Drivers in Teterboro Join Union

There have been unsuccessful unionization attempts by Quest Teterboro drivers in the past. Obviously, management did not learn from these past attempts. Wait until specimen processing goes union. Can you imagine both drivers and specimen processors striking at the same time? That will shut down Teterboro lock, stock and barrel. Think that will materially affect earnings per share? That may even interrupt upper management's golf outing at Mir-a-Lago.

Did you know that unionized NYC hotel housekeepers make $24.50/hour to start? Unionized UPS delivery drivers make an average of $23.00/hour? Unionized NJ Transit bus drivers can make up to $30.00.hour. The cost of living is very high in northern NJ.

And for those who think Quest can “outsource” logistics be aware that the drivers can go on strike much faster than you can coordinate outside vendors to do the job.

How can management complain about a group of employees wanting to have an employment contract with the company? The board of directors has no problem with employment contracts. After all, the CEO has an employment contract with the company. He is not an “at will” employee, he’s got an employment contract and can’t be fired “at will”. Go look it up. Furthermore, wouldn’t a union increase the “diversity” of the workforce? Doesn’t upper management love to virtue signal with that word? Now Quest will have union and non-union employees. Another diversity category….another diversity metric.

The drivers will be replaced with independent contractors, similar to Amazon Prime. As always, contingency plans were in place and regardless of the outcome, Quest Diagnostics always prevails. The drivers will lose their lucrative benefits and and status within the organization. Further consolidation will cost many of them their jobs. It’s difficult to have sympathy for them. It was a massive overreach for a group that was more than fairly compensated.

What is your contingency plan when specimen processing goes union and they strike at the same time with logistics? Don't worry, I'm sure the multi-million dollar CEO and management team will devise a plan commensurate with their financial remuneration from Quest. :)

The comparison with UPS and bus drivers is something of an apple and an orange. Those jobs have elements that are more demanding, but can't blame drivers for wanting a voice.

A union can still have its place.

I’m glad they organized. These people were mistreated

Mistreated? So why apply for and accept the position at the agreed upon wage? Why would they stay at Quest Diagnostics if they were being “mistreated”? Last I checked, the home of the whopper is still hiring. And they offer paid training, free uniforms and discounts on employee meals. No one cares about the stupid drivers and their greedy little demands. The agreed to do a job for a specific wage and they broke that commitment. Once they are gone, no one will miss them.

The facts are that the company made negative changes to the terms of their employment in the form of various cutbacks and takeaways.

This will no longer occur with a union contract in place.

Mistreated is probably a little bit harsh, but Quest sure does not share the wealth in good times, only the burdens in tough times.

Perhaps you were unaware of this, but Quest Diagnostics is a publicly owned, contractually formed entity, also known as a corporation. Employees and Shareholders come and go from this legally formed entity freely, and therefore, the participants change constantly. The sole purpose of this entity is to serve the financial interests of the shareholders at any given time. Shareholders also frequently duel as employees, who are nothing more than an expense to be managed. Quest Diagnostics does this in accordance with the law, not at the whims of a greedy individual, who refuses to “share”. If the drivers are “unhappy” with their compensation, they should seek whatever they wish for elsewhere. Their behavior is childlike, obnoxious and appalling. We are professionals. We are better than that. And once they are gone. They will not be missed.

These comments are deplorable.

When you pay someone, it doesn’t mean you own them -

Oh brother. Another non exempt employee testing the limits of insubordination on his “off time”. Just remember exactly when and where you are required to report for work. And who gives the orders, son. Hope this helps

In the end, ourselves and the market decide what we are worth. We are all free agents...in that spirit why not leave this board and spread your misery somewhere else.
