Bad Managers at Ortho McNeil

Phillip "Sweet P" Ashley...by far the worst manager I've ever had, and I've had a bunch with all the "course corrections" this company has had. Seriously, a lawsuit waiting to happen. A real dirt-bag self-absorbed loser. Very active in his church on the weekends, very active with his female reps too, if you know what I mean.

As I read this I just shook my head and laughed. So pathetic yet soooooooooo not hard to believe. Seems like taht is the way it is here. He must have got lessons from that "family man" KB......................... what a joke and a fruad KB is.

Yep, he's bad alright! So arrogant, just a jerk, plain and simple. Must be something in the water down in SC. KF on AI/GI calls SC home but crosses state lines. Too bad he can't just stay in SC. Perhaps he and PA could work together. Would love to see that "battle of the wits".

Heard DK-old DM for Long Island/Queens/NYC finally got demoted to a rep from a DM. It's amazing the company took so long to see that DK brought no value to any territory he managed. Fit the description of typical manager as stated in the numerous blogs that preceded this one.

Who the heck is DK from Long Island/Queens? NYC. Must be someone from a different area because nobody with those initials was ever a DM on Long Island.

An example of ignorance OMJPI DMs

A group of DM are given an assignment to measure the
height of a flagpole. So they go out to the flagpole with
ladders and tape measures, and they're falling off the ladders
and dropping the tape measures. The whole thing is just a mess.

An engineer comes along and sees what they're trying to do,
walks over, pulls the flagpole out of the ground, lays it flat,
measures it from end to end, gives the measurement to one of
the DMs and walks away.

After the engineer has gone, one DM turns to another and
laughs: "Isn't that just like an engineer? We're looking for
the height and he gives us the length!"

So true. Only criteria for being a OMN DM is to be 100% self-oriented.
Otherwise, brains are not part of the deal.

Why Some Pharmaceutical Sales Managers Hate to Manage Professional Representatives?

As we have discussed professional representatives may not be as focused on sales numbers and are less responsive to incentive pay than the traditional sales representative. This alone can make it frustrating for a traditional sales manager. But professional representatives are self motivated and driven by personal performance excellence. They strive to be the best that they can be and never seem satisfied with the level of skill or expertise they attain. This includes selling skills, persuasive techniques, and managing their territories. So why do so many pharmaceutical sales managers hate managing these people?

Because it takes experience and a much higher level of coaching skills and management expertise to leverage the value and satisfy the performance expectations of a professional representative.

You may have heard the term “high maintenance rep.” Well, they can exist on both ends of the performance spectrum but it is probably used most often to describe professional representatives. The reason is that professional representatives will push sales managers, sales training, and marketing to their limits of technical and scientific competence, coaching skills expertise, and management capabilities. When the skills and expertise of the professional representative exceed the management competence of the sales manager, it becomes personally threatening to the manager and makes their job much more difficult and sometimes even impossible.

Professional representatives are so good at what they do and they have such an instinctive sense for what is going on in their market that they are often the ones that ‘complain” about the crappy marketing materials and boring marketing messages they are being asked to use. When they point out that they really don’t have the data to support the claims or the efficacy implications of the marketing materials they get labeled as trouble makers. Professional representatives also expect insightful post call coaching for improvement not just critique of what they did wrong. And, despite being less driven by numbers, when they point out that their sales forecast makes no sense as it applies to their territory, professional representatives are frustrated by the lack of rationale for their increase, especially in the context of other conspicuously low territory growth rates.

Experienced, skilled sales managers with expertise treasure and nurture professional representatives. They lean on them for help. They tap their technical and scientific expertise for the benefit of the district or region. Experienced and skilled sales managers know how to inspire and help professional representatives achieve their seemingly impossible expectations for excellence. They have the exceptional coaching skills necessary to identify the nuances of interpersonal and presentation skills that can make the difference between an impactful discussion and merely delivering another marketing message. It takes a confident (not arrogant) manager to hear what is really being said in the “complaints” of the professional representative. You have to be a much better, more experienced sales manager to appreciate and effectively manage a highly skilled professional representative.

If you lack experience, sales management skills, coaching expertise, and technical competence, you will hate managing a professional representative.

apparently its ok to go below the line-so here i go. i dislike my manager so much. he is so rude and constantly demeans women. he treats me like im a child and basicially treats me like shit even though im doing better than over 1/2 the people in my district. he acts like a mans man with the other guys on the team and really just acts like an ass. hes rude to me, other customers and has no sense of management. actually he does, he manages by fear! i wish i could get the hell out of this company and i am trying like hell....good luck to all of you out there

You must be talking about a manager in PA

Yea I am! And he is getting worse by the day. He loves to make up stories to cover his ass! It's crazy how he is manipulating this company. It's so funny but his previous reps have leaked a few good stories from his past few years-it's amazing what he does and gets away with

Go get in a hot tub time machine and go back to the 1990's in one giant SE city. Horrific mgt....lots of lawsuits, HR nightmares ect. My mgr would cancel at the drop of hat and keep me waiting in the hotel lobby all day (pre cell phones) only to cancel after 5hrs of waiting (not kidding ) due to a sick cat/ could not find car keys/ no steering wheel fluid/ wife parked in front of garage and could not find her as she was out for a run (with the car keys I guess?) and on and on...

Are we talking about Matt Hanvy?

(WM) was my manager as well. Not a bad guy..never had a problem working with him. He is just a spineless jelly fish that is only out for himself. All his reps think the same thing and nobody trusts him. He is amiable enough and will always be nice when you work with him. FCR's won't be really bad either. Just don't trust him.

Oh I worked for that clown Masi as well. It's so good to be away from him. Very poor management skills. He is definitely not one that leads by example. It's just a matter of time before his days are numbered. I heard his district is doing very well. Trust me Will, it's nothing that you're doing. Once January 2011 rolls around and the comp plan changes...you'll drop 100 spots in a matter of a month. That being said...the numbers is all a bunch of bogus horse shit. Learn how to manage your insecurities....learn how to manage your "people skills",
learn how to handle "conflict resolution"....SHIT..I think you just need to go through MDP all over again. Personally, I think you'd look better in a skirt. I have to agree with that other poster. You are a spineless jellyfish Will and your entire team knows it.
Your entire team reads these message boards. Just think the next time that you are out riding with them that they read all of this and feel the same way about you. You should be ashamed of yourself. At least we all get a good laugh about you after the "work session".
