Wearing scubs on sales calls

Oh really scrub dork. I was having lunch w/ one of my docs at a local sandwich shop and we saw another scrub dork placing a big lunch order. We shared a good laugh when we asked him what hospital he was working out of. He told us he was rep doing a lunch at a local office. My doc just shook his head and said he never understood why these scrub dorks run around playing dress up. He said all of his colleagues laugh people like you. I told my doc to check out this thread for a good laugh.

you forgot to mention that the doc was a FP. Never in the OR except during rotations during 3rd and 4th year med school and damn pissed that they are not making the coin that the surgeons make much less the device reps!

Eleven year device rep. Rarely do I have to make an "office" call. All the pharma-toads have not a clue what we do, nor in most cases could they do it. Why would anyone think (As the chick rep. with skanky clothes/cleavage and bare legs said.) that surgical reps. would need to make a sales call in an office? If by "office" the pharma-dorks are referring to the o.r., then yep, I am a "scrub-dork". The reason the pharma-dorks take shots at the device guys, is because they WANT ACCESS, and can't get it. Check out medreps.com sometime and look at what the recruiters have to say about pharma-dorks. (ie: Pharma-dorks, don't bother sending in your resume.) The few times I have worn scrubs into an office, has been because the surgeons office is in the hospital, and he has asked me to drop off something, or go check his schedule, or check with his office staff about something, grab his golf clubs etc., between cases. Surgeons, would prefer to use their office time for work. (ie: seeing patients. It's a numbers game for them as well.) Standing around eating a free (Like they can't afford to pay for their own lunch.) hunk of crap from Panera Bread and trying to stay awake while listening to some douche spew their corporate minutiae about the latest antibiotic is a colossal waste of their time. Hence the reason the pharma-toads have to buy their way into the office with lunch. Not too often do device reps buy an office lunch unless it is to say "thank you" for all the business over the years, rather than "WILL you do business with me".

As a device rep., and for about 7 years with a distributor. (For all you pharma-toads, that means STRAIGHT COMMISSION, NO BENEFITS, NO EXPENSES, NO CAR, NO INSURANCE ETC. ETC. HARD TO IMAGINE PAYING FOR YOUR OWN CELL PHONE, ISN'T IT? LOSERS.) I for one, got sick and tired of the issues created by pharma-dorks. On the rare occasion I actually did make office calls, (early in my career.) the office staff assumed I was one of those over-paid pharma-pukes with a corporate credit card and could buy lunch for eighty non-decision makers. Because of you pharma-pukes, it was expected. So, make fun of all of us that wear scrubs. I could give a "f". While you are at Olive Garden, Panara Bread etc., picking up lunch for your "customers", (Wrong: customers staff.) I have been face to face with decision makers since 6:30-7:00 am, and AM making a difference, AM making money, AM helping surgeons, AM helping patients. Keep wearing your skank clothes, showing off your bought and paid for boobs, nail jobs blah blah blah., and keep pretending that YOU are the ones making fun of US. LOLOLOL. Like before, we will keep doing our jobs while you sniveling cry babies continue to whine that you can't see anyone. Oh and by the way, make sure you check in with Reptrax when you are in the hospital, since we "full access" reps., now have to play that stupid game BECAUSE OF THE SHEER NUMBER OF PHARMA-DORKS CAUSING PROBLEMS IN OFFICES AND HOSPITALS.

As a past pharma rep that hauled a!! because of the above posters' description and now a tenured device rep, this is the ultimate truth! Get off the thread if you are not OR reps. We do not need you slushing up anything anymore. Great comments above, case closed THE END! Go sell suits....or skirts. Great post comrade!!!!! They do not have a freakin clue do they?

Let's go comrades!! Unite!! We will undeniably join as one to maintain our med device superiority to crush the uprising of the pharma forces...HAHAHAHA. Geez man. Get a life. We all have to work under the conditions provided in the marketplace. We all know the next step from pharma is device, but there are good device gigs and "lower end" device gigs, Genzyme is the latter. Keep reminding yourself how important you are. Glad to see this thread getting action again. Entertaining. Go and jack more scrubs from the hospital so you can sit at Starbacks with your Ipad. Carry on comrade!!

Comrade, what exactly does genzyme do? My coffee comes from the OR lounge, lunch at 4 if lucky and home at 8 if lucky. No such thing as a free lunch right! Econ 101. Did your online degree not go over that? Good riddance! If you want to be productive, make me a sandwich!

Huh?? and your point is?? What side of the fence are you? You are not making much sense. Step back and summarize so we can get a clear perspective on your argument and can comment appropriately. More like high school grammer.

Friend,
If you can not logically deduct the comment above based on the previous posts, I am afraid I can not help you. Perhaps an IQ issue is at hand. Get out of "the box" and if you are unable, indeed, there are other professions where you may excel. Good luck my friend and good selling...

The whole premise of this post is hilarious. Does what we wear has any meaning to our results?! Measure yourself by your w2. I wear a suit when appropriate, scrubs if going into an OR/procedure that day. The OP is a douche, as anyone else that has issue with what another wears. Get the job done and STFU.

Let's start a post if someone wears a brown belt with black shoes! or Fat people, that's funny, right? Douche.

Got it! You're a scrub douche. Measure yourself by your w2 = total douche. You are why this post is funny. Scrubs and W2's is what it's all about.

Why is the world would you ONLY want to measure yourself by your W2? I can think of five much more important things immediately off of the top of my head of how I would judges myself both professionally and personally to try to define my success in both areas! My W2 may be 6 or 7th.

To the above posters comment this is why all of you Med Device reps (I have been both Med Device and Pharma) come across so arrogant and egotistical. Wait and see how Healthcare Reform, specifically the device tax and hospital reimbursements being slashed by the Gov't, works out for you in 2013 and beyond. Be prepared to feel what Pharma did for the last 8 years or so. It has already started if you have any kind of market or business sense.

Middle ground here, everyone. You don't have to be a suit fag or a scrub dork.

What sets me apart in device sales is to approach the office in nice Dockers or golf pants and a matching polo. I'm telling you in my area nobody else does this. The reception and RN staff don't know how to take it, so they figure I must not be the typical pharma rep or scrub dork. I've been able to make more appointments and get closer to the docs this way than ever before.

Wow, this is brilliant. You should write a book! The RN staff don't know how to take it. They become so confused they immediately give you instant access to their surgeon, you exceed quota, make Presidents Club, and become rich. I never knew it was this easy. All because of Dockers.

This is the funniest board ever . I don't work for genzyme, I actually work for my self as an Independent . I wear scrubs , and they are wrinkled and sometimes different colors. In terms of the poster that put income based on what you wear.

Drug Rep = 90K - Suit

Device Rep = 110K - Scrubs

Device Rep = 180K - Golf Shirt

I payed taxes of more than 200 k
I dont see my grouping here .
But when I do wear a suit its a tailor made suit , gotta have the cuff links and the Functional surgeon( button) sleeves ( Suit snobs like me know what that is ) .
And if you are any good we all have to take in lunches not just the drug reps.
And for you bio guys tell me how you are doing with your slushy sales.

WHO CARES WHAT YOU WEAR > THE OBJECTIVE IS TO EARN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN < SAVE AS MUCH AS YOU CAN < AND WORK AS LITTLE AS YOU CAN _____ SO YOU CAN BE WITH YOUR FAMILY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN .

Just a note to the suit snob..... A good tailor can put in working button holes in any suit for about $5 per.
I'm thinking of having long sleeve scrubs made with "Functional Sleeves" and calling it Bespoke Scrubs.... The latest in Med Device fashion.
Good Day, Sir.

I like it . I also want to know what the suit snob sells. Its always good when we( women) see a well dressed man. Its always good when you can say to some one hey I didn't recognize you with your clothes on. That would be to those of us that do wear scrubs

"Measure yourself by your w2" ????

What a jackass statement. If Ed Hardy made scubs i'd bet you would have a pair for each day of the week.

Former pharma rep here (2 years), and in device (8 years) who is thinking long and hard about leaving this whole industry all together. I agree with some of your points, but don't think for a second this med device industry isn't going down hill real real fast. History repeats itself and in my humble opinion, med device is about 2-3 years from going off the cliff that pharma went off of several years back. The arms race has occurred in device and companies are laying off big time. Case volumes are way way down and many feet are on the street. It's supply and demand. There's an over supply of people on the street and demand is quite low, so expect growth expectations to remain unreasonably high in this environment, while companies look to shrink pay significantly, turning the avg med device job into a 120-130K a year job, with high end being 160-175K. The old days of 200K+ are over. Wait and see, it's happening now, and no doubt with new healthcare rules it's going to continue to happen. Always good to have a plan B in mind, so don't come across as being quite so cocky about being in device, it's really not all its' cracked up to be. You and I both know that. Most reps days are numbered.

Agree. Seeing it get worse for Devices. Medicare will require that devices bid and negotiate prices. So if your company loses the bid; you risk being laid off.

Obama made a deal with Pharma saying if they helped support Obama Care, he would protect them from having to bid.

Devices got screwed. In some states, the bidding process has begun and in 2014 all States will follow. Time to get into another technology.

I hav worked in surgery for 7 yrs now and everyone in the OR makes fun of reps in suits b they look like corporate douchebags. If the doc respected the rep they could wear a thong. Your original story was both baseless and asinine.

I am sure you feel better about yourself making fun of someone trying to do their job. You are so cool. Were you the captain o the football team in high school?

Grow up.

I am the "Star Canadian Linebacker" from the Jim Rome show.

I just thought I would give all of you a heads up. I recommend not wearing scrubs when you make sales calls. I interviewed with Genzyme and went on three ride-alongs. All three reps wore scubs all day. The first and second times I thought it could be a fluke, but three? That turned me off your company and is totally unprofessional. I tell you a little story.

I was in the resident room with the Chief and two residents. A nurse came in and said the “the so and so rep is here, can he come back”. The Chief said, “Is it Scrub Rep?” The nurse said yes. He said send him back. Then, the Chief said whoever can make the first person laugh gets lunch at the restuant of their choice, at the expense of the other three. The rep came in the room.

Dialogue:

Chief: Hey XXXX, Did you just get out of a case?

REP: No, I’m going to one.

Res. #1 is it over at Children’s?

REP: No, it’s downstairs with Dr. XXXXX

Res. #2 How come your wearing Children’s scrubs?

REP: Oh, I gotta case there later.

Me: Hey man, you got a little blood on your cuff there.

I won lunch, and I still picked up the tab. I told them they could buy me a drink that night. That night we all went out on the Chief, and when I left my company, all THREE volunteered to write me a letter of recommendation. I still see two of them in the hospital, and we still bring this up.

Again, scrubs… probably not the best idea.

Super funny story bro
