Very well said. Great post. I would add that a removal of a rep ( which is inevitable with this buyout) also creates an opportunity because that trust factor is gone.
The answer to that question is connected to the "better" question; 'Why do surgeons STAY with their current/specific manufacturers vs. other manufacturers?'
The answer to the "better" question is... 'Primarily because they are comfortable with the instrumentation that they use to perform the operation.'
(respective, but slightly contrary, to the previous poster who credited the 'implants' the surgeons first and foremost trained on. As quoted here: "They use what they trained on first and foremost then after that if they trust the rep they will use their stuff. The fact is most implants will do a good job when put in correctly,...")
A human tibia tray, is a human tibia tray. All IMPLANTS are (basically) the same. The PRIMARY selling point vs. competing manufacturers is INSTRUMENTATION, which is ALSO the primary competitive hurdle to converting a surgeon because the doctor has to learn a new system.
So to answer the original question; "Why would (happy/supported) surgeons leave a combined Zimmer/Biomet for Stryker and DePuy?"..... the answer is; they would not, unless the Zimmer/Biomet rep told the surgeon (due to consolidation and redundency savings) "We no longer carry the Zimmer X product/Biomet X product and you HAVE to now use the corporate-chosen Biomet Y product/Zimmer Y product instead, (and consequently learn the new, respective INSTRUMENTATION system to perform those respective surgeries.
So, if I surgeon is faced with the senario of having to learn a new INSTRUMENTATION system to continue his practice, he might as well give Stryker and DePuy a try, as well, since he has always been wondering about their competing systems for all these years, anyway, IF he has to make a change at all. THAT, therefore, creates/gives the Stryker and DePuy reps an OPPORTUNITY to win-over new business. Of course, if the relative Stryker and DePuy reps are NOT already value and respected partners in the Operating Room, those surgeions will not have the option to confidently "...leave a combined Zimmer/Biomet for..." any one.

Biomet Rep here, looking for an honest discussion on what everyone is hearing and how it's going to affect us. We've been in the dark for the most part however my distributor said that he was told in a conference call that they will call the combined company Zimmer-Biomet.
Keep all the sarcasm and one-upmanship out of this thread please as they're are plenty of other ones for that nonsense.
If you were told a name you're one step ahead of anyone at corporate. We are in the dark as well. No one is really telling us much, a lot of meetings with little to no information.
doesn't make it right.
Brilliant acquisition by Zimmer. Stryker brass now looking for next target to add along with Mako, Berchtold, etc. Why would surgeons leave a combined Zimmer/Biomet for Stryker and DePuy?
my money is on:

I've heard the name is going to be one that blends the two companies. As far as what we're hearing, it's too early for anyone to know. Our leadership is a much in the dark as we are. I think they are all wondering what the hell just happened? They know everyone is needing and wanting answered but it's more than obvious they've got nothing.
I agree. Everyone is still in shock. We've been through meetings since it was announced all saying the same thing, "don't leave, don't change your life style, many of us have been through this at other companies." It's too early to have a lot of answers but tell us ALL reps included what you can. This isn't a time to beat around the bush.
I think we are all smart enough to know that they are going to tell us just enough to keep us here and keep us quiet. They can't afford to have people leave (yet)! They need us to keep the 2 businesses a float until they've decided who and what gets cut. They'll use us until they don't need us. The decision for me is, do I wait around just to work for a company I would have never chosen to work for.
We keep hearing that Zimmer management realizes they've got major issues with moral and are in need for a culture change. So if that's true why haven't they done it? Why do their employees go to work everyday wondering if this is the day they get fired? I can't see how these two cultures can blend. It's going to be a mess.
You're 100% correct. I'm in the same situation as you, what is there that makes me want to work for this new company?
Zimmer has major issues with morale, and do need a culture change it's horrid there and I know this from 1st hand experience. Their employees go to work every day for a couple reasons 1. The money you make there is way better than most orthopedic companies. 2. In order to have a job in Warsaw, where you make decent money to support your family you work in orthopedics. There really isn't another industry around here that is as stable. Grant you I wouldn't say working for Zimmer is stable because there is the fear of hearing the next dat at work oh we are laying off 100 people and are going to fill those jobs with temps.
I think saying this is going to be a mess is an understatement. Our laid back jeans and a t-shirt culture versus their 3 piece suit and no casual Friday is going to be a total train wreck. Not to mention management styles that are going to collide.
I guess it's wait it out a bit and see. Not that it's ideal but what options are there really?
There's a chance of that Financial wizard... Glad you posted your thoughts twice...to bad you have no idea what is going to happen
Impressed at how bold you clowns are under the umbrella of anonymity...
