Please leave ACell if your not happy

what is 'at plan'? what does that even mean? each rep has a different territory with different numbers of hospitals. even the customers themselves vary. some territories are heavier on wound care, some on hernias. some in areas with more obese and older and sicker folks, some not so much. the way i understood it was i'd get X% of sales made by me in my territory to the hospitals listed in my contract. pretty simple. i think that if you somehow believed that there was some magical number every one hits on some 'plan', you probably didn't read the contract very carefully.

Ohhhh the arrogance. This is typical double talk from the slimy used car salesman at the top. "You didn't read the contract carefully"??? Really? Wake up. We all talk. We all know you're full of it. The whole company is talking behind your back. Even a few of the reps making decent money (and there are not many of those) think you know who is an idiot. No one respects you. No one! Sweet culture you created here.

And the 2012 medical device D-bag of the year goes to......

The above post is so spot on. The most common conversation amongst reps and employees. "How did this clown get this position". "My manager is a fucking idiot, how did he get promoted". "When are we going to be a real company", and my favorite "this fucking distributor mentality is going to kill us".
We all wish that the man at the top would just be a "man" and admit he has made some mistakes. It's ok to make a mistake, but only a man can admit it.

By far, the worst place I've worked in my 12 years in medical devices. I've worked for start-ups and the big boys. I've had good years and I've had great years. I can honestly say that the past 11 months at ACell has been the worst experience of my life... And the arrogance of the guy running the salesforce makes me sick. He's slick snake oil salesman and everyone is laughing behind his back b/c they know his in over his head.

Shame on you ACell.

"worst experience of your life"? wow. i wish i had your life. or penchant for drama, at least.

If this is the "best experience of YOUR life", I am glad I don't have your life. You probably need to get a life if you think this is a good place to work.

actually, no. i would say getting married, having children, making money, etc. would fit into that 'best' category. i would say that this position is exactly what i wanted, what i proactively pursued, and thus far (knock on wood) i have been quite happy with what i got. its not a charity, its my job. i've never enjoyed working per se, but love that it gives me a feeling of self satisfaction, it helps patients, and i'm putting food on the table and a roof over my head as a result. i've been to some funerals that would qualify as 'worst'. good luck with your acting career.

There are lots more people that disagree with you. Keep piling on the powder, buddy. That's a great way to earn a living. I hope it's worth it. Good luck with explaining things to your kids and to others why you do it.

The vast majority of the salesforce hates working for Acell. After talking to numerous reps around the company, the General consensus is that the product is great. Unfortunately, The vast majority also believe that the people running the salesforce are unethical, arrogant, and phony.

The bottom line is this is NOT a good company to work for- At least not right now and not in the foreseeable future. Maybe one day they can get their act together and figure out the right way to run a medical device company, Because right now this distributorship mentality is not only hurting business but destroying the morale of the company.

I love working here! I love being lied to, I love having zero outpatient reimbursement, I love how Acell hires bartenders as reps, I love that corporate promotes off label use, I love having ZERO car allowance, I love having my lowest yearly income in 13 years, I love having a slimy cowboy running the salesforce.

ACell is awesome! Me and my colleagues love working here!

if you know the product is great, and you are selling that product to the benefit of patients, you should actually be quite happy with yourself. if you are concerned about money you should probably increase your performance since this is a strictly commission gig. or, the alternative would be to go to a company where you get a salary regardless of your performance.

A holiday poem

Once upon a time in a wrastling ring
I looked at my blackberry after I heard a ding
It was the slick red at last.
He was curious if leaving and how fast
Reps are sad and docs laugh at you
My good rep friend said to come to depuy
So I said no because of the "money"
Tr said don't leave cause that ain't funny
So I sell the "powdah" and my accts don't get paid
Due to my crappy income I no longer get laid
So my resolution is to find a new job
That way I won't turn into a slob
I love all you reps who I talk with
Lots of coin here is all but myth

I prefer limericks:

I once knew a man from Texas,
He had powdah and a bicep that flexes.
While dreaming of money,
His sales management was funny,
Now all of his sales reps are exes.

Forget the poetry. Let's put the complaining to the side for a moment and stick to the facts.

FACTS ABOUT ACELL

#1 Product is good, not great. Works well in many case types, but unproven in many situations. More studies are needed.

#2 The guy running the salesforce is in over his head. He has experience as a distributor in Texas. Distributorship models are not used in "real" medical device companies and Texas is verrrrrry different than the rest of the country when it comes Med Device Sales.

#3 Reimbursment is a joke. No outpatient reimbursment. The DRGs dont qualify the majority of the time.

#4 We have no clinical data. Surgeons are reluctant to experiment on humans, so no data to support claims means Surgeons are stearing clear.

#5 Six reps in the country are scheduled to make $150+ in 2012. 83 reps will make less than $85K. NO car allowance, NO cell phone reimbursement, NO stock options. Overall salesforce compensation is embarrasing.

#5 The lies and arrogance of the director of sales is consistent and nauseating . It's become clear to all of us that he's a double-talking, phony who blames everyone else. The truth is everyone is laughing at him and there is zero respect for anything that he says.

Sorry folks, but these are the facts!

you're off on the part about surgeons are steering clear. the growth in both the sales force and the sales numbers themselves prove otherwise. that growth is probably b/c the technology is the best among its competitors. having no clinical data does not equate to not being the best technology, it just means it has not been proven in a research environment, outside a real life clinical context (latter is what a lot of doctors rely on, once a product has FDA clearances).

unsure what you mean about the 'lies', 'real' medical device company, etc., and arrogance is a hard thing to quantify, let alone substantiate. having said that, the rest of the points sound pretty spot on. however, those points are nothing new, and have never been a secret.

merry x-mas!

Never was a distributor, worked for a distributor as a manager. The distributor he worked for was very successful and helped grow a large-ortho company. A small portion, MAYBE 10 percent, of this success was due to this sales managers line. Distributorships can work just fine (granted a direct sales force also works and is probably better for a product like acell's). It's not the model that is the issue, it's the people implementing the model. A well designed and implemented distributorship model could work at acell, so could a well implemented direct sales force model (and yes direct is probably better for these products but the other could at least be functional). The model of crazytown currently being implemented is clearly not working.

They want to call it a direct sales force but its really not. Do you get monthly auto allowance, mileage, exp reports? Do you have a solid salary with insurance or benefits? They propose it like a direct job but take all the advantages out to where it would be better for the reps if it was 1099 and pay them a greater percentage of sales. The attraction of direct is that they dont have to pay the higher sales commissions and that money can go into the corporation for overhead, research etc. Didnt they sell more when they were a 1099 sales force companred to today? They just dont payout commissions like they did and can hold a greater percentage. Its a 1099 product by todays environment when you look at the supporting data and resources. The W-2 formation makes it appear more valuable to take the stock public or sell. Acell reps, its not about you.

Worst company I've ever worked for....But I'm not leaving! I'm working 3 hours a week selling ACell and spending 45 hours a week selling for a real device company. I'm going to collect money from Acell b/c TR lied to us about the first year income and he doesn't take any responsibility. What an arrogant punk. Well, if he's going to pull his double-talking BS,blame reps, and mess with people's lives, then we're going to figure out a way to get even. Hey cowboy, you have a bitter and angry salesforce. Many of us are leaving and many are staying to get even.

Why did the old LifeCell reps leave ACell after 6 months? They had Surgeon relationships.... They knew the biologic market. If this is such a great product with such great upside, then why did these guys run from ACell after 6 months?

The product is good, but there are many good products out there, and ACell turns out to be more expensive because you have to apply it multiple times. PriMatrix just had a study where 58% of wounds were epithelialized at 12 weeks after ONE application, and these were wounds with a broad range of etiologies. Cost effectiveness is something ACell does not have, even with the DRG, because hospitals eat the bill and don't see the bump.
