new, state of the art facility billion dollar facility planned at Holly Springs, NC and a pipeline already primed with upcoming new vaccines.

Menveo is a flop, Bexsero is a great vaccine that effectively protects babies from a horrible disease that ....bad news. ....we don't have in the US . . . good news bad news . . . . there is a lot of the disease in places like Africa where no one can afford to pay for the vaccine! New flu vaccines have either been pulled from approval or will never get approved (Optaflu - the only thing that can be produced at Holly Springs) so they have nothing to sell and no prospects for anything.

So, NVD is a microcosm of Novartis as a whole and our Research is just as broken. I've got a hint for all you scientists out there. The current situation is how Steve Martin described it in the movie, "The Jerk", "It's one of those profit deals". If there is nothing to sell there is no profit so nothing to invest in "innovation". So, get a clue or did they fail to give you one along with your PhD "Piled Higher Deeper"?

If this ridiculous company has any chance at all for survival it should keep funding NIBR and fire all of you worthless sales reps. The only hope is in biologics.

Everyone gets that we need research. The question is, why has so much money been spent and so very little discovered?????????????????????

Discovery and innovation are not like developing a sales plan and some BS POA in Las Vegas, where the more you drink the better the output. You cant get drunk and schedule the next Blockbuster. Research is real work, honest to goodness, real hard work. Something that sales and marketing folks never seem to understand and the post is only proving that point. The growth engine of the company is in Cambridge fellas, not East Hangover, and certainly not with JJ in Basel.
 




Bad management; no research. DA heads and Super DA head only play musical chairs who will be in the best position to be Mark s successor; next level is selected (the others were fired) that it does not get in the way of this game (YES SIR ATTITUDE) and the rest of research has given up.
 




All NIBR does is produce clueless idiots that they can off as talent to Development, so that Fishman can screw that function up as well. Trevor and Tim, now they are dumb and dumber, which other company would put in successive heads of Development who have never developed anything, only with someone like Joe at the helm......he is mesmerised by science, Fishman is taking him for a fool. Until NVS let's Development experts run Development they will continue to screw things up, and only get products approved which will never make any money.

Informative post. Clearly, you thought whoever wrote it (me) is in sales. Turns out, you are as wrong as could be. That is one of the problems with these ananymous boards. Everyone has beer muscles here. I am the head of R&D at another company and legitimately wonder why the output is so low. Your Sales & Marleting colleagues should roast you for such a poor attitude. He11 yeah, R&D is not easy, but we are all accountable. Even R&D. No excuses. So, now that we have that issue set aside, why is output so low? I bet if you were interviewing for the head of R&D position, you'd be singing a diferent tune about how things could be improved. And certainly, if you had to sign your name to your posts, you'd sing another tune. So, why is output so low?

NIBR's culture is rotten, the pipeline is dry, the 'leaders' are aware of this and keep milking the company as long as they can. Current compounds in research are stillborn. Mr ketchup JJ has no clue about science and can be fooled for a litte while. Once the day has come, our fearless leaders will jump ship.

Trevor? Is that you? I completely agree, putting a guy as head of the company who's only claim to fame is turning around receivables was not one of NPCs finest decisions. Mr Heinz 57 will undoubtedly drive the ship into an iceberg. But really, stop picking on the R&D folk, NIBR didn't choose a stupid MBA to run the company.

And perhaps I'm on this board because some of your very high level management have reached out to me.......to discuss a very high-level role in your organization. Having led commercial in the past, I know this board has some truth's (and a LOT of untruth's), so I am digging. I was interested in hearing from the R&D team about why THEY think things have been below expectations (I've already heard from your top executives). Coming on here and defending (so vehemently) the poor performance means you are part of the problem. If I join, you can be sure I will seek out the dead wood and jetison it. Here is the real question for you NIBR's: how much longer will Novartis fund your blue-sky research before they just dump the money into BD? Your poor performance is not a sustainable model, and as much as DV supports the idea of basic research, he's no fool.

It´s all about people - too many good ones were fired, forced to leave, demoted and silenced. New promotions and hires are only made on friendship, absolute loyality and D&I criteria. An incompetent can`t endanger your own position.
