B&L seeks 200 job cuts in Waterford

Yes you hit the nail on the head, get wages bill down so when the final workers are shoved out the door it wont cost them as much, wake up people this is their game they have no intention of keeping b&l open

Well said, the more I think about it the quicker Conti and Valeant are told to saddle up and f*ck off the better. Has there ever been an example of a corporation arriving to one of their companies that are in profit and demanding a 20% pay cut with the threat of shutting if not agreed? They are wrong, totally wrong and anyone thinking that working with them will sustain plants future is fooling themselves.

Conti was always an overpromoted yes man....he was that with Gowen and has always just done as he was told...he has a huge ego and sees himself as some senior executive...and he does not have the brain power...
He will screw anyone if he is told to...that is why ORegan got out...he would not do their dirty work for them

O'Regan's legacy is the issue that Waterford are facing now, failure to deal with issues and constantly paying for agreement has resulted in the lack of competitiveness being quoted by Pearson's Ringwraiths. Conti and the other Nazgúl will eventually get their way.

the place is done we may get a few more years but it is going to close why delay the inevitable its time to move on we have no new excellent products in the pipeline the government have done a deal with the company to keep us employed for a few more years until they can get another major employer into Waterford in about say 1 year and a half just in time for next general election. whatever happens the last people who leave will just be given statutory redundancy and no package from the company. The government give the company money to sustain the jobs for a few more years and it will essentially cost the company no money if we take the cut because we will be making the product and therefore making them money while the taxpayer will pay for it so its a win win for the company they have no plans for new products or direct investment into the site but they have a plan to close it down and they will and its terrible for waterford but if the place does close the government will have to get a major player into the city for the longterm so our kids will not have to leave ireland when they grow up. This company will not create a new job in the next 5 years it will just be redundancies year after year so they can close quickly or slowly and I am delighted its closing its about time the politicians took the problem in the south east seriously instead of focusing on dublin, cork and the west of ireland. We need more jobs down here so we can have dignity and our city can grow I see it has a sacrifice for the better so we can challenge the politicians to do more down here. Waterford is a joke to the government to be honest and you may not agree with what I have to say but I respect that aswell folks and I know plenty of people are worried and scared about there jobs but this is reality in my opinion I am scared of what the future holds for me and my family but I know this place in done what can I do.

Oregan is the guy who got you all in this mess. He so poorly managed the labor costs and ops costs over the years that he has you right where you are. Whether it be Valeant who bought you or someone else any smart company would come in and assess and do the same cuts. Fact is ORegan should have done better managing costs over the years and you wouldn't be in this place.

Folks Angelo is only delivering the message, yes he is a smooth cucumber, but he is just a delivery person. His boss Dennis is the main dude behind this mess with HS and MP.
I feel sorry for our colleagues in WF, perhaps our number is also being dialed for RIF too, but I can tell you after working with Conti for few years, this is probably the worst time of his life and he feels every minute of it and unfortunately he is doing someone else's crappy job.
Good luck to you all and I hope it ends well.

Conti may be just the messenger, but doesn't deserve any respect or empathy. If he or any other VP had the balls to say no to Valeants greedy, egotistic Execs and their flawed business plan (from a manufacturing standpoint) then he would deserve respect. And while people might say if he does that then he is fired well so what, only way to tackle bullies is head on.

Conti was overpromoted and does not have the intellectual capacity to handle Dennis Asharin. He will just do as is told...if he had any strength he would walk and let Asharin, who was always known as an incompetent manager from the day B+L managers first met him, to drown on his own.

Folks, Angelo feels every moment of this. He doesn't have another gig lined up and from what I was told by a current Valeant ex BL insider, Angelo was a very last minute selection to go to WF. Asharin is MPs boy, and MP is going to hang onto him and keep him safe. Angelo was chosen for his style of communications and that is it. I know Angelo is really suffering from this, and this is not how he would want to be remembered. Angelo is a very caring person and this will change him permanently. He may walk out in the middle of this mess. Valeant cronies are extremely smart and sharp, they bought BL, gutted the very core of BL using BL leaders, turned BL people against BL people and yes profited. They did the same with Medicis. Waterford will not remember Valeant as much as they will remember Angelo. So leave Angelo alone, every person on the reduction list means a lot to him.
Turn your focus on Valeant, Dennis, Schilling, MP and the scum Valeant stands for.

I'm going to throw up. If what you say is true, then Angelo is a willing stooge doing the dirty work. If he had any integrity he would walk away from this mess.

Prediction: Valeant will collapse under its own web of lies before Waterford closes. Sadly it may be too late to know.

best thing we can do is get rid of siptu these guys are a curse on us all I would like to leave the union and represent myself its my job god dam it i will take a 10 percent pay cut and we can get costs down on site no problem if we use our heads and if the company is willing

Hey pal, it's times like these, that you should count your blessings for being in a union. If you had no union, it would be a definate 20% cut and a 2 yr pay freeze. Oh yeah and then just when you think its coming to an end in 2 yrs time, MP will fuck you over again. And that my friend is how they work. Sqeeze, squeeze until the cash cow is fully drained.

Believe it or not SIPTU and TEEU are doing a great job,and I'm not in either union. Conti and Asherin are winging it back to the ego that is Pierson to ask what to do next. They have no idea how to negotiate, thought they could walk in and threaten 20% cut or closure and found that nobody laid down. Keep with your union, they will beat the greed masters.

Re: Valeant's Plan to reduce BL Waterford Closure Cost

Angelo Counti is a poor emisary.

He bumbled and mumbled badly at recent staff meetings in Waterford.
He had the body language of someone who is very nervous.
He looked to be trying to hide the haystack, rather than hide behind it or in it.

When challenged to close the plant, he claimed no plan existed.
The previous day he threatened immediate closure citing a detailed plan.

It seems Valeant came to the Emerald Isle with only 1 card to play - workers dread of redundancy. Remove that and they have no cards at all.

When challenged with regard to WFD profitability Counti admitted that profits were never better. Not surprising, as productivity gains at WFD have been huge over the past 5 years.

Why all this confusion??? Sack that dreadfully inept spin doctor!

We may have the answer now.
A source suggests an unofficial plan existed to reduce the cost of closing WFD last year.
This involved three separate rounds of deep pay cuts(eg 20%, 15%,10%) aimed at driving away the majority of the 1200 workers, without having to pay redundancy.

But at this time, Mike P gave his personal word of honour that terms and conditions
would remain unaltered for BL WFD workers.

Is this the same word of honour, he is currently providing that the 20% cut currently sought shall be the last?

Unfortunately neither Mike nor the "Counti", realised that pay cuts are a breach of contract in Ireland, - unless the company is in administration or suffering a Force Majeurs. Neither obtain in this case.

The pay cuts are therefore a non-runner, in any guise, as they have no legal or moral basis.
Valeant are expected to remove this from the table early next week and apologise for their breach of faith.
But the mask has slipped and broken.

Valeant now have a major asset preservation concern in Ireland.
A >1 billion business is at risk at BL WFD.
In addition, Valeant's tax avoidance operation in Ireland is seriously threatened.
Given Valeant's enormous debt levels, a return to paying normal tax rates could cause the collapse of the Tower of Valeant.

Watch out for an announcement from a damaged government.
It is not often you see a government masterminding, in secret, a "shock and awe" plan which breached employment law.
Not very distinguished. Personally I find it rather disgusting.

The European Court may be the ultimate judge, and executioner
of a feckless, inept and hopeless government.
