S3...blessing or curse?

Interviewed for S3 and got it. Had mixed feelings about the whole process but didn't think I should bow out. Was a Senior... Now an S3. Only got a 4% raise. Now I wish I would have bowed out. Does ANYONE really understand the role of an S3 anyway? Are there any other S3s second guessing their decision??? What was your bump?

I really wish I didnt take it- really just took it for the 5% bump- certainly not doing any extra work!

Your CTL will be on top of you. Don't think you will get away without doing the extra work expected of you. LOL funny that S3 only gets you a 5% bump. There was a time when a merit increase meant 7-8%, without the "extra work". Glad I have no part of being an S3.

For you, I dont know. For me, was just YouTubing some old tunes, listening to Boston, don't know why, but the lyrics hit me as truth.....I just want my peace of mind.

Now youre climbin to the top of the company ladder
Hope it doesnt take too long
Cantcha you see therell come a day when it wont matter
Come a day when youll be gone

I understand about indecision
But I dont care if I get behind
People livin in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind.

Blessing - nice title, more money. Good deal in such a toxic environment.
Curse - with that meager increase and a change in title, they will use them as leverage to have very high expectation of you. They will use it to justify why you are on PIP if it ever happen.

We all will be gone but for the really bad leaders and butt kissers...this song is for you:

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
[ From : http://www.elyrics.net/read/c/coldplay-lyrics/viva-la-vida-lyrics.html ]
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name......this is key---St. Peter won't call your name!!!
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world........WAS--key word!!!

What goes around....comes around.

You WILL be doing extra work or you will be out of a job. Big expectations on work load for s3, plus do you really think the people who were screwed and ended up as a s1 are going to volunteer to do anything but the basics for the job? By looking at the posts, it seems the s3s got an even bigger screw job than the rest of us if all you got was a 4% raise. You do have a bigger bonus potential, but if you don't plan on working yourself to death, then count on the people multiplier taking away about 30% of your bonus.

I figured I get asked to do a bunch of extra stuff anyway, so I might as well step up for any extra pay that comes my way. If you have the job and put forth some effort it should work out fine.

Yes at this point until Merck introduce a new metrics to measure your ability that is difficult to define and quantify. Then all your extra effort means nothing. If a manager wants you out, he/she can find some areas to piss on over and over until you cry uncle and leave no matter how much you are contributing.

The S3's will all be ranked together as a group, and will no longer be ranked against the S1 and S2 peons. Have fun scratching and clawing for rank with that group of Type A personalities....somebody will have to be at the bottom of that S3 pile! Will be fun for the S1 and S2's to watch!

This whole advancement thing is a total circle jerk. I cannot believe you haven't asked the question: To what end and of what value is the new title and SMALL percentage increase? I will tell you. The title means absolutely nothing unless you are a douche. The increase will probably put you in other income bracket and will have all sort of stupid expectations and busy work tied to it. Meaning, your home life will suffer and you will have even less free time and NO time to even look for a more meaningful job. So, if you're were making 87,000 now you are making say 91/92,000. Your bonus is harder to hit and if you make it mark my words, the system was engineered to SCREW you. I am going to hide within in my S1/Senior status forever and do as little as possible for as long as possible and put in my 7 to 8 hour day and go home, exericse and go for a nice dinner out. S3 is not given to you because they think you're management material. They are hoping you don't hit you number and you WILL be PIP'd. Personally, I think they gave the title to those douchebags that make too much money and bitch about their jobs and not have some "career" pathway. Now you can have your ass handed to you on your way out.

You spoke the truth. Now this person has to say goodbye to home life if any left.

When it comes to job security, low pay is always better, seniority is better as you'd be too expensive to severe; PIPs will be gone. My experience is your title means diddle to the outside firms that decide who stays and who goes. Companies always look to save money, save protected classes and payout as little as possible. Keep in the middle, hide, avoid PIPs and say "no" to big advancements. Duplicates will be cut and my guess is they will cut the higher paid employees or the ones with less time. It is a crapshoot but I do not think S3 is going to be a good move.

What do you folks think between S1 and S2 and that reasoning?

When I "interviewed" for the S3 position and found out how they are only ranking the S3's with each other, I backed out immediately. I became an S2 and got a 6% increase followed by a 1.5 % merit. Most S2's will make more bonus than S3's because of rankings. In order to make your projected bonus as an S3 you will have to be in the top 3 or 4 in the region...and that can be tough. In order to make above your projected bonus as an S2 you just need to finish in the top 15 to 20 people in the region (based on your region)...much more achievable and without the extra work.

Well said. There will be lots of scratching and clawing to get to the top of the S3 pile, especially among that group of people. I like what the previous poster said about family life. At the end of your life when you are on your death bed, it won't your S3 job or Merck manager who is there holding your hand. It will be your family. We all need to spend our time wisely with the people who matter most to us. For me, a mere 5,000 is not worth the extra work and nights away from family.

Lets just suppose that you are a candy company and you've become wealthy making fudge candy and all of the sudden chocolate becomes expensive so you do a focus group with a bunch of 'perverts' and decide that the country does not want fudge any more but peanut brittle! Now you have all of your salesfolks selling peanut brittle and pushing peanut brittle and telling everyone how great peanut brittle is and everyone in the company who likes peanut brittle gets promoted and those that really try hard to sell or cajole everyone into eating peanut brittle are rewarded even for the dumbest things that did not result in any peanut brittle being sold! You might be screwed! And still everyone else in the country except your perverts and those who you have perverted by promotion are still yearning for fudge and always will be! Want to bet that at some point in time a 'white knight' (not likely at Merck) will step in and point the famous fudge company back to her 'roots'! Sure would hate to have peanut brittle stuck in my teeth when someone finally comes to their senses!
If you can figure all of this out then you're smarter than I am!

I say blessing--similar to MGAMs a few of the chosen ones who will be here no matter what! 2 free days per week to "plan" and "execute" and get an S1 to do a poster presentation that you get to present at 2S, the only difficult thing will be how to rank you at the end of the year since the CTLs will only score you chosen people 5s

Most of this stuff has to do with things that don't matter in the long term! NCM will be a thing of the past in a year or so and we'll have another 'brilliant' sales scheme from those who brought you the last one. Good salesmen will always be needed if we're selling pharmaceuticals and right now the only real solutions are when the MGAM's go to take a piss! Nobody wants to buy our solutions when we can't even figure out how to be a pharmaceutical company..we have a new sales model ever couple of years based largely on which way the wind is blowing out of Washington DC not AC! How damn smart is that!

The problem is our key customers are utterly confused by Merck. Every two to three years we have yet another person with a title showing up to offer a partnering or a solution. My friend who is on a MCO P&T Committee probably has a dozen folders over the years from Merck "special visitors" touting solutions.
