Ethicon vs Applied Medical

Saw 3 ees reps banned from a hospital today for trying to sabotage an applied trocar evaluation. Materials said the cost savings was around 100K. Haven't had any issues with the trocars and they are going to convert. I service AV and looking to get into disposables. Materials guy said applied is the place to be. This account is a part of a large system that is going to completely convert and a GPO that is going to go sole source with applied trocars.

What kind of money can one make selling trocars? This is not a Ethicon Applied Medical question just a money question? I cant imagine talking about trocars all day is exciting but if the money is right....

Thanks so much!

What region are you in?

if you have a GREAT year selling trocars you can make 150k. Keep in mind, this is a banner year and you are screwed for next year. Some body from Applied will say this figure is low, you can make 300k per year. One guy out of 140 reps made close to 300k, but he will Never come close to making that at applied ever again.

I make good money at Applied and very rarely sell trocars. My Gelport business is out of this world and commodity items like scissors and pouches are easy pick'ns. The ethicon reps in my territory are too stupid to realize that cost does matter and that when they lie to accounts to try and keep me out, it winds up biting them in the ass every time. Applied is a good gig. You don't have contracts selling your business for you so you have to have some skill. If you don't mind knowing that you weren't responsible for the growth or regression of your territory, then go with Ethicon. The ethicon reps in the southwest have a very bad reputation and it's only getting worse. They are all saying they are with j&j now to try and smooth over the bad taste they have been leaving.

I asked the OR buyer in my territory about this b/c I was going to interview for the Ethicon position. He told me that even on contracts (his is HPG) they were looking at a switch to Applied.

Having worked for both, I would lean toward the Applied option if you want a challenging job. You actually have to sell your stuff. EES is more of an account manager position and the contracts sell your stuff for you. I have not seen one hospital convert from Applied to EES but I have seen numerous accounts switch from EES to Applied. Trocars are a commodity item and there is not one account out there that can't save money by using Applied. Again, Applied challenging and EES not so much. Applied less money better culture. EES more money, less skill required, and so-so culture. With the way that Applied operates corporately, it may be the better choice in this economy.

EES reps are customer service reps not sales people. Contacts drive the business. Many EES reps find out how bad their sales training was once they move on to a real device company and find that they are over their heads.

Everything depends on what part of the country you are in and who the previous rep was. The reputations of the Applied and EES reps in my area are both very poor. The EES rep thinks he is entitled to all the business so the nurses and techs hate him. The Applied gal is so pushy she has been asked to be replaced. You could do well at either place, but it looks like Applied is starting to take the upper hand in the trocar market. They own hand assist and the only reason a doc would choose dextrus over gelport is personal and not clinical.

Applied's trocars are universally despised throughout the country.

Case in point:

How many hospitals have you seen convert back from Applied to EES, due to overwhelming surgeon request?

Now...how many hospitals have you seen convert from EES to Applied due to overwhelming surgeon request?

Not that you can't succeed at either place, but the trocar market is commoditized and is simply a price war. Also, hand-assist is not a growing 'market'.

Interesting. How do you explain that EES market share in trocars is shrinking and Applied's in increasing?

And if they're so universally despised, then why does EES still pay a royalty on each trocar it makes to Applied because of the design?

Everybody knows hospitals are doing whatever they can to control costs.Applied is the low cost alternative. As soon as they get sick of hearing the docs complain about the applied trocars, they will switch back to EES trocars.

I started working for Applied right our of college, and was there for three years. After I got the experience that I needed I left for J and J. The money is MUCH better, not to mention the car and benefits. Applied doesn't want to pay anyone, and that is why everyone leaves. If you make 150k one year....you were at the very top and do NOT expect to make that the next year. Nothing against Applied, but just concerning money and benefits J and J wins every day and twice on Sunday.

JNJ is a great company to be from , and Applied is a way to get some experience . where is all the love here , I have to LOL every time I read all these posts . There is enough business for all . All of you are fighting for the same piece of the PIE . Don't you realize big brother will always dictate what you will make on the bell curve, why do you at EES always get your forecast readjusted in the middle of the year ! Company car , allowance what 10 15 k a year maybe , oh and parking . Come on youngins grow some and go out on your own and make big money . Are you banking 30 -50 k a month after expenses , Do you create your own hours , do you create your own destiny , do you enjoy your paperwork .....
So you are a company guy nothing wrong with that, save as much as you can, max out on your 401k your savings bonds and shut up and enjoy what you do
Do any of you know how much it costs to make a trocar and how much profit and what a cash cow it is for all companies .
Oh do you get paid 20 to 30 % on some of your sales or just .000015 for maintaining your business .
WAKE UP SHUT UP AND GO MAKE THE MONEY FOR THE STOCK HOLDERS CAUSE your 100 to 150 is nothing , oh don't forget the company car

Trocars 4 LYFE. What a career-builder.

A monkey can present a spreadsheet showing savings to MM. Not to mention, if you decide to remain within the same specialty, you build absolutely NO relationships whatsoever.

'Hey Doc, remember me? I was the douche bag who chastised you for using a 5mm clip applier, and tried to shove a $20 trocar down your throat...'

"....but you don't have to worry about that any more because I've since moved to J&J and now I'm here to rape you and your hospital with higher prices and a crappier product."
