Why are BI oncology reps paid more than the rest of the company?

In cardiology, I thought I was well paid with a salary in the mid 120's. This was until I found out that an oncology rep in the same geography as me is being paid a base salary of 158k. I have more years of industry experience? HR grades these positions equally. Does anyone else see this as a problem?

Don't worry you'll be getting laid off shortly.

Don't believe all that you here.

Oncology makes more than any specialty in every company. I have known many primary care reps who have moved into Oncology over the years and they are not any better than you, just lucky, or connected. Their salary makes no sense.

Well if we are graded equally, which we are, there should be no drastic difference in pay. Regardless of the division we are working, the pay should be commensurate.

I would encourage all who may be upset by this, to have a discussion with their manager and then to HR. I know my manager is upset that reps are making more than he is. Let's start rocking the boat here a little bit.

Fact: the top rep in Oncology grossed 246,000 in 2015. This is base and bonus combined.

why? $$$ ! Look in mirror, say this out loud with your family listening "the doctor says I have CANCER"... Now try out this line "the doctor says I have a cardiovascular disease" .
CANCER is the get out of jail free disease state for pharma,,,sure the pharmacy will tell you about the 5 dollar generic ARB but are they really going to mess with a CANCER Rx? That's why CANCER reps get paid more. Sell CANCER Make $$$ your heart will feel better.

It is a different kind of hustle. When your product costs let's say, $4000 per pill every capsule or vial every week is scrutinized. And you feel the pressure. You fight hard for every script - checking a box and saying "that's a call" does not happen. Many of these reps have HUGE territories and bend over backwards to make relationships and get access. It is A LOT of nights and weekends and not worth taking "MLK" or President's day off because you need to hit that goal. It is a lot more money. And if it's a life you want you should absolutely go for it. But it's different.

Don't kid yourself. I am in oncology and can barely see a doctor. The drug we sell is viewed as a "dog" in the industry. It's used primarily in the salvage setting for a subgroup of patients who have nothing else to turn to. I basically call on nurses who are reluctant to give up their time and do lunches where I can. We are overpaid and we know it. How we get paid so much more than you is a mystery to me. Sorry about that, but it's just the way it is. Hopefully you can find an opportunity in oncology, but my advice would be to get the job with a real company. The self-absorbed leadership here has the false impression that they are "players" in the industry. Far, far, from the truth.

NO way you made that kind of salary as a Card rep. Never

We have much more experience than the average PCP rep and deal with a much more complex disease state. While we may be at the higher end of the pay grade, we deserve it.

Consider that a Cancer drug is priced higher and generates more revenue vs other products. Onc reps are highest paid reps in the industry and the products they sell are generally the most expensive. This is the justification for paying them more. But remember that if you're making a decent base, enjoying some good bonuses throughout the year, have a decent product to sell, no complaints about your territory, have a decent relationship with your manager, and generally have no complaints about where you are in your career, then you have it good!:)

Has anyone been promoted into oncology from within BI? I have heard that they only hire from outside the company? Why can I not take a lateral move from cardio into Onc if I am considered the same pay grade?
