Merck seeks to reinvent R&D unit: WSJ

Research sites will be based in London, SF, Shanghai, and Boston.
I guess the rumors about WP were true. Moral is at the lowest I've ever witnessed. It's like a morgue here and the people left know they have no future.

Here is what they did not state. There will two hubs in China. NJ is done all around. Merck tried to get a tax break for job retention. It was turned down. Merck wanted a break if they move people from one location to another within NJ. I don't think Boston is the right hub. It's more political.

From what I hear, Rahway will be vacant and everything is moving to kenilworth. I hope nj has a plan for all the vacant sites! Whitehouse, cokesbury, branch burg, Rahway, summit and union... GONE!

Boston is just Merck being a follower. Everyone else has a research site in Boston, so of course we had to have one there too.
Well it's a shame seeing the legacy great sites getting closed down. WP and RY WERE Merck. Now they're just shells.
Can't wait for this torture to end for me. Hopefully 2014 is the year I get my wish.

The SF, Boston, London and Shanghai "hubs" will be dedicated to business dev & licensing. These are not research sites. West Point and Rahway (what's left) are safe (for now).

Whomever told you otherwise is out or the loop.

If keeping RY and WP is part of the plan, even short term, someone should come out and say it. By not saying so they are destroying morale and productivity while encouraging the more marketable (better) staff to go elsewhere. This is Management 101 and the fact that it hasn't occurred to the likes of Pearlmutter and the EC is just par for the course.

FU Merck!

Agreed.

And by "for now," I meant for the next year or two. This time frame of relative stability assumes more deals are done, key new products actually are approved and the Januvia franchise doesn't erode much further. A rosy scenario, but one I personally believe to be likely.

And even of the above scenario does unfold, this doesn't mean the layoffs stop.

If that was the case they would have told us. Someone would have made sure it leaked out.

P-mutter needs to look closely at Pharm. Sci , there is a lot of wasted money spent on departments that have no projects. Huge big salary liabilities which could easily be outsourced.
