Tebow

I hope all the Tebow naysayers - especially the ESPN broadcasters STFU now. Tebow will develop into one of the best QB's in the NFL.

Some people are pissed off because he mixes religion with football. You have to give the man credit for his convictions. And we're still a semi-free country. If he wants to talk religion and Jesus on the field - that's his right.

And if it's true that he passed for 316 yards and was 10 for 18 with a 31.6 yard average after quoting John 3:16 - that is some scary, scary shit.

I hit .666 in Slow-Pitch Softball one year.

If he goes to the Super Bowl you will go to church.

No sir, I will not. However, a charitable act would be an equivalent from me.

The publicity surrounding him right now is CRAZY.

And libsluv, thanks for the laugh.

Tebow is a great guy and a great ‘football’ player and I have no problem with his faith and his passion for it. With that being said I do not think he will evolve into a “great” quarterback and here is why. First, his throwing motion, release, accuracy and velocity even when he thinks hard about it and tries, is still awful and if it hasn’t been corrected in all these years of HS, U of F, NFL, in all likelihood it will never be pure enough to be a great passer. Second, good defensive schemes will always take a mediocre passer out of the game. Tebow has a solid running game and a great defense supporting him and that kept games close enough to keep him in the game and being able to win with a few plays. If that running game ever becomes mediocre and that defense struggles he will be forced to make plays for an entire game and for an entire season and he has not proved capable of that yet. Lastly, he still can’t throw receivers open and unless he completely rebuilds his throwing motion he is far too predictable and telegraphs most throws which you can’t do in the NFL. Tebow has had a handful of great throws at the perfect and most meaningful times, which is no doubt clutch and should be applauded but just like seeing a pitcher in baseball the second or third time in a game you start to figure them out and you can get hits. None of the defenses Tebow faced this year built schemes to take him out of the game as they concentrated on stopping the run, and I applaud Tim especially in clutch time for taking advantage of the scheme. Next year rolls around and if he is still starting for the Broncos, the book will be out on him and I think he will have a very tough year as d-coordinators will build schemes directed specifically at stopping him. Only time will tell but I just don’t see him consistently correcting is passing skills and I don’t think he has seen anything yet on the defensive scheme front. He may end up being a good or capable NFL QB but I highly doubt he will ever be “great”.

Since we can't see into the future, not one of us can state what his future in the NFL will be. The things that most people do not give him credit for is his work ethic and his openness to coaching. His "coachableness" or his "coachability" - whatever. His mama raised him right and he listens and respects authority, unlike 90% of the college and pro players out there.

Just like one of the stuffed shirts on ESPN said, "Elway told him to pull the trigger and he did."

I can't believe you're still mentioning his throwing. He released the ball on that OT pass in 0.5 seconds. He's throwing long, hard, fast and accurate. He's changed his throwing mechanics as well as his release. He isn't the real Jesus, you know. Give the guy a break and some time. All the haters are still expecting perfection and still rating how he is will leave his legacy in the NFL.

Atheists for Tebow!

People generally don't like other people who wear religion on their sleeve. Especially in the workplace. I don't like bible thumpers either. I had to deal with them in school, in the military and in the workplace. If people want to be preached at they generally go to church. So I understand the negative pushback.

With that said, I think Tebow is catching a lot of crap because he is publicly mixing religion with football. But I think he is a very good QB and will do well in the NFL. If he didn't publicly preach his religious opinions I think he would get much less criticism and much more public support.

If I were his mom or dad I would take him aside and tell him to cut it out in a nice way.

“…But I think he is a very good QB and will do well in the NFL”?

WHAT???

He has a below average Passer rating at 73, league average is 84, league leader is 125. Ranked 30th in pass attempts, ranked 34th in completion %, ranked 32nd in passing yards, tied for 27th with 12 passing TD’s and ranked 28th in passer rating. How do you think that is good??? I disagree, if it weren’t for his ardent evangelical beliefs and following you wouldn’t hear a word about him!!! He gets way more press and attention than any other QB save for the top 5 or so.

I have no problem with his penchant for praising Jesus or anything else. I couldn’t care less. I look at the statistics and his play. Statistics do no lie and he is not winning those games by himself on any level. I agree with the other poster that the Denver D and the #1 running game in the NFL kept all the Tebow games close. Making one throw a game is not “good”. And sorry his mechanics are still awful on most throws and far from being good.

Never has eight wins been this celebrated in the history of the NFL, nor has any one QB done less to garner this much attention and “believers” even though it was Denver’s #1 running game and a decent D why they won those eight games. He looked awful in every game except the Pittsburg game and Pittsburg had secondary woes all season. Look to see Tebow come crashing back to earth this week against New England.

You're being way too hard on the guy. For God sakes, he just started his pro career. He's in his second year. He carried Denver into the playoffs. Compare him with other rookie QB's. How many QB's start in the pros in their second year out of college?

Most of the publicity on Tebow has been negative. I contend it's because he's a bible thumper. He should really leave his religious beliefs in the locker room. That way he could play on a level playing field with everyone else. What he wants to do off the field is his business. But football and religion don't mix.

His popularity rating would be much higher minus the religion.

America isn't the land of tolerance contrary to what many believe.

I agree with the article.

What the hell is the big deal? If someone gyrates like some tribal dancer doing pelvic thrusts in the end zone after a touchdown, nobody says anything.

"The question’s not a bad one, but what’s surprising how many people (Bill Maher included) have reacted so passionately and angrily to something that’s so inconsequential to them."

Says it all doesn't it. Great post DD.

I’m not being hard on Tebow the numbers are the numbers, and they tell the truth. To your point he IS a second year QB not a rookie and there have been plenty of rookies and second year players that have been leaps and bounds ahead of Tebow who received far less hype. The Broncos are in the playoffs because the Raiders couldn’t win a game and because the Denver D kept games close enough and the running game kept defenses off balance enough where one well thrown ball can win a game.

I honestly like the guy and thought he was one of, if not the best, college players of all time. I am a big proponent of one’s constitutional right to free speech – so for me I love that he is ruffling feathers with his faith and, although I am not overly religious and certainly not “born again”, I think it is great that with all the craziness in the world TT is a young man doing great things for humanity. With that being said he’s just not a good QB at the NFL level and if you look at him without any bias there is no way you can say he is good or that there is evidence that he will all of a sudden become good.

Are you a muslim by chance?

I think you will eat your words as the playoffs continue.

Watch Tebow beat New England. I expect you to show up after the Denver win and tell us it was all a fluke.

See ya next week.

Nope not a Muslim, what does that mean anyway? Oh are you one of the delusional "born agains" who grossly misinterpret the bible to serve their agenda? Sure if Tebow throws for 250 yards no picks and a few TD's and actually is the reason they win then sure I will admit I was wrong. I like my chances. He can't throw and can't read coverages and in the NFL that is not a recipe for success.

Why do you like him so much?

I just don't like bullies who take cheap shots at people. It's a big transition from college to pro ball. It takes time to acclimate. Only a full-blown idiot would expect Tebow to enter the pros and pick right up where he left off in college. Now he is coming into his own. We've seen sparks of brilliance from him this year. As he learns more - he will become more consistent. The guy is 6'2 and 235 pounds and runs like a halfback. Those who claim he has a weak arm obviously didn't watch the Pittsburgh game. I saw him throw the ball across the field on a sideline cut while the defender was right on top of the receiver with pinpoint accuracy. I think he's being persecuted for his beliefs. Is he a little overboard in the religion department in public??? Sure he is. But it's no reason to target him unfairly as compared to the other rookie QB's in pro football.

Tebow is not a rookie and no one on here is bullying him!!! All they did where state the statistics! Again there are plenty of 1st and 2nd year NFL QB’s who have done far better than Tebow without the attention! The league is filled with first and second year players who have played great this year and in years past. Just this year you have Andy Dalton and Cam Newton who as ROOKIES make the second year Tebow look like the Junior Varsity.

“We've seen sparks of brilliance from him this year” – Back the truck up!!! He threw a few good balls that are a minimum standard for a NFL QB!!! After throwing balls in the dirt or way off target for most of a game one good pass is bound to look brilliant for those who are rooting for him, especially if it is in a crucial part of the game. I don’t blame Tebow. It is not his fault that there is all this media attention and I disagree that it is his outward pouring beliefs that is causing the negative reactions. If anything I think people/analysts are scared to talk bad about him because the religious right in this country, as well all know, is very powerful and influential.

Why people are talking so negatively about him is there is a ton of hype surrounding a guy who is a below average QB and none of us get the hype surrounding him. I don’t ever recall a time of Brady-mania, or Brees-mania, or Manning-mania, but every time I turn on ESPN that all I hear and see. People are not negative on Tebow they are negative on the hype. Here’s how it goes,

Non Tebow Supporter: “Tebow’s numbers are atrocious, I just don’t get why there is so much hype around the guy.”

Tebow supporter: “Stop hating on him because of his religious beliefs”!

Do you see the flaw in your logic? I said nothing about religion but your response is about religion, and oh BTW almost every athlete pro, college, especially those from the south almost always “thank god” for the win! Comedians have been making jokes about it for decades so this is nothing new.

There are plenty of 1st and 2nd year QB's in the NFL who have done better than Tebow? Name them. I am not disputing that a few rookie QB's outperformed Tebow - but they are far and few inbetween. Be sure you also list the NFL rookie QB's who did worse than Tebow. There are many of those.

In his first 2 seasons Eli Manning had ratings of 55 and 75.

One of the greatest, Joe Montana, wasn't that fantastic in his first 2 seasons.

NONE of the the great QB's kicked ass in their rookie years. All of them got better with time - which is to be expected.

I believe a lot of people won't say it - but the fact that Tebow wears his religion on his sleeve pisses them off and it results in unfair criticism.

The fact that Tebow took his team into the playoffs says something - but naturally I don't expect you to admit it.

Lighten up on Tebow. Give the kid a chance.

HE did not get them to the playoffs. The Bronco’s D and running game and the Raiders choking got them to the playoffs. He won eight games…that usually isn’t playoff worthy.

Also Tebow IS NOT A ROOKIE!!! Let’s look at second year QB’s.

Of the currently active QB’s who actually played in their second season in the NFL who had better numbers than Tebow in his second year are listed below. Some omissions are guys who started as rookies but got hurt prior to or early in their second season like Matt Staford and Sam Bradford. I also did not include rookie seasons like Cam Newton and Andy Dalton. If you take a look at the stats of the QB’s below you will see the spread from them to Tebow by and large is wide:

Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Tony Romo, Matt Schaub, Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Alex Smith, Ben Roethlisberger, Jay Cutler, M Vick, Joe Flacco, Carson Palmer, Mark Sanchez, Josh Freeman, Peyton Manning.

Lastly in Tebow’s break out “let it fly game” against the Steelers he still had a completion rate under 50%. Again not sure how that equates to good let alone great to anyone…

Again if you understand and know anything about football you would understand that his D and running game kept them close where one good play can win a game. Look at the games where the Broncos get down a few scores and Tebow has to throw…they didn’t turn out so well…

You're exaggerating a bit, aren't ya???

Here are a few second year ratings on the QB's you listed:

Brees - 77
Manning - 76
Smith - 75
Palmer - 77

Tebow had a 73 in his second year regular season.

Romo didn't even play for his 2 first seasons.

Schaub threw 51% for only 495 yards in the entire season.

I never claimed that Tebow was the best 2nd year QB ever in the NFL. I simply said that he is a good QB with the potential to be a great QB.

There are MANY QB's who did great in the NFL with 2nd year stats under Tebow's. You just didn't list them because it would hurt your argument. For some reason you are biased against Tebow. I don't know why. Only you can answer that.

I have never seen a team go to the playoffs without a QB, have you??? The performance of the QB is CRITICAL in elevating any team to the playoffs. And crediting Oakland for Denver's surge into the playoffs is hilarious. One could thanks dozens of teams for losing and allowing other teams into the playoffs. What a stupid argument.

I will get the last laugh when Tebow wins against NE. But naturally you will have a dozen more excuses. The weather, the refs, the air quality, the wind, the halftime band, Mitt Romney, etc.... I know your type. Hilarious! :D
