TENURE - How did it work last time - How will it work this time?

Simple scenario - two reps in the same geography and Rep #1 promotes Reclast, Exelon Patch and has Diovan in the 3rd spot, Rep #2 has cardiovascular line products only. Both reps have had equivalent performance reviews for the past several years and neither has had a "1" for the past several years and neither expects a "1" on the 2011 review. Rep #1 has 4 years with Novartis and Rep #2 has 8 years. Rep #1 has been effective in the territory with the products that will continue to be promoted for the balance of 2012, Rep #2 will need to be trained on Reclast and Exelon Patch if retained. So based on this scenario, will Rep #2 win out based on seniority or will Rep #1 be retained based upon what that rep is already selling?

Historically this is how it rolls out in order of priority.
1. Last years rating
2. location to new territory
3. tenure

Example:
Anyone with a 1 is gone, sorry but thats what happens. If both have a 2/2, then its a matter of who lives close to the most targets in the new territory. If both live equally close to the majority of targets in the new territory, then the last thing considered is tenure and the individual that has been around longer stays. Just remember ratings are the most important and anyone with a 3 will stay unless the other has a 3 then the before mentioned scenario will play out.

What sucks is if you have been a top performer for years but as you know top performer goals increase, and then you have a bad year along with bad timing of a layoff, well you know the rest of the story.

Just continue to work hard, be a professional, and be as much of a value to Novartis as possible in meeting or exceeding expectations per your roles and responsibilities. Then also prioritize time when you are away from work to get your resume in order and line up interviews in preparation for potential layoff.

God Bless, and Best Wishes.

Thank you for this explanation. One question...when you said "last years rating", do you mean for 2010 or 2011?

They will include the last 2 years ratings - I know from personal experience.

As far as geography, you could lose out if you live in a suburb one more zip code farther away than your partners.

NPC looks at the "center" of your geographic territory, enter that zip code. They then enter the zip code you live in and your partner. Whatever map quest says, goes.

Doesn't seem fair but that is the truth.

I honestly dont think they take your product mix into account. Doesn't matter they can train you to spit out the company lines. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to promote either of these drugs.

I am in the boat of having consistently high ratings and last year i was moved to a territory selling different products(Diovan was one) that weren't performing. Not my fault but will probably get a 1 this year so i will be gone.
At this point, Im ready to get out this company will suck the life out of you and they don't even care.
I will land on my feet. I have at least 1 year of savings so in addition to the severance and unemployment, it will be nice to have a break of sorts and figure out what i really want to do

Don't forget Values and Behaviors = whether your are brown noser or sh*thead which is measured by depth of penetration. IF you are hung up on that DONT sign the severance. If you are on PIP at this time you are DONE and should seek legal advice immediately. DO NOT meet with anyone representing HR or Security without an attorney present. Have your attorney with you when your 2011 review is presented.

In our area, we had a large percentage of reps lost last time. All reps were rated nearly the same. The reps let go were mainly long term, highly compensated reps. We lost 2 president club winners from the last couple years, and a Cornerstone rep. We are now all 5 years or less--truly think cost to the company was all they looked at, certainly not performance. I have completed my MS in Healthcare management, and will be continuing to prepare for the eventual dissolution of the entire sales force.

This is the formula. End of story. (could be now last 2 years rating) but this is it.

Incorrect sir. With it all tied, before tenure, they count up how many 3s in v and b you have.

Was around for layoffs with Novartis and saw first hand layoffs at other big pharma co's. When the layoff is big, tenure takes on a lot of weight. All things being equal lowest tenure goes. Rarely are all things equal. Tenure does not count last in the decisions as has been listed in previous posts.

I saw high performing reps with awards etc. go before tenured reps. In many ways it's a crap shoot. They mix it up purposely to avoid any category being chosen over another which is why top performers can end up layed off.

with 2000 or 75% of reps being cut who cares. The number should be telling you that you will not be here. stop trying to figure out if you will make the cut and get your house in order. This is a fire sale "everything must go"

This is not 100% true. One of teammates had a "1" & was on a Performance Plan on the last down-sizing & did not get let go. I always throught this to be the process as well, but I've seen first hand a rep that didn't have a "1" got let go instead. So I guess the question is, is there a scenerio that can over-ride a rep with a "1" NOT getting released?

This post is correct. Who cares it is truly a fire sale. The layoffs in December proved that. At least when you go to that 1st interview you can honestly state it is not your fault and no one was protected from this high performers etc etc means nothing.

I agree also. With this big of a downsizing and change of the whole structure, do you really6 want to stay. It will be a whole different company and dont' think it will be any better .

Imagine going to your first national meeting and them telling the people left how lucky they are to be still with Novartis, what a great pipeline in store for them in the next few year.
Seems like i have heard this before. I just want everything to happen so i can get the hell out of here and relax!
