Lots of postings up for statin/cardiovascular jobs...any details?

The Low Down:

My background; Female in my 40s’… over 15 years Big Pharma experience, (Merck, GSK, Pfizer- 10 plus years), good reputation, I know the business inside and out, was downsized at both GSK and Pfizer, so now unemployed…

Publicis recruiter was great – nice but to the point, wanted bottom-line, i.e.: experience, with what companies, what products, accomplishments, etc… very real and genuine. Informed me at 3 people would be interviewed per position.

The DM seemed nice – laid back, admitted she already has hired two of her friends that she had worked with in the past because “they are good reps and nice people”… straight up told me, 50-60K .19 cents/mile, $500 car allowance… offers need to be made by this Friday, Sept. 9th. Work directly for Publicis DM, no AZ managers, no dinner programs, full medical, dental, vision. $700 per month for breakfast/lunches. $60 per month office supplies, they pay for tolls and parking (I think she mentioned either $75 or up to $100 per month). Made me sell popcorn, it was fun and in a very relaxed atmosphere. All in all a decent package but not what I would expect with what I bring to the table. However, the job market is absolutely awful, like never before awful. So, all in all, it is a very solid opportunity for 12 months. I would take the offer if one should be given. This could be a good “first step” to get back in the work force. I have received unemployment for about 10 months and it is depressing.

Interesting note, on the way to my interview, verifications called me and wanted me to sign a release that a former employer wanted. They emailed me a release-form, I signed and faxed it back to them. So, as I was literally on my way to the interview, when I got a call looking into my back ground before they even interviewed me. So, I know for a fact they are working backgrounds without having even interviewed all candidates. They are moving fast. Interviewed last week, it went very well… I feel I should get an offer but as of yet, I have not been called. There are a lot of good candidates and persons going for these positions. In all fairness, the DM said I would get a call by Friday either from her or the recruiter informing me of their decision as she still had to do interviews this week. Good luck to all and I think they might have another contract coming up. So, even if an offer is not extended but you did a good job and built even a little rapport, it is a good lead for the next contract.

You sound like you are with it and have a good head on your shoulders. Best of luck!

I am curious though, in your last 10 months have you looked outside the industry or thought about alternative "careers"? I only ask because my background sounds somewhat similar to yours (I have a little less experience and am a little younger, but on the same track...). I've already gone contract after being downsized by big pharma and it was not bad. I had no signature-chasing, still did lots of lunches, had a base of mid-to-upper 60s, did everything a direct rep did. Salaries are not what they use to be and the industry is going contract more and more (contract is also not what it use to be - very good, experienced reps now), but overall we are still paid pretty well and it's a decent job.

That being said, I don't see myself doing this 10 years from now. I'm wondering if you feel the same and, since you've been off recently, have you explored other options?

So Cal candidate here...no word yet. Manager said I was perfect for the job, interview went well. They called yesterday because they were having trouble getting employment verification from Organon since the company no longer exists. They asked me to fax my W2 for the years employed there directly to Publicis. I am hoping that since my interview was on the 2nd, they would not be continuing on with all this unless I was getting an offer. Thoughts? The only negative thing I have on my background is a few speeding tickets in another state...I am hoping this wont matter since we are using our own cars.

I do feel the same. It is a very tough job market. Pharma reps will be a "thing of the past", with a small core retained by the companies and all the others will be contract. We all know that. I have looked into web/computer jobs, SEO, etc... I do not want to sell DME, oxygen, I looked into home healthcare, I have several friends in it and they like less than they like pharma. I wish I could get into another field but I don't what or where. I am trying everything, sort of waiting to see what sticks or comes about. I would go back to college and further my education but I am single so I can't do that or afford it. I always wished that others on this site would share what industries they have moved on to and are happy with. Please share as I feel pharma is not fun, fulfilling, etc. anymore and hasn't been for a long time.

You are so right. The days of pharma reps as we have know it are severely numbered. The day of 6 figure base salaries and perks like co cars will soon be history. It's just about all generics and tiered co pays. It was fun while it lasted, but contract reps with half those base salaries are the new order of the day. Take a good contract position when you can, because, except for managed care, that's likely all that will be left.

Thanks for your feedback...urine or hair test? Does anyone know if taking xanax (EVEN IF ITS AN RX) will end up in an offer being rescinded? I truly take this for the right reason and under the care of a doctor. I'm not familiar if whether or not this company will see this as an issue!

I think they are looking for illegal drugs only.

I thought I had a great interview in NY but no offer. Lots of experience but previous salary was $120k. Anyone know if this was the stumbling block?

Hopefully, you will get an offer today. A lot of candidates were in the 6 figure base salary arena before getting laid off by their respective big pharma companies. Very experienced successful reps with strong relationships should be the hiring focus.
