WILL OFFICES EVEN LET US BACK IN IN MID MAY?

Former Genentech employee here. The original poster is correct. They absolutely gutted our field sales teams. The cuts across all therapeutic teams are around 70%. That should give you an idea of what's coming so plan accordingly. This was also done before COVID19 so it could get even worse. The rep role is history and will never go back to the way it was.

Thanks for weighing in and confirming. The people who disputed my original post are just angry, ignorant, and uninformed. Genentech got absolutely skewered. Know why? They got into contract scrape/argument with a major account (I'm not exactly sure where, I believe it was Texas) and the account barred all Genentech Reps from the system's hospitals, offices, etc. as a result. Know what happened? SALES WENT UP EVEN FASTER FOR THE NEXT SIX MONTHS. So Genentech took a closer look and did a pilot study on all of Sales. Guess what? They ended up concluding that REPS were largely unnecessary (at least in large numbers). Once Amgen (and other companies) figure that out using this unfortunate experience, they'll be next. HEY, ITS A VALUE BASED CARE WORLD now. If you don't bring value, you're not going to be part of it and most reps bring NO VALUE. Deal with it.

Genetech still has plenty of reps. So you are wrong there. They downsized when tecentriq failed in melanoma. Do your research before you spew your inaccurate opinions. So you think the move to eliminate reps in 10 years stems from whining on a blog? Yeah I’m sure many strategic and tactical moves are based on deep research on Cafe Pharma...do you even read your posts before you post them? You sound foolish and angry...not sure why, but nonetheless you are uniformed by facts. Sure anything is possible and personal promotion could look differently or be gone all together or it could be bigger than ever in 10 years. You don’t know. I don’t know. So speculating is pointless and clearly it is you just trying to be a mean agitator. Guess that gets you off for some reason. Regardless keep typing your nonsense and the smart people will keep calling you out.
is that egg on your face or.....

is that egg on your face or.....
Nope. Not at all. You and the other poster made no valid points and the rationale of why they downsized is not accurate. I was there. I was part of these decisions. It’s always funny to read the inaccurate speculations of people that we not even there at the time or ever there for that matter or they were in a rep role... it a lot of former DNA folks at Amgen...Furthermore it does not speak to the many bio/onc sales build-outs that have happened in the last 3-4 years and those who are happening now.

Why do we even need doctors ? Some simple programming and Alexa can prescribe medicine

Look at Genentech. They realized that they didn’t need Reps and got rid off half of them. Amgen is about to realize that too. Good for them. All you do is go on this blog and whine like a bunch of babies anyway. In 10 years or so, there won’t be Reps. You’ll have to find real jobs. And you’ll have your own pathetic selves to thank for it.

Haha SO MUCH YES. This x100

You Amgen oncology idiots have been banned in many accounts for years due to extremely unethical contracting practices. This will make it worse. Oh and by the way what’s with the crazy oncology turnover? Everyone i talk to there is miserable and says “do not come here”.

That's every division at Amgen. Amgen's motto is now "Do not come here".

Oh yes, it’s so awful here in oncology. $182k base, working from home without pressure to reach out to customers due to the COVID 19 crisis, bonus paid out at 100% until we are back in the field again, and one of the best 401k plans in the industry. Yep- it’s absolutely horrible here. Haha!

$182k...that’s a lot to you? You are on the low side for oncology base salaries.

They will not continue to pay everyone for long to sit home on cafepharma. Guarantee companies already looking at downsizing to save money and use COVID as excuse
Amgen has never needed an excuse to downsize since Bradway joined. When they want to do it, they just do it. After the first big layoff happened more than ten years ago, Amgen has been very comfortable doing layoffs ever since (some small, some larger). The 2015 layoff was 25% of the US workforce, but received little attention outside Amgen, because it was focused on the US, so the global percentage was more like 12%..

So tell me where are the companies paying all this money?

$180K is the starting point at most of the midsize start up onc biotechs today. $182 isn't bad, definitely not on the high end for oncology biotechs, more like a salary for those with less experience. I know for a fact that many of the new startups like Deciphera, Agios, Exelixis, Beigne, Stemline, and Karyopharm just to name a few are bringing tenured reps at $200+K base salaries. $15K at plan per quarter. Add to that options and RSU's with big upside potential and your $182 looks a bit paltry.
