Dont Take Contract. You will Lost Respect of Everyone.

I took a contract position last year and it was the worst possible move I could have made. I quit 3 months later and now have a job outside the industry. Once I took the contract job it made it impossible to get any other job in the business. It destroyed my career. For those of you in need of a job know it does not get any worse for you than contract.

For losers. There are plenty of good jobs available for sure. It took me 3 months but I got one. Enjoy your job today because it will be gone tomorrow idiot.

3 months? That is very little time. How good of a job is it?

Takes on average over one years for most professionals and well over a year for those with high end resumes and over 100K salary.

Everyone who is on this board "mocking" cso's just remember....your day will come too! It is the future of all pharma, so be careful about judging.

The CSO companies’ are delusional CSO are not the future of pharma - NO REPS AT ALL is the future of pharma.

Physicians are not differentiating between CSO and Company reps they don't want to see reps period.

If you a late entry product what's the point of a salesforce
If you have a blockbuster you will succeed regardless

The pharma sales position opportunities are dying--GET OUT ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 years in direct sales is better than working 4 years in contract; money, benefits, bi-weekly overhead, etc. Why join contract sales until absolutely necessary? A contract can end abruptly, why would you roll the die. When transitioning back to direct sales, your salary offer will be negatively impacted. If you have a sound track record, you can still get hired on.

Contract is for those that cannot get hired anywhere else. Just look at these people we see out there! You can see them coming! Look worse than my left overs from Thanksgiving. I could understand if it is just to make a little cash on the side, but to try to call it a career WTF? I was out with some buddies last week, both are managers in Pharma. and they totally ripped the cso's. They would never ever hire any of these people. But if you need to defend it and want to pretend it is a good job, then do it. Everyone knows the truth. I will keep my $130k Pharma job w AZ and you keep yours. I know 3 people on contract they all hate it and are very embarrassed. They cannot get anything else and can barely pay the bills.

Your points are valid, but there's no need to be a douche bag.

I was offered a BI contract and am so happy I did not take it. From everyone I have talked with and everything I have read it would have been a horrible decision. To those of you that stooped this low you are in a bad situation unfortunately. Your options are really limited now and in the future. Hopefully it doesn't matter and you only need play money or maid money as they say on here. Those are only people that really can take this positions.

I am new to this business and just offered a position in Alabama on a contract. The manager is pretty unimpressive and I rode with a rep. a while back. Again very unimpressive. From what I have read these jobs carry no respect or credibility at all. I have a option fortunately working in a family business. I wanted to get some experience out on my own. The pay is pretty sad also. I think I will go with my gut instinct and avoid this. Any one have advice for me?

These jobs are goofy enough that you could do both, and this idiotic company would be none the wiser. Why not just take their money, if they are offering it? It is not like you ever have to put it on a resume.

If you are new to the business - this would be a good way to find out if you like it, if you can be successful, and show you what being in the field really means. Some people just hack off but others really work and they get the best bonuses not to mention respect from customers as they are seen as professional and credible. It can be a very interesting job as it is what you make it.

That is the biggest bunch of horseshit that I have heard in a while. Your work doesn't have a damn thing to do with how much you make in bonus. I had a job a few years ago that did not involve any samples. I literally had a six month period where I worked maybe 10 days. I finished in the top 15% of the salesforce and knocked down a fat bonus check 2 quarters in a row. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with what you do, as you have no fucking control over anything that happens. It goes up, it goes down. No one can tel which way it will go.

Fucking idiot. You would have been the first one with the Kool-Aid in Jonestown.

Sorry you got fired.

Some of these comments are so unbelievable ignorant I can't believe I'm dignifying them with a response...

I am a former "big pharma rep" that is now a "CSO". Guess what? There is NO difference! Contract is not what it use to be. Most of us are experienced reps that just want to work and most of the jobs available happen to be contract (because this, my friend, is where the industry is going). I do ALL the same stuff the direct reps do (every contract is different, but the one I am on includes doing lunches, occassional programs, meetings, BS work, etc). Frankly, I wouldn't care if it did or didn't, I'm just glad to be working and I do my job well.

The pharmaceutical industry is changing and the rep job is not what it use to be. Many of you who post these hateful, ignorant, unsolicited comments just can't face facts and would like to believe you are worth more than you are and contribute more than you do. That's the only logical explanation for whatever chip you've got on your shoulder. You really have negative feelings about yourself and just project your frustration on to others. Well, get over it. Like any profession, there are good and bad reps, good and bad "CSO" reps. But in the end, we're all the same... the latter may be paid less, but also may have more opportunities for now since, again, this IS where the industry is going.

I agree with you. I was with a big Pharma Comp for many years and they were bought by anothe big Pharma and guess what thousands of reps looking for jobs. I am not a loser. I am a winner because I kept going and am happy to be working in this tough economy. The above poster has a loser attitude and it will bite him one day. Before I went on a contract I kinda felt the same way.. Very different climate these days. I was smart with money so I can live on less. I am happy to be working and feel it is less stress.

contract sales usually translates to less stress(unless the contract ends) and a lot less$$$!

I worked contract sales for a # of months after my pharma job went down. Although, I was happy to be working, I did not put the experience on my resume. If you are patient you will find work- again in pharma, device, labs or equipment.

You are the perfect contract rep! You do not belong anywhere else and will never get another real job because of your lack of work ethic and motivation. Only losers call this business alot of stress. We are all very happy for you that you less $ and less stress. Now go breast feed your son buddy and give mama a break. She is stressed too.
