Covidien

What's the deal with the Hernia Specialists? How does this differ from "soft tissue" reps, if at all? What are the benefits of working in this division? What are realistic 1st year total comp? Why the 90k base? This is high for Covidien. Serious replies only please.

Ok guys here is the truth. I've done both jobs as a Pharma Rep and a Med Device OR Rep:

Pharma at Plan= $150K working 30-40 hrs/week ($70/hr) with healthy expense account, ability to entertain, full corporate support and strong budget. Customers treat you fairly well and enjoy your presence over breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Downside is if you work more/harder you won't necessarily make more.

OR Device Rep at plan=$160k working 50-60hrs/wk ($47/hr) with no expense acount, no entertainment budget, no corporate support at all, no budget. Customers treat you like total crap even if you bring in food which rarely happens. Upside is you might, maybe do better to $190K if you get very very lucky and have a good year.

Sorry man but you guys have been fooled to think you have a better job just because you stand in an OR and shoot the sh*t with OR staff and a surgeon for hrs on end. You can keep your OR job. I'm going back to selling drugs making more per hour having a heck of a lot more fun doing it and getting treated better.

Please only those with experience on both side respond. I'm sick of hearing from the kool aid drinking med device jocks and r*****s that can't even read without using their finger say crap like, "pharma's for catering", "pharma's a monkey in a suit job". Look ya r***** who's the monkey standing in the corner of an OR tapping away on their blackberry hoping the surgeon pulls a endo gia over an echelon just to make $25.00!

From a leading pharma recruiter.

Dude Pharma is overloaded with people right now, why would a recruiter be posting on this board? To get high quality people? Wrong! You jackass!

And what is your position aside from a quip about being a recruiter?! Nothing. Cause you are brainwashed and probably sold paper before coming here and can't do anything else you moron! And you're happy with your $100K a year 80+hr a week job cause you know nothing else. Ya sleaze ball!

WOW! So true!! Med Device companies don't appreciate the dollars you bring in. 16 hour days, OR Staff - no appreciation, and absolutely no budgetary support from corporate. You are on your on - without the benefit of a reach around.

well, I work for covidien, and absolutely love it! No complaints here! It's amazing to me that all these replies are probably from former copier sales reps making $30k/yr., and all they do is complain about how much $ they think they deserve or don't get. It's sad.......

COVIDIEN announced plans today to charge reps 80.00 per month for personal use of the company vehicle to help offset gas! They are slowly taking away the last good benefit they have. I am sure they will make the reps cover larger portions of health care too! The nuc imaging reps had their quotas raised 4x during the year. The last quota increase was just before the end of the fiscal year.

This company is a joke!

Hey dumb ass....Almost every single company that supplies company cars does this. This is nothing new. Wow $80 a month and you can drive the car from LA to NY and not pay a penny for gas. What is so bad about that?

And by the way, Nuc imaging is in the shitter at this point.

Does anyone know if Covidien's Hernia Mesh Dept, has a position in Austin, TX available or becoming available anytime soon? Do they even have a rep in Austin? Thanks for any info!

Have done worked for covidien and pharma. Hands down, specialty pharma blows covidien away. Benefits alone make the switch worth it, not to mention the QOL. Device is way over blown. Had to try it though.

Medical devices is more glamerous that's for sure. I have worked both ends. The problem here is that Covidien is not that great when it comes to running the business. Scott Flora has no fucking clue as to what is going on, only what is going on above him. He is missing out on making this a great company. I would not recommend this Covidien but I do recommend medical devices. Pharma will soon be all contract reps. Drug does well they might hire you full time, otherwise easier to hire and fire and no need to provide full benefits. Pharma use to be a great job, it no longer is as I dont know one person that still loves what they do in pharma.

any info on vascular access manager position would be greatly appreciated. I'm an o.r. RN looking to get into medical sales. I'm Iv'ing with several companies who're looking for clinical reps. I would love to get info on the best companies to work for. I was offered a position with ethicon but turned it down cause the manager seemed to really be an ass. Had this attitude that my only job is to babysit cases only and not do any selling. I've run into many reps that started out as scrub techs and RNs and are doing very well, especially for Spine, and ortho.

This guy is obviously HIGH or DRUNK. First off, less than 5% of pharma REPS are making $150K. Secondly, I know several pharma reps and NONE OF THEM ARE RESPECTED BY THE MEDICAL INDUSTRY including there own customers. And yes, two of them are oncology representatives (specialized). Lastly, you are a caterer no matter how you look at it and the staff is always bitching at you because you bought coke not diet coke.

Medical device gigs are so broad that you can't classify them fairly. For example, Trauma, spine ortho gigs usually pay $200+ versus DME or bracing gigs that make $100K. Cardio/Vascular gigs are $200+ versus diagnostics gigs that make $120K. Not to mention every company is different on company cars, car allowances etc. Some reps are 1099 versus W-2.

I've listened to sooooo many people try to prove which industry is better, pharma or device. Bottom line is pharma is not paying like they used to. I know because I worked in it for 5 years. Yes, they have great benefits but slowly and slowly they are decreasing because more and more of their drugs are going generic and there is very little in the pipeline. Medical device is more complex in that there are several different types of sub-industries within device (ie: spine, ortho, trauma, dental, cardio/vascular, dme, diagnostics, etc.......). For the most part, device jobs are more lucrative than pharma. Device jobs are less micro-managed and more on your own jobs. BUT, unlike pharma, if you do not grow your territory, they will fire you in a second. Customers generally see device reps as resources and tend to become friends more than your customers. As far as benefits, again its a company specific situation.

Pharma is a complete piss up. Can't believe they actually call it sales.
