Depressed

I’ll put my portfolio up against yours any day of the week. Good luck to you when your “business” fails, btw. I too have my own consulting business and can make an extra $250K a year on the side, all with the blessing of my big bad corporation. See that is what is nice once you get to a certain level in this business your experience is valuable and people pay for. My most recent venture was to help a small startup build out its commercial business unit. Made a fast $50K for a few days’ work.

BTW glad to see that you started your own business yet you troll on Café Pharma. Wow you must be doing so well that you get to sit in front of your computer and comment on an industry you dislike and no longer work in…um I just think you proved that you are the stupid one.

Uh, caveman, you're a liar, btw. Grow up and stop trying to fool people here.
And our "portfolio" is huge, so once again, don't know what you're talking about, of course.
I like to hop on CP once in a while when at my computer to see what's up in the old biz. No more, no less. You're an angry and really ugly person. I hope you're not married and have kids, b/c if so, I feel sorry for them. Your lies and "bragging" are boorish and really just immature. If you're actually 40....scary! Have lots of growing to do still.
Huh. If you're "all that" as you think you are/say you are, why are YOU on CP making up Cinderella stories? Shouldn't you be counting all your millions of $, Bill Gates?
What a turd.

Cleary misery loves company and you pharma losers like to come on here as some form of therapy. So keep hating what you do, and allowing others to dictate your happiness in life. That makes a ton of sense.

And you're here why? Or were you transported here telepathically?
YOU are CLEARLY a disturbed individual.

Nope I'm stuck in an airport and find this whole pharma depression thing fascinating. My claims are 100% accurate if you don't believe me that's fine. You wanted to tell me how successful you are but when I state my success I'm full of BS? Interesting double standard don't you think?

Here is my last question for the dearly depressed. If you are so depressed and you dislike your job and/or this industry why in the hell do you come to a blog about pharmaceuticals sales? I would think you would want to get as far away from it as possible especially in your free time. Cleary the dearly depressed are masochists to come one here and talk more about a job and industry they despise and is the source of their depression.

Oh so anyway you called BS on me, gee your story sounds air tight. “I like to hop on CP once in a while when at my computer to see what's up in the old biz”…Sure ya do. I thought being an Amway distributor “owner” would keep you busier than that.

Nope like I said I am stuck in an airport and find this whole ‘pharma ruined my life’ thread fascinating. That people actually blame a job for their depression they willing applied for and accepted and are under no contractual obligation to keep is just fascinating. My guess as to why this doesn’t happen in other industries as so many of you posted, is that people in other industries wouldn’t put up with working at a miserable job. It seems to me that very few of you seem to be able to pull yourself away from a job, let alone a website about the job you hate and that to me that is amazing.

This guy is quite possibly the most arrogant individual ever on this site. Quite a feat!

Amway? Funny. You so funny, Mr Gates. I said from scratch and I meant "from scratch". Building and all. Customers and all. Big business plan and all. Oh, and I'M not depressed. My life is about far more than bank roll. Glad to have some, but not my existence, my whole world, like it is for you.
I guess both of us find CP interesting to read, huh? Difference is, I'm not the angry braggart. One of us is fighting with seemingly everyone on this thread, and it's not ME doing it.
Maybe you need a little break from all your worldly business dealings, to chill. Have a drink and stop thinking about money. Geez. Ugh. Meh.

And this group of the dearly depressed are nothing more than spoiled children who can’t handle the slightest bit of adversity and are not appreciative of the job that they have.

Let’s see, read the below statement and think what people who actually go to work every day at the crack of dawn and don’t come home to the sun sets would think about your ‘oppression’. Talk about mind-numbing jobs. What do you think an accountant does all day, Or a purchasing agent? Or an actuary? Not only is it the same thing every day it is in the same little office every day. Better yet think of the 9-11% of unemployed people who are standing in line for hours to get a ‘mind numbing’ job…

Pharma reps in general: get basically a free car, above average health care benefits with lower than average employee contributions, they can w2 over $100K as an entry level rep and senior specialty reps can make $200K+. Many times there are sales contests where reps can win money, gift cards or high ticket merchandise like TV’s and iPads. Many companies offer a generous 401K match. Many drug companies offer stock options and grants or an ESPP program to help create additional wealth for their employees. Pharma reps more or less create their own work schedule as reps rarely if ever work from 8AM to 5PM week in and week out as most of their calls are made between 10AM and Noon and 2PM to 4PM or they bring in lunch to the offices as a way to see their customers. On any given week a drug rep can eat lunch for free most days and they also do dinner programs at decent restaurants where they get to dine for free once again, while listening to a physician talk about their products as they interact with their customers. Even the most “micromanaged” rep will only see their boss five days a month but even that is a rarity. Most communication is done via, email, conference call or over the phone. There are generally a few meetings a year that the reps have to attend, most often at nice locations and nice hotels. While there, again they eat and drink for free on the company dime. The job consists of doing a few repots, input calls into a computer, do an expense report, and some other administrative tasks in addition to their core of their job which is marketing to health care providers face to face.

See how petty the dearly depressed are!?! Their worst day in pharma is better than 98% of the rest of the world’s best day. Maybe a bit of appreciation for what you do have will help clear your depression…

Well reading my reading comprehension challenged douche bag, if you read my very first post I said I didn’t understand why people let this job affect what was important in their lives like family, friends and the things they enjoy outside of work. I clearly stated that what was important in life was finding happiness outside of work. That’s ok, good for you for building a business, that is amazing. Again I did not start the “brag secession”. I always love when someone here says how great they are and then someone else follows up with their own accomplishments and then the first person calls the second person a bragger. REALLY?

I can only imagine, with intelligence and intellect like yours, what amazing business you started from scratch., I’m guessing car detailing or windshield repair…

I agree with “Mr. Gates”. I am so tired of my fellow reps who bitch at the slightest bit of change. If we have a new report to do they call each other like a sewing circle and complain. Oh the horror of having to do a onetime report that will take you an hour. Sound the alarms!

Oh my...too bad you did not get to sip Jim Jone's purple Kool-Aid...you defend the pharma and describe it as it was about 15 to 20 years ago...

That may be your pharma...My pharma is a living hell, with a dopey DM trying to chase me out after 25 years in the industry....

pharma is not a job for any self respecting human being...the people that defend it are generally tools with no clue, and no self esteem...

Wrong again.
Like I said, you have NO IDEA, genius.
Keep working your pharma job. You should be embarrassed to tell people that's what you do for a living, as it's a joke now...not like it used to be years and years ago.
At least I can be proud of what I do and what I've accomplished.

bravo!!

this is what I don't get about pharma...the last few years I was in that industry I was so
embarassed by it, I WANTED TO GET LAID OFF???

So many people cling so tight to that job...I guess they have gotten so lazy and lacking
in skills, that they don't dare try something else...

My god...get over pharma sales people...the job is a joke, and so are u if you choose to
make a career out of it...

I am so glad I came across this thread. Thank you! I agree, most of these are waaaaaaay too long so I'll do my best to be brief.

-I am over 40, 10 years with same company, and yes I make great money. I haven't made less than 125k in 6 years.
-The depression is REAL! I was targeted as a a rep that relies on relationships and someone who bucks the corporate scripts, backing docs into a corner, and saying how I feel over a year ago. I went from someone who took pride in and enjoyed what they do who has won every possible award to the "dark sheep" and a cancer on my team.
-I started getting therapy and taking meds, I couldn't sleep, I started drinking more. I never want to get up in the morning, I stopped watching my favorite shows like "modern family" because nothing is as funny anymore.
-I think my young immature partners who are parrots and butt kissers see themselves as geniuses who want to teach me how to do my job and are pissed because I make more than they do. The 10 years, success, and loyalty mean nothing to them.
-I am strong, I never thought anyone could make me feel this way. I don't even remember how it feels to be happy.
Yes, this is all a result of my "easy" high paying job.
Unless you have been in this or a similar situation, you wouldn't understand.
-I

yes, I hear you, been there myself and completely agree - pharma will try to drive you crazy - save your $ and wait for a buyout - I got one and it was payback for all the hell for the last 4 years when the corporate culture became corrupt and filled with entrapment for highly paid reps

You have clearly not read "mr Gates' previous postings. How dare you!

Well thought out observations. Heart felt understanding. I was going down the same slippery slope. The position I was in with DME became extremely micromanaged with no respect or trust. Much intimidation. It affects both work and home life. Another common thread I believe is ageism. In our forties and fifties, Many of these companies believe its time to show the older folks out the door. Sometimes its by constant berating, sometimes its an attempt to "frame" and question integrity. A bunch of B.S. really. For me, because I do value myself and abilities, I know I have much to offer (still at this seasoned age). I had to exit stage left and hold on to the little bit of sanity and health I still possessed. The Intimidation was ruthless...I don't need that kind of treatment, nobody does. Even IN today's economy. Life is precious and definately too short to work in misery. It is a bitter sweet feeling to leave and I understand what a difficult decision it is to make especially after 10+ years as some have posted. You've invested so much time in building relationships with patients and physicians. But I do encourage you to move on, and know you can be a valuable asset somewhere else where you will be appreciated for your wisdom as you move into Chapter III of life. Best wishes!

I went through the same exact thing...Male in my 50s...Young DM starting makiing up lies and harrassing me...I knew there was very little I could do about it...hung in there as long as I could but ended up leaving with no severance, no package, no nothing...

But you know what?? I am happier and healthier than I have been in years!! Not going to go back to pharma (if anyone would even hire me at this age) and decided not to go back into traditional corporate america either...(If you "win" the rat race you are still a rat as the saying goes.)

Pharma is a racket...Pharma is a ponzi scheme...Pharma is the most corrupt industry in America////

I escaped with most of my sanity and am healing from the trauma of being pushed out (forced) out of pharma....what a waste of time it ultimately turned out to be...

The young Kool Aid drinking reps don't realize how ruthless the managers become with older reps...it is unrelenting punishment for the crime of being older and experienced...

i could not take the brutal treatment...my dignity is more important, even if i have to live in a small studio apt., and drive a beat up car or motorbike.

for years I have wanted to get into pharma sales. the freedom, the great schedule company car etc. tried and tried and just couldnt get an interview. I have sales experience but these jobs seem impossible to get. Then i get on these boards and read this crap and am happy that I never got hired. The industry truly sounds horrible. Im in sales but really dont deal with micromanagement etc. the stress of meeting a number is always there. Im actually sick of sales in general. yes the money can be great but as I get older I feel like all I really do is walk around and bs with people all day that really dont want to talk to me. I am sick of chasing people, hounding people and begging for sales. It is so boring and mind numbing. I wish I could do something else but its impossible to get out. I would love to start a business but dont have the $$. Must admit though you people really do have many perks that other sales positions dont provide. I wouldnt bitch so much.

hummmm....#98, are you for real? I was just perusing these posts for my nightly chuckle, but the verbiage used in that post was almost a verbatim excerpt from a previous post... (oh dear naiive self) ~so is this a manager post making fun? Aw welll...still I laugh. Freedom feels SO GOOD!
