D Day

Did anyone get let go yesterday from Genzyme?

Yes. Some very hard workers who have maintained key accounts. Gone.

When the "strategic partnership" was announced, Genzyme employees were told by JLH that one of the objectives was to guarantee jobs for them. This was amended to "for one year". What happened yesterday sends a clear signal that anyone can be let go at any time and the "guarantee" for "one year" was total BS (no suprise, considering the source). Anyone who breathes a sigh of complacent relief that they have been spared is not being realistic.

First of all I do use my MBA. I was in diagnostic lab sales in New England. then I went and got my MBA because I could not stan being around people like you. Now I work for a major Venture Capital Firm as an anylyst. Helping to make decisions on Lab and Biotech funding and IPO's. I warned my company to stay away from Genoptix for the last 18 mos...Guess I was pretty smart. Also My Droid was set to CAPS so before you judge my personality why dont you think. Second of all...Talk to anyone who worked for ESOTERICS or US Labs and they could have told you thaat the stuff Genzyme and LCA told you was pure BS.

I bet you that by the end of the year 2011, there will be more layoffs and the West side lab will be closed.

Oh, and I was a member of the Republicans Club in Cambridge, Hate Obama and have voted on the Conservative side for my entire life. Oh, and most of my business professors were so right wing they made Sean Hannity look liberal!

Finally, I am leaving these boards NEVER TO RETURN!! (ALL CAPS!!), your all assholes.

So very true. We've always been at will employees but recently it's become very apparent that anyone can be let go at any time. This week was stressful for all of us. Genzyme used to be a place where you built up your career and where you had some kind of security because you did a good job, worked hard and were rewarded. I don't think anyone feels secure at this point. We are becoming more and more like pharma every day and this latest churn and burn was the latest sign of that.
I was not prepared to be let go this week but next time this mass lay off occurs or there is a restructuring, I will be prepared.

To be fair to LabCorp, they have not given any guarantees regarding whether there would be layoffs. It was Genzyme, via JLH ("Phase II WILL go forward!! Well, maybe not.) that sent out the memos stating that the goal was to see that all employees would be "treated fairly" and be "offered" jobs with LabCorp. For a year. Or maybe 2 months. Hopefully the Genzyme severance packages (such as they are) will be honored by LabCorp. Thanks, Allston.

There is some misinterpretation regarding the message from Genzyme. Everyone would have a job on Day1 but that SEVERANCE would be available for ONE YEAR. Everyone was not guaranteed a job for one year. To all my fellow colleagues who didn't make it through. Take care, be well and go find a company that values and respects your hard work and dedication.

Unfortunately, the previous poster was spot on. It is the way that things are done at LabCorp. For the person who posted "...Genzyme used to be a place where you built up your career and where you had some kind of security because you did a good job, worked hard and were rewarded..." Those exact words describe LabCorp in its former state, not so long ago. These days we have a lawyer for a CEO(that should pretty well sum up everything that you need to know about LCA), and a Corporate mentality that has makes the term "micro-manage" seem laughable. Corporate is interested in two things: 1) bonuses and 2) making acquisitions to prop up the stock price so that investors don't really find out what's going on behind the scenes.

In truth, LCA has/is losing business like crazy. Corporate is powerless to stem the flow of lost business because they insist on putting cronies/incompetents/butt-kissers in positions of authority, that have no clue what they are doing, or how to do it. There is no leadership, from middle-management on up. The good managers are only able to keep their jobs because they have become adept at dodging s***balls thrown at them, from Burlington, and trying to keep idiocy-generated stupidity, i.e. formal company policies, to some sort of manageable level. They spend an enormous amount of time trying to keep the "target" off of their own backs so that they can make some real differences for employees in spite of corporate stupidity. Gone are the days of employee input and feedback. Any suggestion, idea or notion offered by employees, these days, only serves to have said employee labeled as a trouble-maker or disgruntled, necessitating their removal from the employee rollcall, ASAP!

LCA cannot and should not be trusted, most especially when it comes to promises made regarding severance. Prime examples of their misleading and devious policies are the way that they treated the folks in Evansville, Louisville and a few other places several years ago, when they closed the lab, and shifted the work to Columbus. If you go back to the not-so-distant past, on the these boards, and read some of the threads you can get a real feel for how LCA treats their employees. You will have to wade through some crap to get there, but you should be able to decipher which post are genuine, and which are BS. LCA was once a place where people loved to work; where there was a sense of community; where we all worked for the same company with one purpose and goal in mind... that being the delivery of ACCURATE and TIMELY test results. Employee input was encouraged; ideas were welcome; discussions were held and the company generally looked out for the employee. Sadly, that LCA is no more, extinct like the dinosaurs. Corporate greed and dictatorial policies rule the day. Unfortunately, there are no brighter days on the horizon, unless, of course, you manage to escape and find a job elsewhere. So, there it is then. Good luck!

You hit the nail on the head! I could not have explained that better myself!

Why don't you ask one when you meet one!!!!

How can you meet one, they are an urban legion since sales reps never see or get contact from them. Well at least one of them! The one that never brings in any business but tells everyone how much business she has brought in. The one that reps do their own deals without her since they do not want to have her involved in fear of loosing the deal because of incompetence.

I happen to be one. And I'd sell circles around you any day of the week!!!!

There were also "some very hard workers" that were let go on the USL side too. So please quite your moaning. And why are we so gullible? Everyone knows that there is no "guarantee" on life's journey....... It's called employment at will.. Look it up.

It's called business 101. Quit being so thin skinned and naive. Continental and United Airlines merged recently. With corporate being consolidated in United's legacy locale in Chicago it was announced last week that 500 folks will lose their jobs at the legacy Continental HQ in Houston. FIVE HUNDRED FOLKS IN ONE WAVE OF THE WAND. Companies that merge have duplicity. They merge for economies of scale. Excess needs to be trimmed to manage expenses. There are countless scenarios like USL/Genzyme and Continental/United. Look at big PHARMA over the years with mass layoffs. There is no loyalty either way by employee or corporate entity. It's become our part of our culture here in America. DEAL WITH IT!!!!

Why shouldn't sales reps close there own deals since they are being paid on business they close in their territory? You sound as if you're an "entitlement" child. You want someone else to close business for you and then sit back and collect commissions. That's not the real world sweety pie!

Genzyme Reps are Lucky to Be Here

And to just set the record straight it seems that more Genzyme folks were maintained than USL folks. So QUIT bitching!! I understand the logic though. LCA just spent over 900 million on the acquisition. The last thing they want is a mass exodus of business after that major purchase. Genzyme reps will be tasked to create that "business as usual" environment to maintain current clients. As a USL rep for many years all I did was take oncology office business away from Genzyme. I competed against IMPATH/Genzyme in the early days. Impath was a force to be reckoned with. Genzyme was very easy to compete against. So to all the Genzyme reps welcome. Just don't beat your chest with a holier than thou attitude as we establish this new team. And for all you naysayers that claim that the USL folks can't/don't sell we closed $26,000,000 (that's million) in new business last year. So get your records straight before you spout off and make fools out of yourself.
