and you think Biff and Bambi from XYX Pharma, after a week in Vegas for "training" is the ones who will educate the physician?
Go drink some more Kool-aid son
I don't associate with "Biff and Bambi", and over the years I've pursued education outside the company-offered training. I'm also a patient for some of the products I've promoted, so I've seen healthcare from both sides of the exam room.
You keep distorting the discussion with a lot of preconceived notions about drug reps. Like any group of people, there are standouts and laggards. I've met brilliant physicians that I would trust with my loved ones lives, and some I wouldn't let treat my dog. The pharma companies that hire Ken & Barbie types have learned what a losing proposition that is, and it's cost them dearly.
One of my top doctors recently participated in a peer-to-peer conference. The participants discussed their experience with treatment regimens for a particular disease state. One attendee did not know all the medication options, had a poor grasp of AEs and drug interactions, and completely messed up dosing. He was the one doctor of the group who refused to see reps. Ever.
According to the AMA, adverse drug reactions account for more than 2 million deaths, hospitalizations, or serious injuries every year in the US. How much of that is the result of an overworked physician who doesn't have the time to read, and reread, the Package Insert of every product they RX to check safety data and updates? Yeah, there've been excesses in marketing by pharma companies, but there is still a need to support physicians and patients with the latest available information in order to treat and not harm.
