the axe is going to fall on ...

Company does not care about talent or how you perform really comes down to a number and compensation. We pay you too much money, you don't drink enough kool aid or kiss enough butt your gone. Don't care how good you are, how many awards you have won, if they want you out your out. There is life on the other side, may take awhile but if you are good you won't have any trouble finding another job in pharma or another industry. Be prepared look for another position while you still have a job, there is no loyalty, need to look out for yourself and your family.

Last post is correct. I was let go in December, and instead of sitting around
waiting for a check, I started applying for jobs the next day. I stayed patient
and positive, did research and tried to make the most of each phone interview.
I was hoping to make about 75% of what I made at Novartis(almost 20 years in
industry so high base). On the day my severence check came I signed with a
very large company in pharma for more money than I was making at Novartis.
They have treated me as a professional, and the calibre of people has been incred-
ible. If nothing else Novartis has reminded me about everything that is wrong
with big business, not just big pharma, and I thank them for that. If you are let
go, there are much better positions out there, so keep your chin up. If you can sell
Tekturna with a straight face, then you can sell yourself. Good luck!

If you're selling Tekturna with a straight face then you're part of the problem - you can't have it both ways. Nevertheless, all the best to you.

Was let go in Dec. also, been looking since. Can you share the company you joined? Or any pharma co's that pay a decent amount?

I was let go in December and have applied for a few pharma jobs, but have only had one company call me for an interview. The rest of them have acknowledged (by email) receiving my resume, and that is it! I had an interview for another job at Novartis, but they didn't have the decency to let me know (no emails, voicemails, etc.) that they had hired someone else. Most of the other companies have at least done that!

I am now pretty much looking outside the pharma industry. I'm not complaining, but I would advise those of you who still have jobs to get your resume ready, network with other reps, and be ready when they tell you that your time is up! I never had a bad rating or ranking, but wasn't immune to being put on the chopping block. The letter that went out (the week before Thanksgiving) about "the massive layoffs being a false rumor" proved to be pure fiction that lulled me into a false sense of security.

Don't let it happen to you!!!

There are lots of opportunities outside of Pharma, only the very naive or the lazy would continue to try to get another job in this buggy whip industry. If you can't see a job you want, create one!! I presented a plan to a large business, signed a contract the day my job with Novartis was done, and have already made 200% of what I made all last year. Of course, I was paid for a year with Novartis since I had been wth the corporation many years, but I also took full advantage of all the training and networking at my disposal while I was employed @ Novartis.

I signed with J&J, and they actually gave me exactly what I was making with Novartis. What impressed me about this offer was that I have been in the industry for almost 20 years, and my base was pretty high, and the manager that hired me went out of his way to match when he really could have low balled me. This is the kind of person that I want to work for, something that I didn't find in my time at Novartis. I wish you luck. J&J is currently expanding in the CV market, and the interviews start soon.

how old are you? i'm 55 no bites except contract at a 45% paycut.

You gotta believe oncology will be cut. Onc 1s and 2s are joined at the hip and work the position like a job share. Afinitor is still a small product and even with a big future doesn't need multiple sales reps promoting it. Most of the new indications for other products are in niche areas. Here's what makes sense to me:

Onc 1 Zometa and gone once it goes generic
Onc 2 gone
Onc 3 Afinitor and LAR
Onc 4 gone
Hem 1 Gleevec and Tasigna
Hem 2 gone
Hem 3 Exjade
One Hem ASM and one Onc ASM
One EVP per region

Reduce to 4 reps now and down to 3 within a couple years, and reduce to 2 ASMs and 1 EVP. Especially as sales reps move to hourly pay status, the numbers need to be reduced. Maybe they can scale up some jobs that still matter.

Congratulations on your brilliance! The rest of us who are obviously lazy and/or naive really appreciate your condescending sense of well-being! We're not worthy, we're not worthy!

June 30th. Gen Meds

In 8 years, no more pharma reps. With the jobs market like it is today, one can only assume that jobs will be harder to come by for another 2 years with the Looney Tunes of characters we have running the White House, ruining our country with their fascism and ideology, and literally destroying the best health care in the world today.
If I were in my 40's or 50's, I would seriously be looking at other job opportunities outside of pharma, because if you don't, you'll wake up at 48, 58 years old with no job prospects. And believe me, there is RAMPANT AGE DISCRIMINATION going on in the job market now.

June 30th. Gen Meds

WHen people came on last fall and started talking layoffs I believed it and info was accurate
This time i don't. Not saying that it won't happen in the future but June 30 i just don't buy
Novartis would not have another big layoff only 5 months after the last. It just costs them too much and too much disarray . You can see the business suffered because if what happend in December. I can see them waiting till end of year at minimum
Now Oncology may be a different story

If this person is so aware of June 30 for Gen med then lets have some details
Don't think we will see it

If Diovan erosion to Losartan is greater than anticipated and Gilynea uptake is less than expected actions will be swift. There are no "growth drivers" making up difference. They will make deep cuts. Remember in the end the Swiss will get theirs whether via sales or cuts.

Diovan sales is what steers this ship. Pretty soon, $6 billion in sales will literally vanish overnight and the deck chairs will be rearranged once again. All BIG PHARMA is spiraling down. It's like playing musical chairs, who will be left?
