''I should tell my story. I'm also unemployed.''

—GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, speaking in 2011 to unemployed people in Florida. Romney's net worth is over $200 million.

What a complete international embarrassment...

On his trip to Asia this week, President Obama struggled to pronounce the name of Aung San Suu Kyi, the most prominent human rights activist in the world. As The Associated Press reports.
As Obama stood next to the world's most recognized democracy icon, he mispronounced her name repeatedly.
Ever gracious, Suu Kyi did not correct her American guest for calling her Aung YAN Suu Kyi multiple times during his statement to reporters after their meeting.
Proper pronunciation for the Nobel laureate's name is Ahng Sahn Soo Chee.

The meeting came after Obama met with Myanmar's reformist new President Thein Sein – a name he also botched.
As the two addressed the media, Obama called his counterpart "President Sein," an awkward, slightly affectionate reference that would make most Burmese cringe.
Note to presidential advisers: For future rounds of diplomacy, the president of Myanmar is President Thein Sein – on first and second reference.

''I like being able to fire people who provide services to me.''

—Mitt Romney, using an unfortunate choice of words while advocating for consumer choice in health insurance plans (January 2012)

Neither of these knuckleheads has or will have a clue how to fix America. There is no question that cuts and shelters for the very wealthy have hurt American jobs, as did all the bailouts. On the other hand, no small business is going to look to hire with Obamacare. Most that I know are going to take the penalty and not pay to insure their employees. They are going to outsource even more to avoid paying premiums. We are so screwed it is not even funny. The rich just keep getting richer and the middle class shrinks to the point we cannot even afford SS/MA/MC. I for one have not been lucky enough to have some giant nextegg socked away and need SS in my retirement just to keep a roof over my head. I would not call that a "handout mentality." I have worked hard since the age of fifteen and had numerous hardships. It is really simple math. Envision a pie and that pie is all the money that is available in the U.S. Now cut it up so that 90 percent of the pie goes to 10 percent of the people. Ah, you see the problem. Nothing is left to pay for anything let alone create jobs or pay for all the entitlements. Do you really think the government, any government is going to vote themselves smaller? No. We have executives at nearly EVERY big company running the companies into the ground, selling them off, killing off American jobs and getting HUGE bonuses and salaries. In fact, in the last decade, the salaries of U.S. executives has skyrocketed even at companies that are going under. (Makes perfect sense to me, NOT!) I cannot write about this anymore b/c it's so sick and corrupt. There really is no hope at all. I have not even touched on the corruption of the people who have learned how to work the system.

I totally agree with that quote. The problem with government is that it can never be fired, especially when they promise more give-aways than Santa. That is precisely why Romney didn't win... The tax-collectors, morons and socialists outnumber the tax-payers, educated and capitalists.

Your pie-chart left-out an important fact and that is the top 25% pay approximately 86% of the tax burden. Explain why an executive would run a company into the ground... (makes perfect sense to me, NOT). Government is killing American jobs.

Nope, sorry, the wealthiest American's do NOT pay the most taxes. Their taxes are less than the middle class. Look around as far as executives running companies into the ground. Two bailout companies still gave their executives millions of dollars in bonus money despite laying off thousands of workers and being close to BK. You are delusional if you think the wealthy are supporting this system. They are not. Maybe if they were taxed more, we might stay afloat a little longer but even that is doubtful. There are NO jobs. The real unemployment is more like 15 percent and that would not count those that have given up looking. Government is certainly not helping. Indeed, they make sure their cronnies have all the money and keep giving themselves more not less. I see not reason to pay a pension of some 80-plus SS to some government lifer worth more than a million. But we are.

This conversation can go no further if you can not accept reality. It is a fact that the top 25% pay over 85% of the tax burden. We can argue whether or not they are the "wealthy", but the fact remains nonetheless.

Let's put taxes in terms everyone can understand... Even YOU.
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to $100.

If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

> > The first four men, the poorest, would pay nothing;

> > The fifth would pay $1;

> > The sixth would pay $3;

> > The seventh $7;

> > The eighth $12;

> > The ninth $18.

> > The tenth man--the richest--would pay $59.

That's what they decided to do. The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement--until one day, the owner threw them a curve.

"Since you are all such good customers, " he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of you daily meal by $20." So now dinner for the ten only cost $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes.

So the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six--the paying customers? How could they divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his "fair share?"

The six men realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would end up being "paid" to eat their meal.

So the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so the fifth man paid nothing, the sixth pitched in $2, the seventh paid $5, the eighth paid $9, the ninth paid $12, leaving the tenth man with a bill of $52 instead of his earlier $59.

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

"I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth. "But he got $7!"

"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got seven times more than me!"

"That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $7 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"

"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night he didn't show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They were $52 short!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college instructors, is how the tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table anymore.

They are not showing up at the table. Where have you been? In fact, the richest man at the table probably ate for free, having three of the others pay for him. He took a limo there to eat and will not leave a tip either.

Just one of many sites. . . do your research. The wealthiest Americans do not pay nearly what the middle class pays. Our government also gave huge bailouts to some of the most corrupt companies who turned around and spent the money on their executive bonuses.

Wow... research, really??? Do you even read your own links??? I can't believe morons like you are even allowed to vote.

On the federal level, the nearly 21,000 high-income earners who aren’t paying federal income tax represent only one half of one percent of the 4 million tax filers that make up the top 3 percent.

They account for an even smaller fraction of the 59 million tax filers who did not pay income tax in 2009. The vast majority – 56 million – of the people who skipped out on these income taxes earned less than $50,000 per year.

“It’s tiny,” Williams said of number of wealthy Americans who are income tax-free. “But these are the ones people get upset about.”

Wow, 4 million tax filers that make up the top. How about if they just pay more? My income being middle class has gone down in the last four years, not up. My taxes on all levels have gone up but not MY income. I bet the near 40 percent I pay would solve all of our problems if people who made over 250k had to pay that too. You must be one of those wealthy elite who have figured every loophole possible. Just wait, you'll get yours one day and realize we are all just a stone's throw away from being homeless.

You are a class-envy moron. The top 25% already pay far more than their fair share of the tax-burden. The bottom 50% pay NOTHING already. How can you possibly pay less than nothing? Should we just start giving them money? Taxes suck.... they suck for everyone who pays them. You claim to be middle income. I am basically middle income as well. As a matter of principle, you should understand, that the money you earn is EXACTLY that.... YOURS. Your money represents the time and effort you have put forth. If you work 40 hours a week and the government TAKES 40% of that... that is the equivalent of taking 40% of your life. Government has effectively made you a 40% slave. That principle holds true regardless of class. As a matter of principle, taxes need to be lowered for EVERYONE who pays them because nobody deserves to be a part-time slave to government.

Well, we agree on that. I also look at it like this: Most big companies have increased what they pay their executives by about 200 percent in the last decade. Has your pay gone up that much? These idiots make a fortune for M/A that put Americans out of work. Whether the company lives or dies, they get their money. I do not think I would have a job if I ran "my" business into the ground or could not come up with anything innovative. They let go the very people were innovation starts. When it comes to the small business owner - the bulk of all business (under 100 employees), many are not going to hire at all thanks to Obamacare as written. They cannot afford to hire anyone or even foot the bill for their current employees health insurance. I do not have "class envy." What I don't like is the elite getting paid to destroy American jobs. Everything is outsourced and it should not be that way. Companies need to quit paying so much for worthless executive "talent" (term used loosely). The government should penalize companies that M/A just to please their shareholders rather than for sound business reasons. I laugh because of all the MBAs out there and how completely worthless they are. We are becoming slaves - no doubt about that. Actually, we probably already are slaves to the system. Again, neither Obama or Mitt have had one good idea between the two.

Show me proof how "MOST" big companies have increased what execs. make by 200%.... and how does that impact you? Why should that even be any of your business? Why should companies NOT be FREE to pay people whatever they want? Why should government be the solution to these perceived problems? Government is the problem. Americans are out of work because of government policy, not high paid execs. America has the HIGHEST corporate tax-rate in the world.... that is why America outsources. Government is practically chasing business out of here with its HIGH corporate tax-rates. You seem to understand that, but your answer is TAXING EVEN MORE!?!?!? You want government to tax "rich" people more.... to get even on your behalf. This makes NO SENSE.

There is only so much money to go around. I think it is basic math that if your company makes X but has a profit margin of Y and you pay your top executives off of X and not Y, you eventually run out of money to pay for much else. My husband of instance is paid to find ways to save money. He outsources, not hires b/c it is cheaper. It makes no sense that at Hostess their top exectuives made millions while their workforce got a barely liveable wage. Even in BK, their executives were paid more than ever in the history of the company. (????) Executives are encouraged to save money and to merge or acquire at the cost of jobs. They make money and the middle class gets cut and jobs are not created. I agree on government policy bascially chasing jobs out of here. So, you have corporations that are deincentivized, you have the government standing in the way and, from what I hear, you have companies not willing to pay a living wage in this new environment b/c someone will take the job for less. Tell me again how we are not screwed? You think cutting SS/MA/MC is the answer? Seriously? Do you have any elderly who live off this and talk to them about how hard it is to make ends meet? Mitt did not pay any taxes for years b/c he used his church as a shelter. Dirtbag. I, at least, understand the importance of being taxed to pay for the have nots and am happy to do it. Millionaires do not pay their fair share and, yes, they should pay more but government does need to spend less. . . on themselves!

Romney didn't hide his money in churches, he made charitable donations.... I guess charity is an awful thing??? He didn't pay income taxes because he didn't earn income. He lived off his investments. Investments have already been taxed.... The government does need to double and triple dip on the same damn money.
