As a recruiter of top medical device sales and sales management personnel for over 25 years I was just referred to this "board" today by a client. I have to tell you, what a weak and spineless forum this is when so many can spew their hate and misery while hiding behind a keyboard. Believe me, I know this company well and I can assure anyone all companies have their challenges and the miserable former and present employees commenting here are in all likelihood the bottom of the barrel in performance and are a welcome riddance. Just ask yourself, would a top performer bother with this? No! Regardless, I thought I would offer some balance and an unbiased viewpoint.
First, it is true that entering this decade OsteoMed was an "up and comer" in a very competitive industry with noted growth. Unfortunately, to some degree, after the Colson acquisition and the installment of the current executive leadership this company moved too far from one of ingenuity to one with the primary if not sole purpose of bottom line profit. This is how a privately held company CEO and CFO gets their annual bonus--net profit! Sadly, this almost exclusive profit motive has been effectively disguised for several years now and the lack of marketing leadership and product development has caught up with OsteoMed. I have been informed that some new products are in the pipeline but nothing truly innovative or revolutionary and only will bring them closer to the preexisting standards of their much larger competitors--too little too late perhaps, especially in this economy. On the other hand you have their sister company, Acumed, who sacrificed (invested is a more accurate description) some profitability several years back and is now both highly profitable with significant annual sales growth and annually launches several new and innovative products and now has 4-5 times the annual sales volume as OsteoMed and both were equal in sales not many years ago. Sounds like one had the right leadership at the top!
Second, the comments about the current sales director, Larry Harvey, are simply ridiculous. I have recruited for, against, and attempted to recruit Larry Harvey (very loyal to his recruits). This guy is one of the most well respected and feared (respectfully) sales leaders in the medical device industry and everywhere he's been has turned to gold (J&J, Spinetech, Medtronic, Access). I have seen his resume and have recruited or represented many of his former superiors at big time companies and he has the reputation of one being the best sales force builders and developers in the business. Believe me, I know, that any RM that has left OsteoMed was due to money or the lack of confidence in marketing and they came to OsteoMed BECAUSE of Larry Harvey and his reputation and accomplishments. So, you can read the opinions of the losers and whiners on here or you can meet the man himself and judge for yourself. OsteoMed better hope that Larry Harvey can turn this company around because if he can't, I don't think anyone can! Me? I’d bet the farm on him if the current CEO can get out of the way and let the man do what he does best. I have been informed repeatedly that the current CEO is heavily into micromanagement and has to be involved in the minutest of decisions by all of his department heads. This type of approach has suffocated many companies like OsteoMed and could also explain some of the sales management and product manager turnover in recent years.
Lastly, this is still a very profitable company with a good opportunity and good potential. They have one of the best in a sales leadership role now and have greatly improved the sales regional management and sales personnel due to a more competitive compensation package. There are no perfect companies out there and I will certainly encourage my sales candidates to interview at OsteoMed given the current sales leadership.
