Failure at the OSA, Biomet - Trust issues, Yes Leadership, Lack of Leadership?

What are your thoughts on YES leadership?
Has anyone had trust issues with management at Biomet?
Can corporate at Biomet be trusted? Can HR be trusted?
Is SD the downfall of the OSA?
Can SD be trusted? I have caught him in several lies.....
Is the Director Level management style at Biomet to not make a decision or give a direct answer?
In your opinion does management stand behind employees?
What is the training like at Biomet for a new employee? I have heard it is weak?
What is your opinion of product managers, design engineers at Biomet?
In your opinion do they just try to copy what the competition is doing?
What is the reason there are no innovative products at Biomet?
Why do some people at corporate have non-competes and others refuse to sign them?
Will imports of lower cost implants be the downfall of the industry?
Is the Blackstone group looking to sell Biomet?

Just curious looking at taking a position here and have heard so much negativity about this company that I am questioning whether it is a great company or not?

Will Biomet be in business in 20 years?

Thanks for your comments... My feelings exactly. I think I will pass on the opportunity. The competitor pays more and I feel they are more stable.

I heard Biomet was cleaning house internally and I thought this might be a sign of positive changes, but it appears from what I have heard that they kept the dead weight and got rid of the performers. When top down the attitude is don't hire anyone better than me..it might threaton my job?...look at what is at the bottom...wow.

Very nicely said. Need to spell check though.

I've been working for Biomet for a little under 3 years now, and a few months ago the HR director that hired me decided to leave the company - so I took her out to lunch before she left.

Because she was leaving, I felt I could get an honest answer out of her about what she didn't like about the company... So I asked her, and her response was:

"Executives have told HR to 'keep the status quo,' to not let the company get worse, but definitely do not try to make the company better.'

Makes a lot of sense considering I network with Zimmer and Depuy employees (and had co-oped at both during my school years) and their leadership is willing to actually invest in their employees by paying more competitive salaries, bring in speakers, pay more than 50% for continued education, etc. Investing in your employees results in leadership from the likes of Max Sherman, Theodore Wendt, and Mark Piazza to name a few - all men I have had the pleasure to meet, and are great industry leaders in their discipline (regulatory depuy, regulatory zimmer, and law depuy, respectively).... and they are all the product of Depuy and Zimmer. I've tried to figure out whom at Biomet is on the same level as these men, and I honestly do not think we have every produced any beyond Dane and his starting team. Binder? Yeah right...... He costs the company 10 grand a month traveling home to Texas, just getting a CEO that lives in the state would allow us to actually have updated IT systems.

I honestly do not know how this place will manage to survive the future... There are definitely some great mentors and leaders here, but they are all from the auto industry and stuck in middle management - the Executives are obviously just wanting to coast along until they retire on the millions they made when the company went private...

Biomet is a good company to start a career, but not one worth investing more than 5 years in.

I agree with several of your comments...I think Biomet is an ok place to start a career "only if you have NO other options and only as a last resort? Definitely not a place to stay more than 5 years...correct - they are not a mover or shaker in the industry and highly doubt they will be around in 5-10 years. I also agree with your comment that many of the executives are waiting to cash in...Again a reason to not accomplish anything. They are just staying for the big payout. I believe the reason the company is kept at "status quo" as you say, is upper management doesn't want to hire real talent because this would threaten their existence. I have always felt to hire those who are better than yourself and you'll have a great team.....Biomet's upper management Director level and above is overall weak, therefore they just hire status quo... I also believe surround yourself with great people and you get a lot accomplished. Surround yourself with status quo and you get a lot of complaining. Little accomplished at Biomet…Little invested in training and people….tells you something about a company. I worked at Biomet and was glad to leave…My experiences were similar to yours. Not sure how long the lights will stay on...

Anyone notice that is last poster has also posted negative comments on several topics....and all at 5AM??? something. Either you are on the other side of the world or you have NO life. Your negative, incorrect and blatantly negative Biomet posts serve no purpose other than to boost your ego and allow you to anonymously spew falsehoods.

Of course no company is perfect, this is a very difficult time in the medical device industry, the economy stinks, Obama is anti-business and specifically pro government run healthcare, politicians want to tax all devices, raise your income taxes, etc. And there are many other external conditions that have an effect on business. But....Biomet, and most other Ortho device companies, are quality operations....not perfect, but they are responsible for delivering fantastic healthcare solutions to patients. The Ortho companies represent a strong industry that will come back better than ever. I don't agree with a lot of what is going on with many ortho companies, but it serves absolutely NO purpose to trash any of them just to satisfy your individual failings and frustrations. Sounds like this 5AM poster is either a recently fired rep, or corporate employee. I don't blame anyone without a job for being let down or frustrated, but lets get positive.

How about postings that point out problems and then make suggestions on how to resolve them? Now that might be productive and worth anyone getting up at 5AM to post their rantings!

I;m sure this will result in this poster now continuing your negative comments - now you can pick on me.

Amen! I agree w/this last poster. Biomet is not perfect, but it is a company at a pivotal point, where investment in innovation orthopedic products (e.g. sports med, trauma and spine, etc.) is happening right now. I know for many, these are tough times for the reasons pointed out by the last poster. All the antibusiness regulations being dumped on this industry and many others is a direct result of poor AMERICAN leadership in the white house and in the senate. This creates insurmountable uncertainties for any and all corporate leaders. Make no mistake, these are challenging times for AMERICA. So, hang in there.... keep a positive mental attitude... do the job in exemplary fashion and things will turn more favorable. Those currently employed are fortunate, not entitled. Remember, nothing worth while comes easy as there is no progress without struggle. Thus, we individuals (team members) need to seek strength from within to overcome these dark economic times that have been foisted on all Americans by the current political environment. We all must overcome the temptation to go negative and attack, like Obama and his socio-communist cronies.

Things could always be a lot worse. Get positive.

For the last poster, your positive outlook must become endemic through better field communications that acknowledge reality and steer clear of the delusional. Together we can succeed. Divided, we fall.

Looks like you have been drinking something. Get real...Biomet is a joke. I agree with the 5AM poster.

OK now you bring religion into it? Funny...you post twice to make a point. Bottom line Biomet will not win.....I will get the last laugh....you won't...

Since the consortium take over, Biomet has lost all concept of decency, integrity, honesty and appreciation for those members that once valued this lost corporate giant. The leadership put in place came in with sharp knives that cut out the heart of the company. Yes, starting with Dane. I was there for many, many years and clearly could see ( as many others) that Biomet was growing to fast and the stock was becoming to saturated. However, you had employees that were willing to speak to their community and show support for their company. Where is that support now, lost...I can recall playful sparing between Biomet and Depuy in the local news. I hear from way to many older loyalists, of the internal abusive actions that are taken against anyone that speak out. The current leadership does not care to rebuild the reputation they had with their employees. Take a good look at those that were walked out beginning in 2007 through 2008. Almost all were removed under false pretense. Many should have banned together under a class lawsuit.

I agree - decency, integrity, honesty and appreciation is lost at Biomet. It is a sinking ship. I hope to get out before it sinks. I have personally seen internal abusive actions towards team members. It is not worth it to speak out at Biomet. They will just take you out. Not a good place to work. Not a healthy environment to be in. Looking forward to moving out of this company.

OK.....it's almost a new year. Any insight on how 2012 is going to show improvement in 1) sales performance, 2) attitude and 3) organization? In other words...how will Biomet, as well as the entire ortho device industry, get back on track!

Whether a company works for you or not is a personal preference. If you are an existing employee keep in mind Biomet is a company made up of many different people. The odds of some earth shattering change happening and making everything different are none. If its not the company that fits with you then it sounds like you need to move on. If you've already left it sounds like its best for you. It's a tough time for all companies in this business and moral is down every where. Keep in mind you may not like it at Biomet but there are those of us that do.

Who said I didn't like Biomet. Actually, I admire this company and it's ideals - especially what
Dane and many, many others accomplished. If you are with Biomet you should be proud of that past and be working to reestablish it to its rightful place of innovation and responsiveness.

I would like to see all Ortho companies recover and get back to "normal", whatever that means to each company. That's what is important regardless if you are an employee, competitor, customer or patient.

It's your defensive attitude that I find devisive and of no value to any productive discussion or exchange of ideas - get over yourself!

Yep posting on Cafe Pharma about Biomet needing a change has positive Attitude written ALL over it. I'm not defensive. Protective yes. I was simply offering to open the door for you. Maybe you should get over the good old days. I agree the Millers did and do great things but Dane isn't at Biomet anymore. Like it or not. If you want to open up a productive discussion I'm sure Serbo, Stuart or Binder are more than willing to talk.
