There is only one corporation in the world that reinvests a larger percentage of the bottom line than Novartis and that is Toyota. Most people have no idea that a drug company has to shell out an avg of $800 million to develop and research one potential drug. That is with no guarantee of making a dime if it is not approved. So when a drug becomes a blockbuster, remember it is paying for the other 5-10 that didn't pan out. And for everyone who is crediting Europe and Canada's healthcare systems, you should do more research. Canada has about a 50% income tax rate which is used to subsidize many things including healthcare (and education). Many patients who have money come to the US from Canada because they are forced to wait for certain procedures and their doctors are not as good. Hospitals in UK are falling apart due to financial shortfalls. And there, anyone who can afford the private insurance, buys it because the public option is so basic. The EU has many countries on the brink of bankruptcy so who knows what they will look like in 10 yrs. Plus for many drugs, you wouldn't want to use a generic version anyways. If you need a drug with a very specific dose, you should know that generic manufacturers in the US can have a pretty big variance. Can be between 80-125% of the original. Go to Walgreens, you might get the 80% version! go to CVS and you might get the 125% version.
