Yes. It is. Despite Bill K stating in the management review 6 months ago that they weren't shutting the plant down. The letter made it plain that this is round one of the lauyoffs.
 



This is sad for all my old co-workers that made it through all the wrongful terminations and have given all they can to their job. Did you even get the choice to move to SC or are they starting from scratch? I didn't even think they could manufacture from there yet. What a joke.

Orlando-based company that manufactures inhalers and other pharmaceutical devices has announced that it will lay off about 180 people at its headquarters location.

The cuts come as Nephron Pharmaceuticals grows at a new facility in Columbia, South Carolina, where it has been hiring up to 700 people. At one point, Nephron had also planned to expand in Orlando but those plans ended with the South Carolina construction.

Nephron, 4121 Southwest 34th St., filed notice with the state of Florida on Oct. 27 that 400 workers could be affected by layoffs -- but Lou Kennedy, owner of the company said she is anticipated about 180 job cuts.

"Our headquarters will remain here in Orlando," Kennedy said. "There will be no interruption in supply. Three of our 13 production lines will be moving to South Carolina."

"The state of South Carolina is a business paradise, because it is a pro-business state and has a good tax climate among other things," Kennedy said. "The local schools there come knocking on your door to find out what kind of graduates you want."

Nephron has bragged that its Orlando facility is a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant, specializing in blow-fill-seal (BFS) manufacturing, a technology that allows a vial of medication to be formed, filled and sealed in a continuous process without human intervention in a sterile, enclosed area.

The company has planned to grow in respiratory, ophthalmic and injectable medications. The company sells into Puerto Rico, South America, the Middle East, and Europe.

Despite a state notice saying 400 Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corp. workers in Orlando are facing layoffs, the firm's CEO says it won't affect that many.
"We gave layoff notices to 180 people," Lou Kennedy, CEO of Nephron, told Orlando Business Journal .

This is still a significant chunk of Nephron's Orlando workforce at its 250,000-square-foot manufacturing, distribution and packaging center at 4121 S.W. 34th St. in Orlando. Kennedy said almost 400 people work at the facility that manufactures generic respiratory medications.

She also told OBJ that the company is keeping its headquarters in Orlando, despite opening a new manufacturing facility in Columbia, S.C. The firm chose Columbia as the site for its new $313 million facility in October 2011, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted approval on Oct. 16 for the firm to begin operating there. However, Kennedy said there are no plans to consolidate the business solely in Columbia.
In an employee layoff notification obtained by OBJ, it says Nephron is "downsizing its Orlando manufacturing facility and transferring a majority of its production operations to its facility in West Columbia, S.C. Nephron ... anticipates that a majority of its workforce at the Orlando manufacturing facility will be laid off."
Kennedy also said the Orlando space that will open due to these layoffs will be repurposed for storage and to space out the remaining manufacturing, distribution and packaging lines.
Local layoffs can increase the unemployment rate of Central Florida, ultimately hurting the bottom line of the economy. The downsizing of medical manufacturing companies also can hurt the appeal of Central Florida for other related companies looking to come to the region.

I agree. Believe me, in the long run for all of you this is a very very good thing. The human mind is very adept at adjusting to the environment and blocking out bad things while you are in a situation (i'm sure there is a psychological term for it...), but let me assure you, once you are out for a while you will look back and realize....it was actually orders of magnitude worse than you felt it was when you were in the thick of the insanity. There are many good people at the Orlando plant, good luck finding new gigs. Some of you have chosen to continue to try to draw blood from the stone and move up to SC, others of the monarchs favorites will undoubtedly congeal together like moths drawn to a flame at the Orlando HQ building, for the time being. Good for you guys, some of you are really smart and sneaky, and know how to milk that lunatic for all you can, have at it!
 



I'll never understand why people pity Bill. He's at least a culpable as Lou for this mess. Lou certainly goes home to this company's majority shareholder to get his opinion on what to do. I'm no fan of Lou, but some of this hatred of Lou and not Bill is sexism. Plain and simple.

Agreed, Bill is culpable for sure. His decisions lead to this, and he is certainly not a kind gentle soul... From a certain perspective, Lou is certainly being looked at more harshly than Bill due to the societal (both Male and Female) bent to value agressiveness in men and devalue it in women. The ever-present spectre of sexism, however, should not be used to justify that sad woman's behaviour. You can't behave like a lunatic, treat people like dogs, ruin lives and destroy companies and then blame it on sexism and get a pass.
 









Lou Kennedy is a liar. I prefer to believe a state notice that she filed that what she says to the press. It will not be 180 that go. It will be 400. Thoes that are still there. God be with you. Remember, its not about what you walk away from. Its about what you walk away with.
 



Of course Lou lied to the news! If you believe otherwise, look at your paycheck and ask yourself two questions.

1. Am I an average Nephron employee?
2. Is this the paycheck of a $70000 a year job?
 









This place is going down, find a position somewhere else before its too late. These management lying sons of bitches fooled us everyone. Get out sooner while there is time or they will kick your sorry ass booty out. Stop working for these Devils.
