April 2014 Development Layoffs

Monday is day 1... More to come in the coming days.

Does anyone know if this outplacement company lets you use their services PRIOR to your final day of employment? Rumors indicate nothing can happen with them before the last day outside of certain scheduled seminars (if true, this is not helpful to those looking for personalized support when they need it most)

I hate to break this to everyone in development talking about jumping to a CRO. Even they outsource everything. You will be a contract employee if you can find a job. Most CROs are automating or shipping the development jobs overseas

The CRO's want the business. Not the people who couldn't manage to get it done.

Wow... pretty spot on where I see some groups that are affected...

Any numbers for September?

These initial reductions are just a signal where the start of the reductions are occurring. As the programs themselves are unwound - killed, reduced, outsourced, there will be many more. That ratio should be 2-3 times this number.

The remaining programs will reflect the realty of the new pharma market in the US. No new drugs that have generics as competition and manny fewer drugs that offer little if any clinical advantages over other branded drugs in the market.

Now there is only room in the market for true innovations.

These changes will also signal future changes in marketing and sales; with many fewer off the drugs listed above developed there will be no marketing and sales to support them. The current marketing and sales of these drugs will be around to try and salvage as much of the ROI left to recover any sunk costs but will not have replacement drugs in those categories.

The bottom-line is that these reductions are a leading indicator.

The CRO's want the business. Not the people who couldn't manage to get it done.

They are circling in for the kill. They know that the part of this work that is kept funded has to go somewhere and that they are going to get it. First it's Development that is outsourced to CROs. Then it's Marketing and Sales given to FSPs. Then this "money for nothin' and chicks for free" gig is up.

Just in time for the mid-decade celebration of Onamacare!
