5 years ago today: Pioglitazone data - when all 30 authors are wrong
On 8 October 2002 Nick Freemantle (University of Birmingham) reported in the BMJ (BMJ 2005;331:836-838) that clinical trial findings involving the drug Pioglitazone (the PROactive trial) had been misrepresented and that the conclusions were unsafe.

A response by a reader (Dr James Penston) was pertinent and bears on the responsibilities of authorship. His letter was entitled "When all thirty authors are wrong".

Penston writes: "Perhaps this was simply an innocent error. But it is hard to believe that none of the thirty authors – including 27 professors – were aware that it would be misleading to interpret the data as showing that pioglitazone reduced macrovascular events. Given that 28 of the 30 authors had financial links with the pharmaceutical industry and that the study was funded by Takeda and Eli Lilly, it would have been prudent to avoid at all cost the charge that this manipulation of data stemmed from a conflict of interest."

All of the posts related to the site above conclude what most reps are saying in the field, don't use pio in symptomatic CHF patients and Actos has not been shown to sig. increase total macrovascular events vs. standard of care. Secondary benefits are rarely mentioned in the study overview. As far as the funding of PROactive, who do these guys think would ever fund such a costly study but the company that produces the drug. Get a clue chicken little.
 




The FDA seems to have had ample evidence about the risks associated with Actos and Avandia. In 2006, FDA drug safety advisor Dr. Rosemary Johann-Liang urged the agency to add a black box warning to Actos and Avandia because of serious cardiovascular risks. Instead of heeding her warning, however, the agency reprimanded Johann-Liang and did nothing to adequately inform consumers about the possible risks associated with Actos and Avandia.

Is this made up bull crap or does anyone out there really know if this was indeed a true account of what happened involving this Doctor and the FDA?

You are all fucked, you talked your shit how Actos was so safe and had no issues. Besides having the same cardiovascular issues as Avandia you guys were saying how different you were from Avandia. Guess what your right... You cause bladder cancer. Actos suppresses p-par alpha which ,over supresses the immune system and guess what increase of bladder cancer. When this comes out I am going to tell every doctor had bad your drug is you fucking dirty ass reps. Get your resumes ready. HA HA !!!!!!
