Gender Equality at Biotronik

Only a highly insecure man would immediately attempt to put down the first successful female he can think of off the top of his head when someone raises a legitimate concern about the treatment of women. That's exactly the kind of culture this woman and the others who have shared their experiences are pointing out is unhealthy.
Only a highly insecure woman would still be trying to use her gender as a suppose crutch and trying to be a victim in 2021 - it’s laughable

I don’t know if the original poster is a man, a woman, gender non-confirming or the ABT troll from the other thread. I don’t think any of that matter since the themes that he/she/they point out are likely to resonate with many who have been here for any length of time. Biotronik has a gender equity problem and the current leadership team has done very little to change the culture for the better. Look at all the new white men hired into the leadership team over the past two years. It must start with ejecting the most flagrant sexists but for women to feel truly valued in this company the changes need to go much deeper into the recruiting, retention, management and promotion practices that overwhelmingly favors white male advancement.

Several times I’ve caught one of my reps telling doctors that he’ll have his “girls” set up an in-service with his clinic staff to review Home Monitoring, help clean up alerts or other stuff. Makes me want to vomit every time but he’s one of those old timers that either doesn’t know any better or is so close to retirement he simply doesn’t care anymore.
We had one of those in my territory. The man dressed like a 70s swinger and with his reptilian like skin looked like they pulled him out of retirement in Palm Springs to check pacemakers part time. He was super sketchy always trying to touch my lower back as he held the door for me.

I’ve been a field clinical at Bio for almost 5 years. Let me come right out and say it: the culture of this company is toxic to female employees. Similar to other companies in the medical device industry, Bio is heavily male. But unlike other companies in the medical device industry, Bio suffers from almost daily displays of patriarchy and misogynistic behavior by some of its male employees. Things were a bit better when Marlou led the company, but not so much in the past few years. Specifically, in the last 30 days I’ve been:
  • called “darling and sweetheart” by reps in my territory
  • asked to pick up Panera while my rep and male clinicals less senior than me got to meet with a big EP in my area face to face for the first time in 6 months (not the first time this has happened)
  • voluntold by my rep to take call on weekends far more than my male colleagues because I told him I can’t do 7 am cases due to school drop offs on weekdays (for the 1 hour I can't work, I'm asked to take 12 hours of call)
I’ve also watched as male clinicals in my area have been provided opportunities to move into sales at a much faster rate than female clinicals. And I know this is a Biotronik problem. Of the 14 women in my prep class, I was the only one to take a job at Biotronik and after 5 years I am still the only one not to be promoted into a senior field clinical role as a trainer or supervisor or moved into sales. I put in more hours each week than most of my male colleagues and many of the doctors in my territory will only work with me because they don’t trust many of the male clinicals for their long or difficult cases. I keep in touch with many from my prep class and they have not been treated the same way at the other CRM companies.

I know that the company sponsors EPIC Alliance and that there are a few women who have somehow broken the glass ceiling at Bio mostly in house. I don’t want to take anything away from their accomplishments but from where I sit sex discrimination is very real and leadership is doing very little to address the problems.

Am I the only one who’s seeing this, or have you experienced this as well?

It’s really tough to hear these stories, for a long time I thought I was the only one. When I came back after maternity leave following my second child my manager encouraged me during my review to consider not having any more children if I was thinking about moving into sales. He said it might be too hard for me to juggle the evening demands associated with the job like customers dinners. He is gone and my new manager is much more enlightened, but that will always stick with me. Biotronik is still a boys club with all the backward thinking that comes along with that. Get the experience you need and move on to a more female friendly company and never look back.

How come the men who claim to be “good men” that “have daughters” don’t speak up and help the women being targeted by creeps?

What’s a more “female friendly” company in your opinion? I’ve worked at several and there are others that are far worse than my time at Biotronik including the one I’m at now.

Sexism isn’t the only problem. Women in my area outnumber men, so the sexist crap is uncommon. But I've overheard quite a few homophobic slurs dropped from time to time. If I were gay, this would not be a place I’d want to stay long.
