Coronavirus Layoffs

You can drop any one of these 20-year DMs in a real sales manager role outside of pharma and they will be completely lost with absolutely no valuable skill sets. And that’s one of things that they are trying to hide.

The industry's reputation is known to all. The truth is they won't get interviews for any real sales roles. They know that more than anyone, and that's why they're the glue that holds the game together. They're just trying to make it to retirement before the whole thing crumbles.

Those who don't may want to look into becoming daycare workers or hall monitors.

Couldn't agree with the above post more.

As far as layoffs, I don't think any JNJ reps (Pharma, MDD, or consumer) are going into the field anytime soon. We'll all be telemarketers for a while. If virtual selling is going to last for more than six months then the company may realize they only need 1 rep per territory vs multiple reps per territory. Then the dog eat dog mentality of reps vs reps to keep their jobs will be a toxic situation.

They will realize it sooner than six months they only need one per territory.

You know how long I’ve been reading posts like this? I’ve seen countless people laid off since the early 2000s and not any of them have had a hard time finding another job. Even in a down economy.

Go run along now.

Yeah, in pharma.

Not device.

Not B2B.

Not anywhere, but pharma.

Pharma resumes are rejected upon submission anywhere outside of the industry.

Sorry I hit a nerve, but you either know this as a fact or will learn it soon enough.

Toodles.

Why would I look outside pharma? I make jack and work 20 hours a week.
Exactly!! It's a great gig, while it lasts. And everybody knows that, inside and outside the industry. Common knowledge for at least twenty years. But when you get kicked off the gravy train, your resume isn't worth the paper its printed on anywhere else. Everybody knows that too.

Pharmaceuticals is a gravy train - agree; however, this industry is always subject to layoffs and reorganizations. All representatives are disposable and everyone knows this is true! An industry who hires anyone with a college degree that has nothing to do with science. Honestly, territories would be better served without reps and replaced with a Clinical Liaisons that have the background and are respected as professionals. Hopefully, the business model will change in the near future to more effectively mirror the environment to access clinicians without the utilization of their traditional sales force. In addition, most of the offices and hospitals over the years have been closing their doors slowly resulting in reps always having to falsify their calls. The industry needs to revamp and pass the savings to the patients instead of the lofty salaries and irrelevant jobs of a pharmaceutical representative.

What you are describing is what pharma sales used to be before Pfizer started hiring soldiers and cheerleaders (not that it is still this way- the job became too intellectually demanding and with too much grunt work for them to want to stick around). Pharma reps used to have to be pharmacists or science majors, but they didn’t have much business acumen. It still takes a sales mentality to do this job.
