Wearing scubs on sales calls

What the hell do you guys sell? Is there any reason for you to actually be in an OR?

It's one thing to wear scrubs to work when you are going to spend the entire day in cases. It's another thing if you wear scrubs for shits and giggles because you are going to a hospital.

I am in device and sell implants and capital equipment. I'm in cases a couple days a week. I wear a suit most of the time. But there are days when I'm going to be in the OR all day (7am til whenever) On those types of days, I wear scrubs to work because my suit is going to sit ontop of a locker all day anyway. It's about convenience.

As an OR device rep (implants) coming on here to troll....I hope you don't wear the scrubs you put on at home , in cases. Major infection control issue.

This is so funny. As most device reps, who are as busy as most of us are, I wear scrubs to work. Most device reps do. In my area suits aren't worn too much. Docs are used to seeing us in scrubs in the OR or in the office because we are not usually making some huge sales pitch and showing some "detail aid" trying to remind them of the same worthless crap I told them last week. Device reps have to sell and get paid well for it. Docs have to trust device reps because they are implanting these products into patients. Pharma reps are very well dressed marketing people who provide mediocre food at best. My ortho docs often let me each their lunches when they come by so I want to say "Thanks". I saw a post about blood on scrubs. It is so obvious that Pharma reps don't know what we do. I saw another post about making fun of "scrub dorks" and taking pictures and having a point system. I never once heard how many points you got when you saw the device rep in a Porsche? Are there bonus points if you take it from the sunroof of your piece of crap company car. I do like the bags you guys roll around though. I always get the feeling that you are about to hop on a plane to go somewhere. Look at it anyway you want to, we are all medical professionals doing a job. It's just that some have to wear a suit to look impressive and others wear scrubs because we don't want our suits laying around a lounge floor. Either way if its money... Device wins hands down.

As a device rep that has been around along time I don't understand how wearing scrubs from one place to another outside then back into surgery is acceptable to the hospital. Where is the infection control in that, you might as well your street clothes into the OR with a cap and shoe covers.

Much too important to worry about minor things like that. Why care about the patient? Somehow you lose your sense of self importance that way. After all, it's not about the patient. It's about the money.

You are aware that you can change when you get into the OR right?? Just because you walk in with scrubs on, that doesn't mean that you have to wear those scrubs. Most of us change when we arrive and then when we leave. If you are a device rep, you would know that now wouldn't you??

And to the smart ass who says that we don't care about the patients and that it is all about the money, you need to ask yourself what good you have done for ANY patient at all, and also ask yourself why you work. We work to make money. You have zero right to comment about money unless you are a volunteer. Jackass.

But it does make you feel important running around town dressed like a doctor, doesn't it?

To the smug little twit that asked if I was aware that you can change when you arrive in the OR. Yes I am aware, because I have done it thousands of times over the past 30 plus years. But, I see reps. daily that don't change from one set of scrubs to another they just put on shoe covers and caps and head into surgery, and I believe that is just bad sterile practice. While I didn't originally didn't want to agree with some of the other posters I now believe some of you think it's cool to look like a doctor. I think it is cool to look like a professional well dressed device sales rep.

Despite your efforts, you just proved you are not in device. First you didn't realize people changed when they arrived. Once you got called out on it, you back tracked and claimed you see reps just put on a hat and shoe covers and walk in. B.S.! If you really were in devices you would know, every body has slightly different scrubs. If I walk into St. Josephs, with scrubs from St. Mary's I will stick out like a sore thumb, the colors, style etc would be different.

Go back to the home page, click on boards, then click on pharmaceuticals. You fit in better over there.

Outsider question?

Does a representatives dress correlate with his / her stature?

ie:

Drug Rep = 90K - Suit

Device Rep = 110K - Scrubs

Device Rep = 180K - Golf Shirt

Pretty Good Point!! When I first got hired out of pharma to devices, I use to always were scrubs. Whether is was in the OR or Office. Both hospital scrubs I can get my hands on and company srcubs as well. Yes. The hospital would allow them. Let's not kid ourselves, I was very proud to be part of the device circle. Not gonna lie, I felt i was better than the pharma reps when I would walk into the coffee shop and see them in their suits. I think its pretty common thinking for most. Cant blame them. It would help me get in offices easier before they knew me. Years later, in an established territory, with increased income and older. I no longer wear scrubs out of the OR. Slacks and Polos now. Now when I see the young reps in their scrubs, I see a "hey look at me, I'm in devices" vibe. Looks somewhat douchy. Not really that big a deal, but funny as time passes, how you view things. No more scrubs outside. Can easily have a lunch with a doc or a beer afterwards when I'm not wearing scrubs. Oh, well, to each his own. Entertaining thread.

I didn't think his punctuation was painful. I get what he's saying sort of. Why is it we bash punctuation with no insightful response. It's just a message board. Not a novel. Its pretty obvious you have to be somewhat smart to have this job. I guess you are one of the 110K guys.

Actually one of the $200k+ guys. I wear whatever the hell I want to wear. Sometimes I just wear a jock strap with some black socks. It's all the same.

It is like the old attorney addage: "when you have no argument, attack the facts. When you have no facts, attack the person."

"when you have no argument, attack the facts. When you have no facts, attack the punctuation."

This is the funniest board ever . I don't work for genzyme, I actually work for my self as an Independent . I wear scrubs , and they are wrinkled and sometimes different colors. In terms of the poster that put income based on what you wear.

Drug Rep = 90K - Suit

Device Rep = 110K - Scrubs

Device Rep = 180K - Golf Shirt

I payed taxes of more than 200 k
I dont see my grouping here .
But when I do wear a suit its a tailor made suit , gotta have the cuff links and the Functional surgeon( button) sleeves ( Suit snobs like me know what that is ) .
And if you are any good we all have to take in lunches not just the drug reps.
And for you bio guys tell me how you are doing with your slushy sales.

WHO CARES WHAT YOU WEAR > THE OBJECTIVE IS TO EARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN < SAVE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN < AND WORK AS LITTLE AS YOU CAN _____ SO YOU CAN BE WITH YOUR FAMILY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN .

Very entertaining thread. Man. You guys are the most arrogant guys in the business. Like a bunch of frat guys boasting about how much they can bench. Lets face it. You are a step from being a pharma rep. Thats why you guys make fun of pharma so much. See you stand in a room with other Med device reps, Medtronic, Stryker, Boston Sci, Intuitive...who do work for..Genzyme. See who feels out of place. Geez. I dont get you guys.

I think the Styker rep would be fifth in that room.

when I worked in R&D many years ago, I was in the sterile process room with my Boss. she was way hot, but was a nerd and dressed like one. NO guys ever approached her because she was such a dork. I saw through the dorkiness. One tine she admited that whenshe was a Grad Student at RPI working on Legionarres disease research, it was so hot the she took off all her clothes and put on a lab coat. I could never ever clear that imge..remeber she was hot and did not know it...real athletic body!
Well a few weeks later she came into the clean room with scrubs. she yold me that it was to warm for clothes and a cover all, I asked abot a lab coat, and she said that they were to short to wear with out a bran and panties.
Eventually about two years after we both left the company it hit me that I should have made moves on her. Never did.
Found out she became a surgical Rep and the stories were she was always naked under her scrubs...Still bet she is a Virgin at 40+

Moral is now after 30 years I still get a woody everytime I see a good looking Sales rep (Female) in scrubs, problem is if I am in scrubs....It shows!!

I love Scrubs!
