Merck contract resigned til 2015 Merry Christmas!!!

Your manager sounds like an ass. Were you billing for more than 8 hours per day? If not, you should get him to put in writing that he is asking you to work a 10 hour plus day and only pay you for 8. Furthermore, they hired mostly moms for this job, since most that aren't wouldn't want part time. It's just not feasible to go to your storage unit between 7 and 8. This is when most are dropping off children to school or daycare. If I went to my storage unit at 7, my clock would start at that time. I would be heading back to return samples by about 1pm or 2. Drive home, synch, email, done. That's 8 hours
Me and a few other people in our district have young kids of school age and our manager told us that we would have to somehow arrange for our kids to be picked up to and from school and even suggested to check the local YMCAs for that service. His reason is that its our scheduled work day and so we should have made prior arrangements with kids and stuff like that. He even told one of us that if its really "inconvenient" for us to comply with company policy, then perhaps this isn't the right job for us...

I'm not the one who posted earlier regarding travel to and from storage not being part of an 8 hr work day, but the way my manager looks at it is that our work day begins with the first signature and ends with the last one. People in my district including me have been called out by him for not having a first sig at 9am and having a last sig at 4pm. He expects us to get to our storage unit from 7-8, first sig at 9, last sig at 5, and travel to storage from 5-6. Travel to and from storage isn't included as far as he is concerned. He called a few of us out for logging those "extra" hours before and we were told that he would write us up the next time we did again.

With all this pressure, how is your district doing? Is your DM's focus on storage unit travel time working?

Oh and yes, we were initially billing 10-11 hours but he would kick it back and ask us to explain why the "excessive" hours. And as you all guessed it, he would not accept our reasons thus he made it quite clear to all of us... 7-8 storage, first sig 9, last sig 5, storage after 5. But only bill for 8 hours. :(

He is right about that. If you can't do the job, you can't do the job. Did you think about splitting your 24 hours into 4 days instead of 3? That makes you available to your family when they need you, but fulfills your obligation to the company. You could also arrange for the kids to be picked up and dropped off with neighbors, like I do. Did you think about solutions to the problem, or are you just complaining here? Sounds like your DM is offering a solution, not being a jerk.

8 hours includes travel to and from storage. So f you are at your storage at 9 am. first call around 10am +/- 15 minutes. take break mid-day. read/answer emails. last call around 4pm. Head back to storage. Get Home, plug laptop in, synch done for the day. What's the big deal.

We were told by our manager, during our webex meeting, that our day starts at our first call and that travel to and from storage is not included. My whole district can attest to this! We were also encouraged to do emails and other admin stuff during our lunch time. I am in my doctors office at 9 am so that I can show/account for my whereabouts! That's what the big deal is! BTW, I work 4 days so I can pick my kids up from school. I'm one day away from being full time, except that I don't get any of the benefits!

Number one, you are raising a red flag by billing 10 or 11 hours. Did he put it in writing that you should go to your storage at 7-8 and last sig at 5? I really am starting to have a hard time understanding this one. Number two, maybe your manager wants you to leave? One thing I have learned not only in pharma, but other careers throughout the years, no one likes complainers. There are numerous people out there that would kill for this or any job right now, managers know that. I'm not saying it makes their attitudes right, but reps that are problematic are often the ones that get "forced" out.

It is ok to vent but all the time and energy is more time and energy I will save for working. Just do your job..work your core 24

It is healthy to vent. But if you want to complain about drive time to your storage unit? I think that makes us all look stupid. That said, the guy who has his stuff in his house is more efficient than the one who stores it 15 miles away, so . . . you know? Plus that rep doesn't cost the company rental fees every month, or time or miles to and from the thing. I think if you have a storage unit, you should shut up and feel lucky to have it paid for, then drive to and from the thing on your own time. Maybe it's just me, but you all are sounding kind of petty with this shit. I'd fire your ass if you even brought it up, personally, but that's just my opinion.

Can you do me a favor. When you find that job that pays you a salary for raising your children and taking them to and from school, please let me know the name of the company. I want to apply and I want to submit them as the best company ever for willing to pay employees for not working.

That is wrong and illegal. Contact HR for clarification and if you feel uncomfortable with that ask your state labor board. Once you step into storage center and load or unload samples you are on the clock.

I think you are sorely missing the point. Its not about a job that pays for raising kids and shuttling them to and from school...Its about this job, this PTS-Merck contract job. Its part time, flex time or whatever hell else you want to call it...a huge majority of the people who work on this are parents with kids that still need to be given such care. Why the hell else do you think it's part time??? I don't know of any young, single, no kids, fresh-out-of-college people on this contract. Do you?!? And frankly, at the Core Meta launch back in 2010, it was made very clear, that this would be a unique working arrangment in the sense that it enabled an unprecedented balance of work-family life approach. 24 hours a week...3 days...and even in those 3 days, there was room for flexibility. Note: within those 3 working days of each week, it was stated that there was room for flexibility. So now...having said this all, where does your bullshit statements quoted above fit in???

I agree 100 percent with this. To the poster earlier who said all of this is petty, it's not when your storage unit is 16 miles away from your home. I was forced to get one since the samples were not approved for my garage since it is not climate controlled. It takes me 20 minutes to get to my storage unit from my home. That is wrong for them to tell me I'm not paid for going there and that it should be done on my own time. It is an hour out of my day, not to mention all of that mileage. I would love to store my samples at home, but it's not approved and I don't want to go against company policy.

First, even the IRS says you are not entitled to get mileage to and from work. Second, even the most progressive union can not get hourly employees paid for time going to, or coming back from, work.

So you would not get mileage or get paid for driving to, or from, storage. But your are on the clock once you get to your storage and load your samples. Where did you people go to school. "SCHOOL OF STUPID ARE US".
It doesn't matter what your DM says or doesn't say. There are laws governing employment. They reimburse you for storage because it is a work environment. Once you get there you are at work and you are legally entitled to get paid.

Ummmm....I think YOU need to check what the IRS says about having a home office and when you are entitled to mileage. I have checked this and you are not correct on this simply because we don't have a home office slated to us. Our home is our starting point ( that is technically our office) since there is not a designated office for us. The laws are very clear on this. Why do you think they reimburse us mileage to and from meetings? If your arguement were true, PSS wouldn't have to reimburse for this. Before YOU go calling people stupid, I would suggest you check your facts so YOU don't look STUPID!

Oh shit, my dm just told me he wants to start at my storage unit Monday to check the log of my visits. He's on the unit contract so I think he already has it. Has anyone else had this happen?

I worked full time for P&G for many years before this job and they required us to log mileage to first call and mileage from last call as personal mileage. They claimed that that was an IRS rule. My accountant did claim a home office.
