FIVE more months and I am done with corporate America and Novartis. I'm only 56 and could work longer but the job is no longer fun or rewarding. Anyone else retiring early so they can enjoy life while relatively young?

I’m not as close as you, but I’m getting there as soon as I can. For now, I’m hoping to get a job with a more positive work environment and a severance package.

You are so lucky. Not far from your age but not even close to retiring because of financial reasons and past mistakes. Good for you!

The business has shifted and there is little incentive for our customers to meet with us anymore at the ground level. Customer access is a fraction of what it used to be, some areas better than others, however it will continue to decline. Payors influence medication access more than ever.

Not sure how somebody can retire at 56 in this economy. You must have made some bog financial decision or live in a low cost area. Or have a rich spouse lol

OP here. Two things that helped. I maxed out my 401K starting in my mid 20's and when I was married we chose not to have kids. Never had a rich spouse, inheritance, lottery etc....self-made.

It’s not rocket science. I’m taking advantage of low taxes now and converting my 401k to a Roth account. My wife and I started without much either. You just have to keep your spending under control and save 20 percent of your income. My kids will be wealthy too because they are learning to save and invest before they even start working.

I used to think that saving for the future was good. But then ones who spent their paychecks boozing it up with hookers in Vegas showed a better roi. Wish I bought that Shelby instead of being a responsible investor who lost that amount in my 401k the past year as I drove around in a Hyundai. And it ain’t over yet.

After payroll taxes looted our income for 45 years, we’re probably not going to have any social security either.

Well I saved and paid taxes for all those years, didn’t have a strong desire for Shelby, booze, or hookers and now I have plenty of money to retire comfortably.

Uh sorry, you are NOT relatively young. Go fill your Viagra script and go to town on yourself.

Hey there, nobody ever thinks they will be 50 plus until all of a sudden it’s here. Think about what you said if and when you are the same age. You will not feel old and with todays medicines and treatments you will not look it either. I used to think 50 was ancient until I turned it. And no need for viagra either - thankfully everything is still working perfect at least for now

OP has it nailed. You only need 20-30 years of astute savings to launch your retirement career. We paid off our house in 7 years and then saved all my wife's teacher income. Pharma always paid enough to live comfortably. By that I mean not having to worry about money, nice vacations etc. I always brought my wife along to meetings and would tack on days off afterwards to enjoy the subsidized trips. Free cars, 6-8% contributions to 401-Ks and great healthcare all contribute to the best environment for socking it away. If you can't you got problems. Oh yeah, forgot about the President's clubs. She like those the best. Especially after we starting just taking the cash and using them to go places we wanted.

Have problems? Wow, that’s a pretty douche bag thing to say. You don’t know other people’s circumstances. Have you paid any attention to the cost of college that has been increasing way beyond the rate of inflation for decades? The amount that it cost for my oldest was SIGNIFICANCY less than what it will be for my youngest. Not all households are dual income. What about single parents? What spouses or kids with significant health issues? Not all of us have spouses with pensions that include healthcare, either. Plenty of people live in areas with much higher costs of living than others, too. You’re an arrogant prick.
