Definition of Hostile Work Environment
Noun

  1. Unwelcome or offensive behavior in the workplace, which causes one or more employees to feel uncomfortable, scared, or intimidated in their place of employment.
What is a Hostile Work Environment
When an individual in the workplace feels scared, intimidated, or uncomfortable due to abuse or intimidation by a coworker, it creates what is called a hostile work environment. While any number of behaviors might create a hostile work environment, any conduct or actions that create an environment in which an employee dreads going to work is generally seen to create such a setting.

A hostile work environment is sometimes referred to as an “offensive work environment,” or an “abusive work environment.” The individual causing a hostile work environment may be an employee, a supervisor, an owner, or even and independent contractor. There are federal and state laws in place to protect employees from being subjected to workplace hostility.

You ALL are eating each other alive! So sad to read what Genentech culture has become. I worked there for two decades. Used to be “In the Business of Life”, now there seems to be a total lack of ANY human empathy from what I read....just hate speech being slung back and forth. Embarrassing to read!

The speaker today was speaking to white supremacy and those who perpetuate it. If you are a white person who doesn’t perpetuate it, then he wasn’t speaking about you and you don’t need to be offended. Not everything is about you. Or in this case, it is, and you have done your best to out yourself. Alternatively, you are offended because he called out those who refuse to accept the 2020 election. If you don’t think that, he wasn’t speaking about you. If that offended you, you once again outed yourself. I am shocked by the level of outrage.

I have been with Genentech for over 15years. I am a person of color married to a white person. What I saw last night was something I hope I never see at Genentech again. What were you thinking? Do you realize you can’t do shit like this? I am raising my children to be whatever they want to be, no barriers to success. They can become the next president, become a surgeon, a surgeon general, lawyer, or a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. This man was unacceptable and embarrassing to our race. Maybe next time invite Al Roker or Morgan Freeman. Q- think twice before you bring someone like that in again. He may look like me but he doesn’t think like me.

Every race, religion and creed has had "wrong" done to them in the past. That is not unique to the black community. In fact, there is still slavery today, there are still people being oppressed today, but no one seems to care about that. The history of this country is not perfect, nor is any, but there is a reason that people of ALL RACES AND RELIGIONS want to come to America. It is not because there is systemic racism. It is because they know what real racism and oppression is. They know there are always going to be ignorant people but that America has been the beacon of hope for so many.

I was not born in America and slavery is alive in my homeland. Thank you for this comment.

Serious question. What does not accepting the 2020 election have to do with diversity and inclusion?

You’re an embarrassment to your people.

I applaud you. Honestly, you are a pillar of your community and deserve much more of a floor than that racist, ignorant, clown we were forced to listen to yesterday. I really feel there are more and more fair balanced, level headed people of every race out there like you then the media or a certain party wants us to think. Your attitude and beliefs will do wonders for your children. Don’t ever let them, or folks on this thread, imply that you or your children are inferior and need handouts.

Not accepting the election is ignoring the fact that the black vote in GA, PA, etc is what put Biden over the top, not election fraud. Why do you think Trump wanted to stop counting when the predominantly black precincts were being counted? The turn out of black voters for Trump’s first election was very low compared to the most recent election.

Sorry Q I didn't vote for Clinton four years ago. It had nothing to do with race, white supremacy or trying to hold any class or person down. I didn't vote for her because I didn't trust her and her circle, period. Nothing more egregious then that. Now with Biden I was concerned with his ability to deal with China and what I see in him as early onset dementia. Sadly, I don't think he has the mental capacity to be president and don't think he can make it more then a year or two. Period nothing to do with race. I hope I am wrong and he actually understands what he is furiously signing into law, "just sign here Joe". He is in and now I support him and want only the best for everyone in this country and want my family to be safe. I am not shouting and throwing a tantrum saying "he is not my president." I am not joining some hatred march or burning down my town. Did you in the past? Where you okay with someone getting beat up because of a hat they wore? If you smiled or participated in any of this then you too are the problem. And to be CLEAR I thought the red head was an A$$ as well. But by all accounts I am called a racist now and truly feel worried my views will be seen as hostile by our new leadership. Yes I feel threatened. I agree with expanding our studies to under represented communities (and anything to help everyone) and love my black and white friends. Personally, I am here to serve my accounts and patients in need. We should stay in the lanes we know and seek guidance from experts. Not those who turn to hate speech, yes I know it is much deeper then this. Lets try to grow from our hurtful past. This can't be cured in one mans lifetime or a new now I have all the answers leadership position. If you see someone not being treated fairly- speak up. Get involved locally peacefully looking to help your neighbor. Hugs, friendships, caring for each other. Religion never hurts the sole either. Please no more gas on the fire and work to put the right people in your top positions. We are/were the number one biotech company in the world. This is starting to look like a circus.

Alexander needed to apologize today instead he looked like a deer in the headlights. Can someone please start a class action lawsuit. This speaker has transformed Genentech into a hostile work environment. As you can see from the comments anyone with any difference of opinion will be labeled a racist. Disenfranchise 50% or more of your workforce. Not a smart idea. You can forget about open discussions, now everyone is afraid to say anything.

Someone leaked the video to the news.

There will be a class action lawsuit forthcoming. I have spoken to over 20 people willing to sign on. I am embarrassed to work for this company. Don’t allow Alexander, Q, or others, to attempt to spin this as “starting a conversation”. What they have done is started what was an already fracturing culture, into a full on, divisive, bias culture towards anyone who looks or thinks differently. Shame on every one of you in Genentech Leadership. You should all resign today.

Oh, I’m sure the news will want to show this, kind of like the cities burning down all summer that we never got to see. No way, it paints the news and it’s followers in a bad light.

Missed it..what cities burned down? Why were young whites, blacks, Mexicans, Indians, Chinese etc all in lockstep marching this summer? Kinda seems like they actually hang out together and see hypocrisy in the “Blue” Law and order exposed in the Capitol

Good. Get comfortable what being uncomfortable. You people have been comfortable way too long. Silence means complicit. Hugs and religion can fix it...this is the epitome of White Privilege. Like Fannie Lou Hamer said, You can pray until you faint, but if you don’t get up and do something about it, he’s not gonna put it in your lap. Action. Get off the sidelines. Be Anti Racist. You know your people.

It’s official, the sf crazies are running the asylum.

You people? Exactly who is that? Can you be more divisive....I mean descriptive? Maybe divisive comments like this are the problem.

Go help patients & let’s all make this world a better place through our daily acts. It’s not hard.. it’s the little things we do everyday. Peace be with you & I mean that for everyone.
