Things I was NOT told during my interview - BEWARE:

I asked what attrition was like and I was told most TMs are here for "years and years." Turns out, only about 10 have been here for that long. The typical tenure is only 18 months.

I asked how many TMs made their commission since $75,000 is too low a salary for my family. I was told that the majority did. However as long as I've been here, only about 30% have made commission. So far, I've made little over my base and my family is eating away at savings.

I was told there would be a 401k match. The manager said nothing about having to wait 6 years for it. Has anyone ever heard of a 6 year vesting requirement?? Another hit to my family.

I was told night and weekend work was infrequent. I didn't mind working "infrequently" at those times, so that was fine. But it turns out that *most* of my work bleeds into evenings and weekends. Not because my customers are a pain, but because the night and weekend support staff at ZOLL are understaffed by half and those that are there are stressed out or downright rude or obstructionist. Hit #3 to my family.

I was told there was lots of room for growth. Turns out, I'm the 5th TM in this area in 4 years and the doctors are pissed at the terrible service. This territory has been cut 3 times in recent years and the same growth is expected of my tiny territory as was expected when it was 3x larger. Spoiler alert: there may be room for growth, but not at the pace expected in this tiny territory = no commission, hit #4 to my family.

I was told I only needed to sell one new LifeVest every 2 weeks to make goal. What they left out was that I needed one LifeVest with a *paying* insurance policy every 2 weeks. Once I account for insurances that don't cover it, indigent patients, Medicaid, high deductibles, plans with no coverage for medical equipment, etc. it turns out I need 6 orders per 2 weeks to get 1-2 paying ones. And then sometimes, they can still reverse money from prior orders and keep you from making goal. Zoll: 5. My family: 0.

You know, I read this stuff on cafe pharma before i took this job, so shame on me I guess. But I couldn't possibly fathom that a company of this size would lie by omission the way they did. I feel sick to my stomach. My new job search has already begun. But I write this for anyone else considering a job here. BELIEVE IT. IT IS ALL TRUE IF NOT WORSE.

Don't feel bad, the RM's have to be the best salespeople at Zoll. All they do is interview to feed the Zoll turnover machine. Will be a short term mistake. Get out as soon as you can and good luck!

Hello Farmer,
I agree with him and think you are whacked. Please resign

Firebrand
This is precisely why the Firebrand's are succeeding. They aren't afraid to call out the low performers and challenge them to either improve or get out of the way. The Firebrand model is taking root and has now developed into an elite force within Zoll. We hope to replicate this company wide but it takes time to acquire this type of unique talent. If you are a man the Firebrand's will emasculate you, if you are a woman they will seduce you and if you are a customer they will close you.

This type of manager speaks volumes about the lack of ethics within the company. Why would anyone ever accept a position with this company after reading this entry level bullshit. Move on people. This is not a place to start a career. Find a sales rep on LinkedIn and reach out. Then go to church and thank god you didn't put yourself in this mess!!

Here is an example of someone who has either been emasculated by a Firebrand or seduced and dumped.

The only thing your succeeding in is verifying all the threads that call out management as inexperienced, insecure and unqualified. Nice job. ZOLL is nothing more than a mistake you must explain in your resume.

With the Zoll way detailed extensively on this site, taking this job should never be a mistake. I think it's a great way to make an easy living while you get your long term business started.
You can work 2 hours a day on this job and make your quota for six months. After that maybe 3-4 hours a day. After a year you will start missing quota much more frequently and within 2 years you will be gone. Just have a plan going in and this place can be very useful.

The world has enough pizza shops. Yeah we get it. You steal money. Good for you. For the rest of the people looking at reality be warned. The territory your interviewing for is NOT an expansion area, and doesn't need TLC to get jumped started. This is a dead end opportunity that will led you back to pharma or B2B.

Was going to get on here and write about how bad I was misled into taking this job and then found this post. This is my story exactly. Would add that I was not told about how dysfunctional the inside operations were and how low on the priority list customers are. 48 hours guarantee to fit a patient if an order comes in at 3pm? Really? The postal service delivers faster. My god these doctors are mad at this company and I am so mad at my recruiting company. They are working on finding me a new placement, but what a nightmare this is.

This is my story too. I am so sick to my stomach I came here. Total lies to get me here, total bait and switch. Was told most reps are making $200. Less than 1/4 of reps are even making goal, and hardly anybody is making $200. Even fewer managers are making goal and even they aren't making that money. And on call 24/7??? I'm desperate to get out.

You will find something better soon.

There isn't any real vacation from this job. Who gives you a certain amount of days and then says that if you want Christmas Day off that comes out of those days, Thanksgiving out of the same days. After taking out 1 day for the major holidays, you get 2 weeks vacation at best. Of course you're always answering calls or fixing a problem due to no staffing with "support people". Worst job ever!

omg, so true. there are no days off. worst. job. ever.

Great list. Sadly, all true.

This is all true. All of it. Wish I'd asked these questions.

No joke. I can't count the number of sales people I've talked to who have heard about Zoll and thought they'd interview, but then dropped out when they started researching the company. Nobody is buying the "zoll is great" crap anymore. This company's reputation is toast at this point. And all the posts from "management" just prove the point - they only know how to say the word "firebrand" over and over. I can't decide whether its sad or funny that they only know how to say one thing. Kind of like the cookie cutter growth rate that is applied to every territory, regardless of its maturity, size, payor mix, etc. I used to think maybe they just didn't understand the field. Now I know they just don't know how to do anything else. Pitiful.

Word.
