Working at Shire

Dickwad. Some people really suck.

It's reality. Embrace it. Your employer hired you and pays you to do a job. Do it and you get paid, don't, and you will be gone. Corporate America is not your daddy. You have to earn your keep. You are entitled to nothing. As soon as idiots like you understand real life, the better off you will be and we can all move on and forget about the free lunch. Obama be gone soon and with him the distribution of wealth bullshit and the entitlement crap will end.
It's time everyone takes responsibility for themselves and not rely on charity.

So when will Kathy & Perry understand real pharma and not some recycled bullshit from the 1990's? If they even took a minute to understand our customers or the market instead of ramming an old model down everyone throats, they may actually get an ounce of respect. Totally clueless (and classless) leadership.

Looks like people at Shire make a lot of assumptions especially this poster. Definitely not a place I would want to work.

Exactly! Like using an old Big Pharma model of "overlay" reps. The industry is trying to get away from it and they initiate it. Not to mention that these overlay reps have a cake job-core reps have a big percentage of doctors in C's that are solely theirs while overlays have very few, if any C's that are theirs-yet, they get paid on all the C's that the core reps call on. Where is their accountability? How in the world do they think that is motivating to the core reps? I've never seen reps in this company so deflated.....so sad and such an unfair model.

Its harder to call on A and B doctors who have been called on and beaten to death with the same message. To grow them is not easy. I am a core rep and I am relieved I that I can spend most of my time cultivating and spending the most time with my C targets. Many of who have not had a consistent message. Both my core rep and I are paid on total dirt and I find that refreshing. If you have a good overlay rep than this can only be a win/win situation. If it's not, I would look to yourself to find out why its not working.

But wait. Didn't KK say at summer POA that a C target isn't worth the time?

I'm confused you're a core rep yet you say "both my core rep and I are paid on total dirt" - sounds like you're an overlay trying to justify why we need you. I've been here awhile and have been very successful in my own territory. I will figure out how to make this work because I have no choice but spin it how you want-it's unnecessary for many reasons. If you are ok doing all the work while your overlay gets paid then you need to self-check. Customers don't like this model. It's unnecessary to call on any doctor 9 times in a quarter. There is not enough volume in most of these C targets no matter how much frequency you put on them the bulk of your success will come from A's and B's. I might feel a little better if the overlay reps had a lot of C's that they were calling on which I was getting paid on. Core reps are still calling on A's/B's - overlay reps have a cake job. It's not their fault but shows the "business acumen" of our leadership. I know exactly why it's not working. The POD/team approach is dying.....

Never... All of pharma is stuck in the same abyss. Some try to put a new dress on the old whore, but it doesn't work and will never work.

I am a core rep not an overlay it was a mistake in the post. You do have some valid points, but as everything stands right now I am glad to have the freedom to develop new targets as long as I am getting paid to do so. If they were to move to targets and not dirt then your point would be more valid. If that were to change then I may agree with you. You do realize that with you both being paid on dirt you can both call on C targets right? Or you could choose to not call on your C's. Its up to you. Last I checked both Core and overlay reps were comped the same and had the same goals. If the goals were different, I could see your point but the goals are the same and so is the bonus. Why wouldn't you work together? I am not thrilled about having a overlay, but as long as the company is not penalizing me for it by adding additional goals then I won't complain. If that were to change then I would agree with you.

I am new with Shire and am a "overlay". I have always had a partner and think that you people are just big babies. Did you call on A/B and C targets before? Did you have the same bonus dollars and rewards before? Did your territory or goals change?? Then what are you complaining about? You are making the same amount of calls on the same targets. You are not asked to share your bonus. Get over yourself.

Wow! You can copy and paste!! Impressive.....

Let me tell you about Shire:

I left Shire in 2012 and was the worst decision I ever made. My ADHD sales role allowed me freedom, a free car, gas, insurance, the best 401k match in the world, and the ESPP (which I made enough money off of to save $56,000 in 3 years while still living an incredible bachelor lifestyle). I bought a house with 20% down on 1 income!

Yes, the leadership changed, there were sales presentation changes, etc...

But the meetings, the team events, the national meetings were all first class and had unbelievably open budgets.

I had dozens of friends criticize me for being in pharmaceutical sales, but looking at it now, they were way more stressed and did not amass nearly as much money in their savings or 401k as I have from Shire.

I quit on account of leaving for greener pastures...and now 3 years later and 3 companies later, I wake up every day thinking about Shire.

Yes, call me an idiot, because I was.

One caveat. This is not the Shire you left. Everything changed when FO and PS walked in the door in 2013 and it has been a systematic change in everything. The bene's you speak of will change. They missed the opportunity because of the Abbvie deal, so late in the year they were forced to leave it as is for the new year.

I agree with you but don't even look back because the Shire you miss is long gone! Anyone who has been here for more than 3 years will tell you this.

If you work for Shire:

Max out the ESPP and 401k.

Without tedious research, I don't know of a company that has ESPP and 2:1 match on 401k contributions.

There's people with only 10 years at Shire who have $500,000 in combined stock/401k and they are regular reps, not RD's.

I've seen it. If you put $12,000 in ESPP in 2009 you'd have $72,000 now. That's just one year.

No, that's 6 yrars, moron. But your point is right, no one gives 2-1. You have to decide if ten years of misery is woth it.

I meant $12,000 of maximum espp contributions for 1 year. Obviously, you never maxed it out or you'd have known it was about $900 a month or $10,800 a year but the value was $12,400 because we got it 15% off.

Don't call me a moron. If you knew me, you'd probably think I'm a pretty cool guy.

So nothing good at all?

Then there is the stupid busy work. I have to write a novel for my ZD on who is a KOL he should have dinner with. What objectives I want him to achieve, why is this doc important. Really my RD and ZD can't figure this out. Then we have targets A,B & C... But KK only wants us to focus on the A's and B's. And this micro target list, many are dead, retired, moved or no see. And now we have to communicate with your overlay who is calling on your A's and B's. Oh did I mention the ride along itinerary you have to fill out for RD before you ride together. There is so much admin crap it's insane. KK is not very bright. PS is a slimy car salesmen.

This is why I have checked out. All of this admin stuff instead of selling is redonk. Maybe if my RD spent his office days actually working or less time in the field pretending to be busy (wasting our time) they could figure out the needed information on the KOL's. I just started logging TOT for all the BS admin, extra communication with overlay, itinerary, calendar, KOL notes, endless meetings, time spent sifting through the 100 emails, and every other busy work item they push down. I went from being in the field full days to half days. Time spent in front of customers is now spent behind a computer screen. Nice Job, KK and PS. You have turned my RD into a chicken running around with her head cut off just so she can look busy. We have lost reps and are on the verge of losing more great sales people. You sure know how to run a company...intro the ground. The amount of successful reps with updated linkdin profiles speaks volumes.
