What to do next?

Come on who really works an 8 hr day. How many no see Drs. When was the last time you worked a full 8 hr on a Friday. Look at the dead weight managers like Erica P. Some peopole have never worked a full week. I have to agree that it will be tough to make the money with the hours that we put in.

By the way, to the OP, it isn't ideal, but better than buying a car right away........Inventiv has postings everywhere, and where they aren't posted, there are always managers looking to fill new contracts. The openings are often because people just like you, (and others trying to do right by their families) are looking for a job in the industry with a vehicle, benefits, and still the opportunity to network and keep interviewing, so they take a contract to fill the gap.......just a thought.......
oh, and to the old washed up antagonist who makes up for other shortcomings by splashing numbers on Cafe Pharma (bahahahaha) some people are just better at sales than others... therefore not having to work day and night to make numbers. I'm just sayin.....
Good luck

If you are 30+...medical device. If you are 40+...stay in pharma/biologics. Don't buy a car. Borrow one from a family member or friend for a few months. Chances are you will end up with an even better job than the one you had with Janssen. Then you will be stuck trying to sell a car in this damn Obamaeconomy. Everyone that I have ever known that has been displaced, ends up with a better opportunity. Trust me, as I speak from experience. Go on a lot of interviews, even with primary care positions...just to develop your interviewing skills. By the time you begin interviewing for the job you would love to have, the interviewing anxiety will be gone.

Also, I have a relative in med device and the hours are crazy. He does many inservices on evenings and weekends. Great money, but high stress level.

One last thought...if you hate the idea of possibly getting displaced ever again, get out of the pharma industry. Sorry, but it comes with the territory.

Best of Luck to you in your job search.

This person is not in the know. My husband has been selling devices for years and has easier hours than a pharma rep, believe me. Also, he has the respect of his clients unlike pharma. His doctors actually want to talk to him and look to him in the OR for what to do next. His base is $85,000 and a quarterly payout can be anywhere from $10,00 -$40,000. If you know where the business is thats where u focus your efforts. Btw, if he doesn't have a case or appt on any given day, he's home doing whatever. If your device requires emergency surgery than your going to be on call all the time. If your device is a for a chronic condition, the surgery is scheduled in advance. And....you don't always need to be there. Get a doc proficient in usage of your device and then you just maintain them and groom others. They do have budgets I don't know what company the OP's talking about, and yes there's pressure but welcome to real sales. It's called accountability not a word pharma knows.

Would love to make the jump, but the base salary is very low, and they have to sell to a monthly quota. What happands if you have a bad spell. Plus they have to put in the hours, my kids get on the bus at 8:00 and get off the bus at 3:30, and I am told they do not have a budget for lunches. I know you can make good money, but I need work and family considerations as well, good luck

She has no problem admitting this in writing, though anonymous. This is one reason for downsizing: upper management isn't THAT stupid, where is the ROI. Not to blame the victim, but this poster obviously 1. does not want to make any effort, let along EXTRA effort to do the job, 2. "bad spell?" it's your responsibility to SELL, then to make the extra effort the next month, 3. she is a lunch caterer, nothing else 4. PHARMA REPS USED TO BE CONSIDERED PROFESSIONALS(once you work for and gain respect and trust of your customers), that is gone forever.

The reps were no longer considered professionals when the companies flooded the market with Barbie and Ken clones with no scientific knowledge whatsoever.

Most physicians are way too busy seeing patients because they are trying to maintain their own incomes to spend enough time to speak with a representative at anytime other than lunch--that is if they even come to the lunch anymore.

Physicians are not interested in hearing about products they have been using for over five years. That is when it time to bring in the contract sales representatives to drop samples, literature, and do some Barbie and Ken fawning on the physicians who like that attention.

You really need professional sales representatives when you launch new drugs and/or have changes in indication. If you don't gain significant market share within a short period of time you probably never will. When you see a territory with a high market share and high volume you have a good rep and good managed care coverage. You don't let those reps go simply because they do not show the same percentage volume growth as small markets with low share. That doesn't make any sense.

If you can sell . . . go sell
don't let someone tell you to hide in a corner and let your future get away

get your resume out there, work to work
it will come back
and reps who can sell . . . will

I am going to open my own Ritas Franchise, and work for myself. I always worked my but off and now I will do it fo myself and my customers. Thanks CP friends! I am a top performer with Janssen, and in life. As always, stay positive and keep it real in 2010

I am going to work as a personel trainer at my gym. The money wont be as good but I will have a chance to take care of me. I will also have to put more hours in than the 25 per week that I did at Janssen. No more free lunches!

I am going to try to stay in pharm, but with all the down sizing, it will be tough unlike most reps I put in at least 30 hour weeks, and worked conventions when needed. I will mis the free car and the lunches. I wont mis role playing and kissing my DMs butt. I will do some landscaping intill I can find something else, or bartend on the weekends while I keep looking

Trying to break into a state or federal government job while the pensions are still sky high. Put in my 25 years and retire comfortably without a quota to meet every quarter.

I would like to teach. We all taught Drs about our products and they are tough students. So I know I can teach the kids. Anybody else thinking this direction to. Like many posts I know I will have to work 40 hours or more without the car and benies. Oh well, Denise could not get the co-promote with Shire.

Age.......58
401-k.......$1,865,769.00
Jnj pension......$6,588 per month to life
Jnj retiree health inscherence $166.00 per month
Severance..... 90 days then 2 weeks x 138 months $289,800
.......nothen but miller lite, cowboy steaks, slot machines, and Sasquatches.

More power to ya gramps. I don`t get why reps are hating on ya. You`ve earned your strips. Enjoy!!!!!!

The nimwit who said all the severence bogus bragging is obviously not in the know...the 2 weeks per year is capped. If you want to pretend you are that old then at least get the payout right. Looks like that hookup is going to be at a local bar since the supposed money won't be rolling as you made olio it would.

Just head to Sunovion like 2/3 of this damn company is doing. Janssen is in for a rude awakening (if it's even possible for them to pull their collective head of their ass) once they see the express lane of reps leaving to go there in the next few days/weeks.

I'm not saying it will be better there- it's a marginal drug at best. BUT, they have Steven Stahl shilling for them, they're spending money like mad to get this dog on formulary EVERYWHERE, and they have taken the approach that if Janssen did it, they won't.

Pretty sound.

Do you really think this new drug stands a chance against Invega and Sustenna when they are backed by JNJ? Why would anyone voluntarily switch from JNJ to Sunovion?

I still dont really know what will go down , but I know I have the support of my CP friends this season. As a top performer I thought that everything would always be good, and that cream rises to the top, but I no longer feel this way. Over and out! Stay positive and keep it real in 2010

To the OP:
Get ready for a lot of disappointment. Pharma taught a lot of bad habits and outsized expectations.

Don't worry about the clown claiming the huge 401k, the huge pension, etc. By the time the economy finishes contracting in a few years he too will discover the joys of a downsized lifestyle. Nothing sets up a person for crushing failure like great success. His decades of unearned rewards taught him that he's brilliant instead of just lucky. No doubt he's already flipping FL condos, ignoring the corpses that litter his path.

Also, if you plan to get into devices, note how J&J hires unmarried recent grads to go to its residential device sales training program in (i believe) OH. After several months of training each grad is ASSIGNED to a territory somewhere. Few pharma reps get into devices.

It never ceases to amaze me how people think they're going to get laid off and then land in a bucket of roses somewhere. The odds against this happening are enormous. This FACT is revealed by the backgrounds of those taking Quintiles contract jobs. Outstanding people from every top pharma company are desperate enough to take what amount to temp jobs.

Think about that.

How about the notion of taking the quintiles job for the paycheck until you find something else out there? No one said the contract job is a career. It's job for the time being, thats all. People do land and things all come back around again. It's the cycle of the economy.
