Tim D is a sales rep at heart and would be the best at supporting his people and building outstanding culture. BSX really let a good one get away.

Chris H used to be a decent leader, but has become the ultimate "yes" man. He no longer believes and supports "people", but simply does whatever it takes to make the corporate big wigs happy. So much for integrity.

Seriously, Chris was never a decent leader. He is a good manager. There is a huge difference. Unfortunately, very few people in CRM understand the difference between leadership and management.

Chris can manage very well, but leadership is a tremendous void in his skill set.

It is actually interesting to see him entering his third year in his role. He rarely has been in a job long enough to actually have to live with the results of his decision making. I'm going to enjoy watching him in the new environment at BSC as his past decisions come home to roost.

Your comments are right on the money!

Tim was frustrated at the lack of leadership from MS and CH. Once VPs stopped making field visits with the troops on the ground and customers is when they lost touch (about 2-3 years ago). Mike S. has got to go. He is bringing down that area with weak leadership and poor decisions. We'll see if the new VPs will have the leadership to make a change to strengthen that area.

Don't hold your breath. History says they will not make the right decisions...we'll see.

Mike S. is a stuffed suit ...looks good on the outside (politically slick ..until he runs out of talking points) but very little substance underneath. As previous post indicated, they would be smart to bring TD back from Sorin or put someone like Mark K/Andy A in the position ..they run circles around MS's leadership. I believe MS was a rep for about a year and an RM for less than 2...then did a rotation as a marketing mgr in MN ...not the most robust background for an AVP position. You would think that senior management would raise an eyebrow with the excessive RM turnover he's had over the past few years...amazing.

Mike S. will be gone within the next 12 months if not sooner. The guy who he will now report to is very sharp... he will see through the facade and replace him with a strong leader.

I know someone who worked in house with Mike. Word is.. overall, he is a good guy. His rap is he's not a strong leader at all... he sits on the fence with decisions only to put himself in a strong political position if the chips fall on either side of the fence. He has survived by playing this way. Leadership is making tough decisions that make sense and may not always be popular. Mike is too much of a politician to stick his neck out..therefore he is percieved as a weak leader. I have heard that the managers who report to him in PA have a tough time with his poor leadership. It is evident to folks internally he has had a lot of turnover on his management team. I would gather he's on the short list to be moved out of the organization once the new regime gets their feet on the ground. The folks internally who have protected MS (RL, John R, etc) are gone or soon to be gone.

And when you say "Stuffed Suit" you mean 10 pounds of shit stuffed in a 5 pound suit, right? Right?

Seriously though, the last few opinions on MS hit it on the screws. He is not a leader in any sense of the word.

...on the money. When he was in marketing, people used to laugh at him in St. Paul with his 3 talking points. Once he is forced to talk outside of those points he gets flustered and his awkward rationale would cause many folks to wonder about his sense of judgement. Ever see him speak in front of people? Artificial and white as a ghost - like something out of a Saturday Night Live skit. He worries more about his image than focusing on being a leader. Not a motivating manager in the company & not someone you would trust to go into battle with. Weak at best. I can think of a few clinical reps who would do a better job than him in that AD role. Amazing that BSC pays this guy 350--400k to do absolutely nothing. As the previous post noted, time for a pitching change here to get the troops motivated.

A lot of folks were surprised Chris H has survived the changes. Many thought he would be gone. Perhaps his prior BSC experience was enough to keep him on board.
Here's how I would rate Chris...

Motivating leader: F
Analytical Skills: A+
Human skills: D
Mouthpiece for senior management: A+
Overall Leadership: D
Leads from the front: F
In touch with the market: C
Presentation skills: B

The ratings from a previous post (see below) are right on the money. It's worth noting that Matt O'Neal mentored both Bob B. and Nick S.. What a great sales organization we would have had in the East if O'Neal had gotten the Divisional VP job instead of Hartman.

Below are former & current AVPs and conventional wisdom on their leadership within BSC. I can see a change-up in AVP leadership once the 3 zone presidents are in place in the coming weeks.

1) Ryan W. (left BSC recently -now with SJM)
2) Jim L. [A]
3) Suzanne B. [C]
4) John K. (now with SJM)
5) Brian P. [?]
6) Mark B. (no longer with BSC)
7) Doug M. (now with BIO) [A+]
8) Carrie S.
9) Bob B. [A+]
10) Jeff K. [A]
11) Matt O. (no longer with BSC-started his own company) [A+]
12) Mike S. [C]
14) Scott O. [A]
15) Nick S [A]

I have been a BSCI CRM SR for almost four years and met Chris H for the first time in the Fall when he came into the field with my RM who he subsequently forced out of the company. My first (and lasting) impression is that he manages by spreadsheet, cares nothing for his people, and has no passion and understanding of the sales process.

I'm glad he will no longer be my VP as I would leave the company if he remained in the East.

Decent leader??? You have to be kidding. Everything CH has done and will do in the future is calculated to benefit CH. Other than getting Guidant in trouble with the OIG for paying kickbacks when he was in Marketing, can anyone relate anything he has accomplished in his career at BSC?
