SME

What's the difference between a SME and a Key Account Executive? Responsibilities, Pay?

An SME hunts for new business. A KAE services specific high volume accounts and up sells them as well.

KAE's get hammered with billing problems, service issues, and handles the maintenance of the whole account. It is a much more stable role and you see many employees stay in the role for a long time.

SME's have a quota hanging over their head monthly and it is a burn out job. You don't see many reps stay in this role, either by getting fired or the rep leaving. High pressure and turnover. However, it pays well if you can sell and get lucky with a favorable area and comp plan.

Not all KAE's stay for a long time. In Phoenix, the average life for KAE is about 12-18 months. They also have a call-in for each month that they are responsible for. It is a crappy job. They get yelled at for all of the lab's mistakes and for all of the over-promising the SME did when they sold the account. (Yes, the SME's lie to sell business - shocker). The SME's are basically used car salesmen in one of the lowest respectable markets, while the KAE's are the crap scoopers that follow the SME's picking it up as they go. Avoid either job if you are in Phoenix. Management is a joke - support is non-existent. They will throw you to the wolves in a heartbeat to make themselves look better. Take my advise and go somewhere else and get a respectable job. In the healthcare industry, LabCorp reps are laughed at. They aren't respected sales people. Find another job in the medical field.

Well said!

KAE's are trash (wo)men. Don't get all grouchy Oscar. Don't forget most KAE's barely graduated from Sesame Street. If it weren't for sales people (SME's/SDE's) you KAE's wouldn't have accounts to "service." That's why corporate refers you as "service" people. You KAE's stink like rotten bananas.

Your post is exactly what is wrong with Labcorp as a whole. The culture at Labcorp is so much based on worth/value and if your not perceived as that, then you are treated like crap. You are supposed to respect your fellow employees and be in it together. not here though! this place is all about number 1 and there is no collaboration. Most self centered place I ever worked for and management is a joke. There are no real leaders here. Has to be top ten worst company cultures around.

Don't worry. With theranos coming on to the scene labcorp will pay their employees less and less every year and will continue to not care about it's employees. Labcorp is so behind the times with their archaic software and technology. It's only a matter of time the stock plummetts and quest and labcorp are no longer the big 2.

LabCorp pretty much sucks butt! Reps get dumped on with impossible task. It is just amazing how much BS this company dumps on us. Will be out of the shit hole soon.

It gets worse every day. Never seen so much micro managing and BS busy admin cover your ass type work thrown on reps. The whole point of the job is to get new business not to do fucking reports

If the company spent as much time on worrying about creating busy work for reps as they did to assist and cut the red tape at home office in order for us to get business, everybody would be better off. This company is so messed up and poorly managed

The reports are for you to do so the people up above can justify their gravy position of doing nothing. Look at this spreadsheet I created this will generate more sales. This will show how many extra CBC’s we can from a single Pediatrician over the next week. That is very impressive and looks great let’s roll it out to the sales force. Our job is once again saved.

You're probably right. Which is the main problem. You don't need to pay somebody sitting in an office to drive sales, you need to hire the right freakin sales rep to do it out in the field and have people at home office remove barriers to get sales. It is harder to get labcorp to agree to things to close the sale then it is to close a client...... and oh yeah by the way, you drive sales through a stellar compensation plan so your reps will get more sales and exceed quota. The way it is now, they developed a comp plan to demotivate reps and not give a shit about making money or working that much, because it is near impossible in this comp plan. #salesmanagement101 ** this place is so poorly managed, these hacks wouldn't make it many other places

To labcorp moronic sales management..... Hire the right rep, implement the right comp plan, remove barriers and red tape at home office to close the sale, and provide the proper tools to the rep.. that is how you drive sales and motivate reps! How hard would that be to do? Because currently you have many good reps, a horrible comp plan, and there is way too much red tape within the company........

You are so right. The sales management in California I swear did not really understand how the comp plan worked for the longest time, if they do now. The same could be said about some of the RMBD's. You could tell when prospective new business was being discussed, or call in was being discussed. The culture is just horrible, It's awful and really in general a miserable atmosphere. Before they can hire a sales team that knows how to cold call and close business in California, they first need a sales director that knows how to cold call and close business, and sell. California hasn't had this in three years now. Most anyone who had solid industry connections and experience has happily moved on.

LabCorp could actually be a great company, but right now it sucks ass. I don't think it will get any better either.

I can't tell you how many times I go to an office expecting to do the job I was hired for (sell), and get hit with nothing but issues and problems from provider offices. Never a chance to provide any value because I am to busy putting out forest fires.

Billing issues, IT issues, missed pickups, missed orders and wrong results just to name a few of many complaints.

The crazy thing is that none of these issues are because of my doing, but I am the one who will get blamed if this shit is not corrected. I have never seen a company that have their sales reps take care of IT and billing issues like LabCorp. What the hell are the billing and IT people doing?

and.....If you send any issues to these departments, they expect you to go back and provide the customer with the answers. Shit.....Do your job IT and billing. I don't speak your IT and billing language. I am a damn sales rep. By the way...when I have to do this BS, it take time away from what I was hired to do.....sell.

Lab Corp - do you want me to be a sales rep or admin? Right now, I am admin and this is what I did not sign up for.

Since you want me to be admin, I will stay at home and do admin. Fuck selling!

The WEST sucks so much its unbelievable. Good People are dropping like flys. It would be nice to see that DK hires all new Covance management to take over the WEST. The WESTERN GIRLS DO ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING! IT"S A GIRLS CLUB! THEY SHOULD BE FIRED!

It seems like all folks do are spread sheets. Spread peanut butter sheets! Good for Path INC & Quest. I'm hearing from other reps all you reps do now these days are spreadsheets and conference calls. HA! Is da truth? bahumbug
