Michelle Weese

Where is Rob and HR team in this Corp Affairs hiring debacle? Shouldn't they step in?? Who has grounds to sue based on mistreatment? Did that happen at BMS -- was she sued?
At BMS, Michelle's HR partner, Rhonda, was incompetent and careless. I know that's shocking to read. Some BMS people were contemplating suing. I should know because I was interviewed by their lawyers.

@BMSinsider what did the end game look like? Did it start with the CEO change? Or was she under pressure before that and the CEO change became the nail in the coffin?

Rather than admit he made a horrible decision when he hired Michelle, Giovanni directed his leadership team to help her succeed. Clearly, she didn't win that team's respect because the minute Giovanni announced he was retiring and Chris Boehner was his successor, Michelle had to have known her days at BMS were numbered. It's shocking that she was given another, high-profile role. It's not shocking that the team at Novartis is now in shambles.

Who knows. BMS is a close group and many of Giovanni's leaders were close to the corporate affairs teams. The grapevine was full of stories that Giovanni's leadership team couldn't stand Michelle, personally and professionally. She never commanded respect, acted like a goof, said silly things, and didn't know the pharma industry. There was a genuine respect for the corporate affairs function and Michelle destroyed that. While I clearly have no respect for Michelle, Giovanni's unwillingness to admit he made a mistake by hiring someone so underqualified is really the reason for the BMS disaster. Rumor was that Giovanni was hesitant to hire someone with no pharma experience, but Michelle wooed him into taking a chance on her. My guess, and that's all this is, is that Michelle knew her only advocate was Giovanni and once he announced he was retiring, she had to have known her time was up at BMS.

It seems like Michelle is drawn to ex-White House people. I know someone who used to open letters at the White House and a cleaner. Will they get a role in her catalogue of cretins too?

I have seen restructures and brutal layoffs in companies.
But there's been nothing like this in any corporate I've worked in.
This is hundreds of people at every level.
She confirmed an entire team in jobs and then a few weeks later told them they all had to reapply for their jobs.
Add into that the micro management, patronising ill-thought out emails to staff, demoting people then congratulating them for being demoted. This is the work of a narcissitic monster not a Novartis type of leader.
What exactly does Vas want?

Michelle’s Gang of Amateurs
This new leadership team is the Bad News Bears of pharma - completely out of their depth and destined for failure. Watching Michelle’s year end wrap up was a snooze fest. Three junior ex BMSers took center stage showing an embarrassing lack of experience with buzzword bingo, lack of respect, and an obsession with Beyonce (dont they read the news).

Does Vas even know what a circus of fools is running this function?
What will happen when real work needs to be done? Feels like all of us with experience will need to pick up the actual work as this new leadership team stacks up sky miles and self promotes.

Well that wokeness will work well with the new administration. Perfect timing to f up the Public Affairs team now. Bring in more BMS incompetents and shiny objects

It's been a couple of years, but I recall it was part age discrimination and wrongful termination of people who - until Michelle arrived - were valued employees who had years of performance reviews that exceeded expectations. Unfortunately, NJ is a right to hire/fire state and I'm unsure if the lawsuit was filed. But Michelle's time at BMS was pure chaos and the level of anger directed at her was unpalatable. If Michelle reads this...the definition of unpalatable is difficult to tolerate or accept. Reading these four pages of comments is painful because what is happening to Novartis appears to be the same thing that happened at BMS. I feel for the Novartis team. The BMS team is recovering, but only because Michelle is gone.

It does look the same. Age discrimination and valued employees. Maybe the only difference is Novartis seems to be hiring BMS people in the top jobs. What was their reputation and impact track?

New leaders often bring in their own people. We're used to that. The people Michelle hired at BMS were difficult to work with in that they never acted interested in listening to anyone who had been at BMS a while. When we learned our jobs were changing, they made us feel like we should consider ourselves lucky that we kept our jobs because many were displaced. Many of her leadership team seemed besotted by their new titles and annoyed that we were not equally impressed. How could we be when we received emails with misspellings, grammatical errors, and punctuation problems? Also, how they went about 'leading' was troublesome. They often approached work with a 'I'm the boss, you are not, do what I tell you to do' attitude. To be honest, the BMS corporate affairs department wasn't perfect before Michelle, yet she and her leaders arrived and made changes that felt like change just for the sake of change. If there was a strategy it was never properly presented or explained so that we could see the vision. Michelle only seemed interested in breaking the culture of a strong, respected team. I think we would have been open to change if Michelle was smart enough to approach it in a different way. Without a vision that everyone understood and supported - even if it pushed us outside our comfort zones and we had to think/do things differently - she and her team were bound to fail, which is what happened at BMS. I have some connections at Novartis corporate affairs and it's just sad to see what is happening there. It could have been avoided if Michelle and her supporters from BMS had an ounce of humility and were committed to learning from their tenure at BMS.
