Layoff email-here we go again........

Following this logic Merck is staffed by nothing but losers because they have been firing people for years now and these new layoffs were announced to continue til 2015. Don't you think they would have run out of losers by now unless the leadership keeps hiring and developing losers thus perpetuating the loser generating machine. So by inference the leadership is made up of losers too because the loser cascade starts at the top through the hires they make.

Put it like this, if merck has 10,000 "winners", and only needs 5,000. Then they must get rid of $5,000 winners. If you are not needed, you must go. Whats going on is not a temporary cyclical blip, especially in sales, it is a severe contraction.

What the executive committee of the company that wants to be "the best healthcare company in the world" is really saying to Wall Street is simple:"oh we haven't been straight with you on how much fat we kept the last round we did cuts: back then we said we're cutting off the fat and keeping all the muscle. Now we're coming out and saying some of that muscle was not really muscle, it's fat, but don't you worry, we're cutting that off now and keeping the REAL muscle."

I don't trust them.

Nope, just saying "we have way too much muscle in the US".

This morning there are articles about China is pushing the price of drugs down or make the big pharma comnpanies compete on price. Pfizer and Merck were named as two companies not too pleased by this initiative. Is this one of the emerging markets Mr. Frazer is talking about? We are doomed.

Why should Merck and Pfizer be happy. They have been robbing American people for 30 years for overpriced drugs. The competition is a good thing. We are Merck will need to adjust accordingly.

I'm sure your mother, Gladys Kravitz, would be proud of you.

you are pissed because we have done nothing for 10 years and the gravy train is coming to the last stop. I am taking it like a man. I worked my ass off for 15 years and every year it got harder and harder because of the politics in this place. Do I like the fact it's ending, not at all but it is. I am sending out my resume, learning about new technologies, and hoping that I will find something the day after I take the package. A good piece of me does not want to take the package but I will be let go by mother merck anyway.

Won't it be fun to watch Mr Frazer and Mr Reid squirma as they will have to explain why the Asia strategy did not work for them in the end? The Chinese will get the best of them and of big pharma and leave them for road kill after they are done picking pharmas brains.

Merck has yet to lay off anyone who is not considered deadwood. They make money, if the people in the US suck at a high cost, why not go into other countries. Why pay a jackass 100k when you can get a worker who wants to succeed for 40k. We are the ones that caused this.

In the rush to emerging markets with "visions of sugarplums" dancing in the ceo's eyes put there by chair bound beancounters, exporting jobs as fast as they can, the big boys in lawyer pants think they have it all figured out. That's why they're sitting on the cash. So they can spend it in china. but china doesn't play by our rules, trade fair or respect our patents which they steal at every turn. they will talk our ceos out of thier big big boy pants and hand them thier heads.

Hi, China! We sure do want a BIG piece of your emerging market. We'll give you lots of jobs in the name of establishing a presence and you'll give us lots of patients to sell our drugs to.

Well, Merck, we want your jobs and your drugs but what we'll pay, we'll decide. We don't have the loyalty of your American staff to worry about.

You are an idiot. I have seen may great reps (and managers) laid off who WERE in fact worth their money. I personally work very hard (and yes, it is a full day). You get what you pay for with a 40K rep is all I can say.

Agree totally. You get what you pay for with a $40K rep.

I am the top paid rep and fully aware of it. I put in a full day to earn my pay. I will make all those crazy 7 am or 5:30 pm appointments because I am being paid well and I should. I will camp out at a P&T Committee member's office literally day and night until he agrees to vote for us because I am paid well to do so.

R&D you dummies. The reps should stay. except you two. :)

You are not a sales rep. Or way too new. If R&D cranks out a me-too product, how do you grab market share? Selling, relationship, and all those other intangibles come into play. Relying on Merck to hand you a first-in-class breakthrough product? Those days are long gone. Read up on Capoten vs. Vasotec will be your first assignment. Then read up on Lipitor vs. Zocor will be your second assignment.

So you think camping outside a P&T members office all day till he agrees to do what you want is sales?

So you think camping outside a P&T members office all day till he agrees to do what you want is sales?

You have not been in sales for too long to understand. Camping outside a P&T Committee member's office is a metaphor. It means you spend extra time to answer all his questions and solicit his support. Especially if he is a key and vocal guy on the committee versus a few others who are token and silent members. Once a product is placed on the formulary at a hospital it has a rippling effect to the practicing physicians and the community. You can apply the same to, say, devoting a lot of time on an endocrinologist who is not on a committee but highly influential. If he/she is willing to write a letter or appear at a P&T Committee meeting to request Januvia, the chance is much higher. None of these fall into the 8 calls a day, Ken and Barbie sales they have been teaching for the last ten years. Showing legs, boobs, GQ suit and hair won't do it. This kind of work does not bring home sales immediately. It can take weeks and months, roadblock after roadblock, and a lot of detective work to achieve the goal. The new Merck may frown on this "non-productive" activity which is why we are hurting.
