Layoffs Coming No Doubt

I totally agree with everything you say. Very well said post! My question to the more experienced reps out there...This is very true for AZ but it is also very true for all major pharma companies. What is the real reason nothing changes in the sales model across the industry? It just doesn't make any sense having thousands of $100,000 plus people out there doing virtually nothing.
Answer:
A. Complacency
B. Self serving greed
C. In-Breeding of Senior Leaders
D. All the above

Pharmaceutical reps are not needed anymore due to the advancements in technology that doctors have at their fingertips for quick reference whenever they need information.

The only reason this antiquated model is still in place is because all of the layers of leadership above reps continue to come up with ways to justify their own very unnecessary positions. As long as that goes on, most of you will continue to have jobs.

My territory and neighboring territories are in a major northeast city. My guess is 85-90% of doctors assigned to me never see reps. At least fifty percent of them refuse samples. My neighboring district reps say the same thing. I do what I can with the doctors I can see. I hate doing it but I have to take my DM to the same doctors time after time. You would think any manager worth their salt would question this and demand to see new doctors. My boss never says a thing. I'm assuming she knows the score and doesn't want to rock the boat. I could envision taking four territories in my district and making one territory where there would be enough work barely. If this is done they could do away with my district and combine reps left over with another district. From a business perspective doing nothing is insanely bad business. I'm thinking access in other parts of the country is much better and could sustain reps. Here in my city no way this makes any business sense.

Major northeast city with crappy access? Ya think no one can figure out where you are? Jeez.

E. Validity to their own job

I do love C. So true. Brand teams bring in newbies like they are all that. Remember the Bevespi launch. Complete cluster F. Now that same person is running the show for Teze. Ass kissing and networking has and always will be the way to climb.

I have a confirmed news layoffs are coming. My manager is off the radar again in the secret meetings and going on rescheduling meetings. It's the same behavior we saw last year around this time that resulted in layoffs in December. The question this time is who'll be affected?
AZ has a long history of announcing in November there will be a layoff and that decision will be made in mid December. One year they had tree sales teams all being cut, some by 50%. They want to close it out on the books for 2021. Totally messes with any anticipation of the holidays as you wonder if you will have a job in the new year. Afraid to spend money on Christmas presents or what to say when relatives ask how work is going.

Very well said!

I work for Otsuka, nobody works here, everybody knows it, but no cuts are made because otherwise the bosses have no jobs.

We do a fine job milking patients. Over 1400 bucks a month for a mental health med that can make you fat, raise glucose and can cause akathisia or even TD.

Hoping that pretending to support management will save your butt?
You know how it goes on the Zoom calls…”thanks for the transparency, we trust you, we have the best leadership…”

who is the person in your district who ALWAYS says that?? This person is always the first to call everyone around the district to pulse check, then reveal how nervous they feel because they are scared to lose their job. But five minutes prior told the CBD/DSM how happy and please they are with changes.

I always wished I could slap this role player.

Will there be downsizings? Of course. Like it or not field sales will be here to stay in some form. Think of all the layers. If they got rid of field sales force there is no need for DSM, CBD, EBD etc. they want to protect their jobs too. Then there’s the HQ trainers. No field sales force no need for trainers or field excellence directors so they will all be gone as will all the training directors etc. Also why not eliminate MSLs too while you’re at it. We know their access isn’t much better than ours. You think a PA, NP or pharmD knows more than an MD with clinical experience. You get my point pharma has way too many layers and all the top people want to protect their cushy high paying positions so we are here to stay.
