Spoke with 2 midwives at a practice in my area (5 midwives and 1 MD) this week. Asked them about PPD and how they process those pts. She said if the pt. exhibits signs prior to giving birth, then they may start a low-dose SSRI. Otherwise, if at the 2 week and 6 week post-delivery appt. the pt. exhibits signs of depression they will assess using the Edinburgh scale. If the patient is mild, they will treat short term. If the patient scores moderate to severe, they refer to a Psych.
I mentioned the new treatment (they both had heard something was coming) and the 60 hour infusion. The look they gave me was priceless. One asked me, "How's that gonna work"? and the other said, "That's not what we do here".
Please, before you all jump all over me with snide and condescending remarks, read the post again. This is one example. My take-away is that the label specifically says for moderate to severe ppd. At least in this instance, that makes this a Psych. condition and product. Psych's in my area will need to see extraordinary outcomes to go this route.
I'm sure Sage has market research on all this. At least I hope they do....
