It is ironic I am reading this post this morning. I generally stay off this site, but my anxiety about losing my job got the best of me. My husband is an RSD in another biotech company and we were just discussing this very topic Friday evening. I received three texted screenshots from coworkers regarding some of the "winners" that self-promoted themselves on LinkedIn. People are disgusted by this. I cannot begin to tell you that these self-promoters are the very reason the pharmaceutical industry is in the gutter. It literally sickens us to see individual take screenshots of themselves and then post themselves on the worldwide web, ironically using words like humbled. In reality humility is completely void and nonexistent in these narcissistic people. These are the same individuals that generally won't shut up on team calls, constantly trying to make themselves look good. The only motivation is to make themselves look talented even at the expense of being liked. In the end, these posts are on the worldwide web forever and make these individuals look very bad. It may be beneficial for people who plan to engage in self-promotion to try to realize that others may actually be less happy than they think to hear about their latest achievement. For what it is worth, the screenshots that got texted to me clearly went out to many other employees. It is obvious these people are not very well liked or respected.
Yes, these people are disgusting, BUT this is how you survive in this industry, and most others too. Those that are proficient at shameless promoting themselves survive more often than not. They don’t care if they are liked by their peers or not. As you know, most in lower management are very gullible, not very intelligent, and easily manipulated. These people have become masters at this.
Like them or not, they are more likely to survive than you. This world has become dog eat dog more than it ever has. Enjoy “pharmaceutical sales” (sales, what a joke!) while you can, because in a very few years, AI will end the need for any reps promoting drugs to physicians. You will go the way of the buggy whip salesman. Mark my words.
