First post ever to CP, though I have been reading it intermittently throughout the years. I watched the entirety of Mr. Coate's discussion. Unfortunately, for those of you who have been up-in-arms about his message I am here to tell you that you are on the wrong side of history. The problem with our country and those people who were "offended" (to take offense to something, the substance of what is said must resonate with that individual i.e. you see yourself in that mirror that is being held up to you) is simply this: they are uneducated.

"What?!", you cry, "I have an MBA or graduated from such-and-such university!". Excellent, good for you. However, did you truly get an education in the foundation of this country? I don't mean the white-washed (literally, whites washing out the history that doesn't put them in a positive, righteous light) history you received as part of your education. I mean actually taking the time to read and understand how this country was founded and by whom.

You were taught that the Founding Fathers were akin to Gods of democracy, not men of their time and thus bound to contemporary social constructs. They were educated, land-owning white men of means and privilege. Democracy to them did not include ALL people, certainly not Black people. The Civil War was taught to you as an issue of State's rights. This was a half-truth, it was about State's rights, but specifically the right of states to decide whether they could own slaves.

Alas, all that was "solved" by the Civil War which was won by the North. Unfortunately, this is a fallacy. True, the trade of human lives ended but the South (through terror campaigns, the Compromise of 1877 and Jim Crow laws) continued to resist. Which brings us to our current state of affairs.

Many of you seem to not only be uneducated about your own country's history but also balk at the parallels to the current political climate in this country. Again, I implore you to inform yourself about our past not simply because it is your duty as a citizen to be informed, but also to realize that what we are witnessing now is a dangerous path for this country and democracy.

The Republican Party appears to be on track to completely dismiss an insurrection against the United States government that was fomented by the ex-President. Not holding him and those who committed this violence to the rule of law sends a very clear message to those of us who understand not only the history of this country, but of world history. While it is a fact that right-wing, white-supremacists groups were responsible for the events at the Capitol on 1/6, what is unsaid thus far is that not holding all accountable will lead to an equal and opposite reaction.

In closing, as we observe all around us the inability to grasp reality (Biden won a free and fair election), the graft (MAGA and "Save America" rally...gotta make sure you sell that merch) and the fervent belief in conspiracy theories (take your pick...QAnon, COVID is a plot to vaccinate you with a chip, Biden has dementia and is controlled by the far-left in his party...and so on) I am reminded of a quote by Ulysses S. Grant. “If we are to have another [civil war], I predict that the dividing line will not be Mason and Dixon’s, but between patriotism and intelligence on the one side, and superstition, ambition, and ignorance on the other.”

Grant. “If we are to have another [civil war], I predict that the dividing line will not be Mason and Dixon’s, but between patriotism and intelligence on the one side, and superstition, ambition, and ignorance on the other.”

1619 Project and CRT training is great. However, what needs to happen at every company in the industry is Ban All White Men Interview Panels. They put in positions of Power other Unqualified White Males who fear the Browning of America and this carry a chip on their shoulder. That’s the reason for D&I discussions in the 1st place.

As MLK said, "being judged by the content of our character, not color of our skin". Or do you not believe in the words of the late Reverend? Sounds as if you my friend are the one with the chip on your shoulder. I pray for people like you to have the scales removed from your eyes and heart. You're wrong. One more thing. In terms of unqualified white males you just stereotyped, last I recall the latest Ecosystem policy removed many "unqualified" white men from the company. Most of their positions were given to individuals who are minorities. What does the current business look like at Genentech? Lost markets, lost market shares and division in the ranks. This is due to unqualified people of all colors, men and women making these decisions and perpetuating victim mentality to specific people. Genentech is lost and people with chips on their shoulder should try to create something great rather than tear down what once was a wonderful reputable company.

I’m a bit confused over all the backlash regarding the Ta-Nehisi Coates video. I couldn’t watch it due to a conflict but in order to have had watched it, I had to rsvp to receive the link to watch it. Was this meeting mandatory for certain business units within the company? If it was mandatory, then I can understand why people are upset. But if it wasn’t mandatory, I just don’t get it...

in the content above, it appears you are saying there are white people in this country and there are black peoples in this country. I will ask something of you. What do you consider “white”? If my grandmother came over from Poland and she married my grandfather a French black man, what does that make me? Do I have white privilege? My parents are mixed and I appear white. My husband is Hispanic and I have a black French grandfather, what am I? These posts have such a hateful divisive undertone. Since you don’t know who has black ancestors, why are you labeling? This isn’t white Vs black. What about Asians? What about Indians what about Native Americans? Why are you judging by the color of skin. You don’t know my ancestry!
My point is, slavery ended a very long time ago. The “Union” didn’t want slavery, didn’t believe in slavery and no one owned slaves. yet the white people in the north... are racists? There is not a wealth gap between immigrants from Europe in 1890-1920 and African Americans. Everyone was poor coming to Ellis island. These people settled in the North. They didn’t agree with slavery. Yet they are white racists? And Reparations for whom? And who pays these reparations? We are all Americans and no matter where you came from, you can succeed. Victim mentality only makes your race look weak.

Her shenanigans internally are one thing but her external visibility is just as bad and an embarrassment to the company!

As a minority, I always support my black brothers and sisters, but I chose to learn from the Asians who thrive in our society. I don't think they get the same opportunities. I can say that my Chinese bros get screwed all the time. But why the Asians are getting ahead? The reason is because they don't freaking complain about everything all day long. I watch and learn how they get ahead. On the other hand, i think my black friends are so misled by their opportunistic black leaders. They exhaust me when they complain. Q is certainly a typical chief of complaints. Honestly I don't she cares about anyone or anything but her own career.

Listen, I am a minority and I don't need statistics to tell me what I am experiencing, nor do I have any theories. I have reality. If you call someone like me a bigot, I don't think there are enough D&I projects that can save you. Equality is one thing. Revenge is another and I think this is what you are after.
